Dany's Flight--All That You Hoped For?

Wait, Drogon didn't kill hundreds of innocent civilians? The whitewashing of team Dany continues!

The flight had so much more potential but for some reason it felt a bit off. Maybe it was Emilia's acting. Music was superb. The fight scenes before Drogon's appearance were quite lame tbh.

Good but clearly not good enough. 7.

Am I the only one who thought that her acting was quite inconsistent in this episode? In some scenes she absolutely rocked it and in some she was like "meh".

That's always been Emilia's problem though IMO. If nothing else, she's consistently inconsistent.

I've done some re-watch of older Season 1 and 2 stuff and she had some brilliant moments, especially during her Dothraki days. It seems like when she became a Queen and the slaver stuff is when she started being stilted and I honestly think she's trying to act distant, haughty and "Queen-like" in some ways imitating Lena Headey but failing. 

Exactly. It's frustrating to see that Emilia can't seem to be consistent. It's getting quite disturbing in some scenes. 

She made some very strange faces that seemed almost like grimaces to me. For example when she pulled the javelin out of Drogon or when she starts to ride him. 

i agree i wanted MORE from the scene. more emotion from dany other then sorrow and regret, im not sure why her face was like that. i wanted a badass targaryen fire and blood moment. but thats just me

I think we are spoiled by Peter Jackson and his zillion dollar CGI work, King Kong , Smaug ... just looking at it I could see the budget ... probably the most expensive TV CGI ever done (except maybe in HBO's The Pacific), but certain economies show.  more long shots would have been great but costly.

Looking at it lots of good stuff:

Drogon's 'fire ball' entrance.
The hover glide against the massive structure of the Pit in the background.
The landing, Drogon doing a snap dragon on the guy charging Dany, he lunges fast!
That guy kinda come apart.
I like the way Drogon does the rotating flame thrower sweep.
A pull back shot as Drogon gets the second group.
That must have cost.
Seems there is collateral damage in that discharge.
After one guy gigs him with a spear it's full flame into the camera, cool.
More collateral damage, some Meereeneese master where in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Some more limb to limb wrecking by Drogon.
Dany gets upset when he takes two spears.
Dany pulls out one spear (this is similar to the book).
Drogon is so berserkergang he turns on Dany.
But holds his fire, Dany stares him down, that is similar to the book, 'cept she has the whip (at this point in the novel he singes her, but she catches her reflection in Drogon's eye).
Here Drogon goes all googly eyes at his mom.
Someone gigs him with a spear.
(Twice this season Dany has tried to stroke his snout and can't make it.)
Dany is  concerned for Drogon's well being and makes a choice to get him out of there.
She climbs on him. 
Alas this is done with one foot going up and then cut away.
We see her grabbing a dragon spike. Kind a funny looks like she's thinking , er..., I am supposed to sit this prickly pear! 
Amusing.
A beat.
Is Emilia sitting on a prop or is that fore part of Drogon CGI'ed in?
Danny says "Valahd".
(All Valyrian Dragon understand Valyrian!)
(I have to say the old Hollywood ruse is in play, why are SoH holding back? Yeah I know Dragon sign.)

Look closely , Drogon eyes tell you he heard her. Cool.

Drogon does a head shake, like , OK!, cool!
A neck spear disappears.

Drogon's gooney bird take off, cool!
He plows forward.
Awkward shot of Dany looking backward, this should have been a pull back.
Then, O Man!, a 'helicopter shot' of Drogon and Dany about to launch.
(This is a great shot , can see Dany on Drogon's back.)
Cut to a little awkward close shot of Dany bare backing.
The launch is great! Drogon sings!
Very cool , but little awkward shots of Dany and Drogon yawing over the Pit.
Then, is Dany wearing Dothraki leathers under her gown , how would she know that!
Then composites that , given more budget could have been done better.
Finally a Valyrian (well as close as you can get) dragon riding , after hundreds of years!

You know as CGI VFX , not bad.
