For me the best is cutting out Aegon and Griff. I really disliked him appearing in the books. I never found it a "what the fuck!" moment, more a "why the fuck?". What was the point of Dany's arcs in the first 3 books if she's not even the Targaeryan heir? Why introduce him that late in the game? Just my opinion though. I know he does have fans.

I think I stopped reading those threads after a while. Rethinking Sansa: From Pawn to Player 781 didn't quite live up to Rethinking Sansa: From Pawn to Player 780.

I don't really feel invested in Aegon so far, but I'm willing to wait and see how his story progresses in the next books before deciding whether I mind his being cut. I suspect, and I may be wrong of course, that his purpose is twofold. First, he needs to clear away some of the other Claimants in Westeros before Dany arrives. For example Euron/the Ironborn, and at the very least he will need to weaken the Tyrells/Lannisters. His second purpose is to be Dany's adversary when she arrives in Westeros. He will be the people's champion after defeating the oh so hated Ironborn and Lannisters. Then along comes the Dragon Queen, and Aegon decides hey,mI quite like this power by myself thanks very much, so sod off now. That makes for an interesting story, imo (I'm talking broadly here, obviously I couldn't say how the whole thing would work out) but one that is probably not right for TV, as they need to move on to the final conflict quite quickly.

The Sansa story in season 5. I really like the idea of it.

I`m enjoying the Sansa story line right now. I think its interesting. And it gives her more to do, and I`m always behind more Sansa.

the single most awesome change is NO TRAVOLOGUES I think D&D made a lot of changes that left the main story intact but ignored or cut many side stories that enriched reading the books. But the travologues in AFFC & ADWD served no point (see GOT: Cat goes from Winterfell to Kingslanding in the blink of an eye). Good riddance ...

Well, Tyrion's travelogue is still mostly intact for now and his was the worst for me in the book. EDIT: in a show where Littlefinger and Sansa can teleport from Moat Cailin to Winterfell in half an episode, why is Tyrion not yet in Slaver's Bay?

Sansa's Season 5 arc (it doesn't make sense really in LF's part, but I am enjoying it)

I actually enjoy Tyrion's travel this season, much better than the books! Tyrion and Jorah were great last episode. I quite liked Griff and Aegon but that storyline would have made things too complicated. But I'm very glad they cut PENNY. She was irritating as hell. Sansa's storyline this season isn't perfect but I enjoy the fact that I have no idea what's going to happen. I also think show Hizdahr is much more likable than book Hizdahr. In the books he just felt spoiled, distant and unrelatable. Now I'm actually interested in what happens to him. Also enjoy Shireen. Shireen with Davos, Shireen with Stannis, Shireen with everyone. But the best change that comes to my mind is ALLISER THORNE. I loved it when in the last season episode 9 this ultimate arsehole suddenly became something of a hero. I really enjoy his scenes and interacting with Jon. Their relationship is really interesting,

Well, you guys have hit on everything already. I particularly think it makes more sense for the kids to be older given the important roles they get right of the back. This and the ridiculous size of the Wall are probably the first things that made me wonder how much Martin thinks about some of the details of his books. There's no doubt that he focuses on some: we know a lot about the clothing, food, and setting of the story but even with the planned 5 year gap, these kids were doing too much at a very young age regardless of the fact that it was set in medieval times.
I really agree with the posters who said the weird hair was a good thing to lose. I'm also glad we lost the extreme mutilations: no nose, half a face bitten off. That was really too much.
And the posters who've mentioned Sansa and Cat's "defining moments" being scrapped, I agree, I don't think Martin ever thought they'd be as permanent as they've become.
The travel scenes were handled better on the show but I do understand what I think Martin was after in the books. Quests were not quick or interesting. However, that makes for slightly boring reads and even more boring views. Amen to the missing Penny. I hated her complacency.
Finally, Sansa's arc on the show has been up and down, imho, but I really like what we've seen from her in the last 2 seasons. I'm very curious where things will wind up for her this season as well as in the books.

Older kids Margaery and Olenna having a bigger role Tywin/Arya Jaqen in Braavos training Arya (adds a familiar face to her storyline, which is good considering how removed she is from the rest of the characters) No fAegon Mereen is not as confusing as it is in the books Cersei (I prefer the show version, I think is more nuanced than in the books) Ned saying Baelor (didn't GRRM himself said that he wished he had thought of that?) Less travelogues (I know is frustrating when some character just seem to teleport from one place to another, but I prefer that to a travelogue scene) Tyrion not losing his nose No Arianne (sorry, I just find the character POV too vapid) No Euron, Victarion, or Damphair so far (I really dislike the Greyjoys except for Asha and Theon) Arya's list as a result of Yoren's story In general, any scene in which two characters that are not POVs in the books talk, like Cersei/Robert, Tywin/Olenna, Roose/Walder Frey (although I wanted to kill them both) Brienne vs Sandor

Something like a drill sergent, he's gruff and unlikeable because thats what he has to be but ultimately he is an honorable man. I cant help but love the scene where Jon names him first ranger, and it seems hes about to make him Latrine commander. Then the bit where he looks as though he's gonna defend Janos Slynt (PBUH), squaring up to Edd for a tense moment before stepping aside. Thorne has became a bit more of a badass. Maybe they realised they needed a few more characters at the wall you could connect with after they cleaned house somewhat last series?
