Nice recap! I did notice a little typo: I adored Emilia Clarke's acting in this moment - she is the best in her scenes with dragons where she just nails the feeling of both loving them and being frightened. There is such joy on her face when she sees Drogon, her baby, safe and alive, but there is also fear because he is a dragon after all. Emilia wasn't very good this season but this year she is much better.
You meant last season, right? Yep! Thanks, this is what happens when one writes late at night

There are a couple of reviewers on YouTube who thought the episode was boring because there wasn't enough action and it was more about plotting and discussion between characters. I feel like this might be because there is this high expectation now that since The Purple Wedding occurred in the second episode of Season 4, so people kept waiting for something big like that to happen in this episode. Jon's scenes from this episode were from his last two chapters of ASOS, and whether D&D are diverging from the books or not, for the rest of the storylines there really aren't a lot of WTF moments in AFFC and ADWD, especially near the beginning. I swear some people don't actually watch the show. The whole deal about 'WTF moments' is just painful, but I guess that's what most people look for in their entertainment. You're right about season 4 too but I reckon most of us can agree that the start of this season has been better for the gradual build in pace. I thought this episode got it a bit wrong sometimes but the general feel has been great.

Yeah I agree with you. I think that "The Wars to Come" and "The House of Black and White" are definitely better than the first two episodes of Season 2 and 3, but this whole idea that some people are expecting WTF moments is ridiculous. There is obviously build up to these moments, they don't just jump right into them. Season 5 is really a new chapter in the series as Season 4 ended a lot of plotlines started in Season 1. Now there needs to be a gradual build in pace instead of rushing to big character deaths.

Someone on reddit just made an astute observation about the parallel between Dany and Robb, in that Robb was carrying out the execution in order to emulate his father, whereas Dany's situation came about through trying not to emulate hers.

I feel like Drogon somehow Knew Dany was upset, and needed to see him. The way he crawled down towards her like it's ok mom I still love you even if everyone else is pissed at you. Great scene. O'Drogon. He's your pal.

That is a very good observation. I like it too. Honestly, I always find the first couple of episodes of GoT seasons to be a bit on the slow side. Usually they build up their momentum. Season 4 was obviously different, dealing with the fall out from the Red Wedding and then Joffrey's wedding, but every season is not like that.

Haha, I was reading comments at another board about Brienne's seemingly endless quest, and came across this. Cracked me up.

Well, Lady Fevre Dream will be glad to see that AngryGoTFan is back in action--she was worried he'd finally cracked and gone over the edge.
And then we have this, one of the 'yay!' moments in the episode:
And then we have this!

For those who thought the Lord Commander election was rushed, the actor who played Denys Mallister still had a few scenes left to film when he died, so I'm wondering if that had something to do with it.

Good point. And a bummer. I had the theory that Denys was going to be the de facto leader of the Watch after the Ides of Marsh, but now maybe Thorne will take over

They made it pretty clear that whatever scenes JJ Murphy had left to film were pretty insignificant. He was more or less a featured extra so there's no way he was going to be involved in anything more than the election itself.
Regardless of what extra shots they had of Mallister planned for that scene, it clearly played out the way they wanted it to in the script. And personally I'm glad as I think the NW election is one of the most drawn-out overrated sequences in the book. It's topped off by a fucking bird arriving on the scene and saying one of the candidate's names which apparently swings the vote. Stellar. The important thing to convey in that scene is that it's important that Jon gains barely enough support to thwart a Thorne/Slynt alliance and that Sam steps up for his friend in order to make it happen. Done and done.

And then we have this!
So how does one sit astride a prickly pear like that in a dress ?! Or wearing less! Sidesaddle?

I agree, King Tommen, I really didn't need to see Sam's manipulation of Pyke and Mallister. The Slynt put down was very good.

LOL, damn good question! Ouch! She'll have to ask Tyrion to make her a special saddle.

I noticed that Hizdahr disappeared during the riot. You see him standing next to Daario and then he isn't in the shot when Dany is escorted away. It probably doesn't really mean much, but could it be possible that he sent some signal to the Sons of the Harpy.

Barristan! Glad they are giving him stuff to do, that's my man Meereen and the Wall were really good again this episode, I felt. Kings Landing, The Vale/Brienne, and Ki g's Landing all kind of sucked again. Well, mostly. I think Kevan saved the Small Council meeting. Tyrion and Varys wasn't very enjoyable. I found the scene they had this week and last week rather bland. Conley Hill redeemed it somewhat, with some good acting, but overall unimpressed (and did not think Dinklage was very good either. Yes, grab your torches and pitchforks and come burn me as a heretic) Brown and Lollys...meh. Was a bit disappointed by Braavos. Visually stunning, but the storyline is being slow to kick off here. Hopefully now Arya is in the HoBaW Maisie can truly start to shine. About her list; I assume Ser Ilyn was removed as a matter of respect? Though, I did hear the actor had some good news lately?
