Salladhor Saan deserves a special mention. Fans are always complaining if they change the race of a character, but this worked perfectly.. But there's a problem. Salladhor is supposed to be a blood thirsty pirate.. he doesn't really fit that role.

He's also charming enough to avoid the social media rape crusade:

There are not a whole lot for me.
I mean, sure, there are some additions to the story they have made that I'm quite fond of, for example, that one Cersei and Robert scene back in Season 1, which was so fucking good and gave much needed depth to these two characters. Also the scene in Season 3, where Cat talks to Robb's wife about Jon Snow. They were clearly trying to "redeem" Catelyn for being mean to Jon by giving her this speech and although I personally don't think this was something that needed to happen, I did like the scene a lot, especially because it gave Michelle Fairley something to work with. There are more examples for stuff like this, scenes that I like a lot which are not from the books. But the thing is, these are not really 'changes', I see them more as additions to the story and that's why I don't mind them at all. If they only fit the characters and don't feel superfluous or out of place, it's great stuff.
There are also a few characters that I think work better in the show than in the books, the best example for this would probably be Lady Olenna, who was a fun character in the books, but was taken to a whole new level of awesomeness by the incredible Diana Rigg. I would also count Tywin Lannister to the characters who were better on the show, but again, I don't think this is necessarily because of the writing, the credit goes to the actor. Through his presence and the way he talks and interacts with others, Charles Dance gives Tywin so much more depth than he ever had in the books, in my opinion, he makes Tywin feel real.
As for all the changes to the actual storylines though, no, there really isn't much I can think of that was done better on the show than in the books. With only one noticable exception: Tyrion's stuff in A Dance with Dragons. For me, these chapters were honestly the most tedious stuff Martin has ever written and I'm really glad the show has gotten rid of most of it. Jon Con is an awesome character, but the storyline itself was so freaking slow, and Tyrion's chapters were long and there were so many of them. So yeah, I think they made the right call by drastically cutting that particular storyline. As for Hardhome, well, it was a truly epic scene in every sense of the word. But because in the books, we haven't seen anything of a similar scope that involves The Others yet, I will withhold my judgement until the release of Winds of Winter.
As for all the remaining storylines that have been drastically changed this season, like you know, Brienne, (Stoneheart), Sansa, Cersei (to some extent), Dany (they killed off Barristan Selmy for fuck's sake) and Jaime (especially Jaime, because I freaking love his Riverlands stuff in AFfC - and also Show-Jaime has lost all his cynicism and arrogance) - it just doesn't really work for me and it is, in my opinion, inferior to what George has written. But that's just me, and I don't think any of these changes make for bad storylines or anything (except Dorne, Dorne on the show is pure garbage), I'm just not able to fully enjoy them. I think of what could have been and it makes me feel underwhelmed.

I liked the added scenes of Tywin and Olenna. They were funny and I loved seeing them play off each other.

Speeding up Dany and Tyrion's meeting is probably the big one for me.

Dany actually arriving in Westeros is so long overdue it's not even funny. I only started reading the books in 2011, I can't imagine waiting for her to finally come to Westeros since the 90s. It's time George!

Dany really needs to at least reach Westeros by the next book or I think we might get a fan revolt.

Haha. I don't care whether Dany comes to Westeros or not. As long as she doesn't sit the Throne or do "Big Damn Heroes" I am ok.

They both have a similar backstory to each other, orphaned and raised in the shadow of their sibling. While one grew timid the other grew bitter. They both have a strong stubborn streak, when they want something they go all in and dont pull back. They both have a devoted guy who backs their claim with undying loyalty to their claim and they both use magic to further push those claims. They are both viewed as saviors by their followers albeit both instigated by followers of R'hollor (and both, most likely incorrectly). They were both abandoned by the people they thought were their allies and forced to rebuild with people they intend to liberate. Their plan to liberate involves attacking people who are opressing those who rule these areas. Also they both belong to royal families. I believe she, just like everyone else who sought the Iron Throne, will die in their attempt to claim it. Either she burns Kings Landing, or destroys the Iron Throne. She will never sit it IMO.

And that wars never the answer, war feeds violence, violence feeds hate... so on. Remember, the story was written by a guy who actively opposed war. He tends to tale a neutural standpoint, but in characters like The Reader, Davos and Doran, his true opinions seem to shine through. Id be so happy to learn he was alive. I wouldnt be suprised either way since theres really only two ways it can play out. One point I saw raised about showing Stannis' death as 'gratuitous' is that they showed Shireen getting burned alive in agonising, shuddering detail yet they won't even show blood spattering on the snow when Stannis gets killed? Its either a sloppy death scene or an open slate for Stannis to return.

I'm digging up this thread because I'm starting my AGOT re-read and I'm glad they left out the part about Tyrion doing a fucking back flip when he first met Jon Snow during the feast.
