I'm still amazed that movie Love got nominated couple years back. It looked like something that would cause a person to shoot themselves after watching I did not see that one....but maybe the Academy was having a moment and they vowed to never repeat it? Not that this has anything to do with the Oscars but Johnny Get Your Gun was one of the bleakest movies I've seen. Of course that came to my attention after the video for Metallica's One song and I was like, um, thanks Metallica? Yeah I haven't seen this one either, years back I had this plan to watch all the BP nominees but I never saw this one, nor finished Selma and American Sniper last year - so fucking boring. This year I'm 7/8 and only The Revenant is left

And for good reason, it was an excellent film and deserved its nominations. The love they showed it was one of those rare moments where a tiny film with 0 commercial prospects broke through to get major nominations and that was because it had passionate support. Amour is not something the academy regrets, and I would be bitterly disappointed if they ever did show any regret for that.

45 Years nomination for Rampling is pretty remarkable as well. That movie is 100 mins long and I read inside report from Academy sources that the members didn't finish it because it was 'too long'

Beasts of No Nation's problem was that they really dropped the ball in the 3rd act. It felt so aimless in the last 30 minutes or so.
I fucking hated every single second of Amour lol.

Idris wasn't as big of a snub as Abraham Attah for Beasts, IMO. He was a lot better, though I would've been happy with Idris being nominated. Tremblay, Dano, and Shannon not being in that category is criminal. Is that the kid? Because if so I completely agree. He was the best part of the movie. And I'm a huge fan of Elba.

Yes, Attah was the kid. The Academy could've done something really cool this year by nominating both him and Tremblay and they dropped the ball.

God, this is so gross. Usually, I like to avoid screaming "racist" at the drop of a hat, and even now I wouldn't quite label AMPAS as racist for this, but it is troubling when all 40 acting nominees across 2 years are white. For two reasons. One - it shows that the good roles are just not there for minorities. Who was in contention last year? David Oyelowo? And Idris Elba this year? That's a problem. And second, Idris Elba this year was an actual snub. He hit GG/SAG/BAFTA and missed Oscar. When that happens to the only POC in contention and the entirety of the crew of actors who slipped over the line are white, it sends a poor message. Something is broken in Hollywood and it needs to be fixed.

Del toro and Elba should have for sure been nominated.

The problem is definitely within the Industry more than the Oscars themselves.

if Leo doesn't win best actor He probably won't. The Academy just loves to nominate him and not give him the Oscar, is like they enjoy how sad he looks every time he doesn't win. Plus Redmayne has been nominated for a biopic. The Academy loves biopics. Regarding the oscars being too white, I think is more of a symptom than a problem by itself, and by that I mean the lack of diversity is still a problem in Hollywood, and that is reflected by the Oscars, which are mainly focused on Hollywood films. Of course the Oscars could help by nominating more diverse films, but it wouldn't solve the actual problem, it would just make it look like is solved. It would also help if the members of the Academy weren't mainly a bunch of old white dudes. But that is just my opinion.

This is why i dont take much interest in the awards, its all bullshit

At least Chris Rock's hosting. So the whiteness of the nominees will at the very least give him some good, vengeful material to work with for his monologue. If nothing else.

I've come to think that the social justice warriors have their place, and it's more positive than I first thought. They over-simplify. They're shrill. But they are making people pay attention. And that is forcing conversations that no one has had before in the public sphere. It will take more than just picking out the one or two good actors of color during award season though. There need to be more people of color writing and making films, and in positions of power to get them seen. And all that takes real social movement, money and time to spend on things like art. #Oscarsssowhite is a start though, and it's pretty funny. No one is funnier than a group of people who've been oppressed for so long that they had to turn to comedy for survival. This is a good story on the topic: www.npr.org/2016/01/15/463224137/oscars-still-so-white-academy-nominates-nearly-all-white-actors-again

My husband said if Leo doesn't get an Oscar this year, next year they should have a "Best Leonardo Dicaprio" Oscar.
