Just as last year, this whole OscarsSoWhite thing pisses me off. The only snub this year appears to be Elba. That's it. They are coming up in those articles with those who were snubbed but the actress in Tangerine was in tiny, indie movie and Oscar Isaac really didn't get that much notice among critics or Academy memebers for Ex-Machina. At least this year I'm given to understand Elba would be a worthy nominee, last year it was Selma which imho was incredibly mediocre movie so it really didn't deserve any nominations Del Toro was snubbed for Sicario. But he is a previous Oscar winner and really didn't get much chance for nomination this year, sadly. The problem is with industry not with Academy in particular. Sure, Academy nominating with diversity could make a bit of a difference, but who should be nominated - someone who deserves it or someone who would be nominated for reasons other than quality of performance? Great actors miss every year and i don't think Elba missed out because of the color of his skin Straight outta Compton only got one nominations even though it got good reviews, the same with Creed which was also considered a very good movie. Yeah but they didn't get major nominations...the competition in BP category was very strong, even Carol didn't get in in spite of getting many nominations in other categories

The #OscarsSoWhite thing sort of backfired last year with Selma getting a Best Pic nom. It's like they only nominated it to say "Hey, we're not racist!" I wish there were more diversity, but it's all about how people campaign.
I'm overall pleased with the Oscar noms, but I would completely revamp the Supporting Actor line up if I could. I'd keep Hardy and Ruffalo and add Paul Dano, Michael Shannon, and Jacob Tremblay. That would've been my dream team.
I also hate (and I realize I'm alone here) that Age of Ultron didn't get a visual effects nomination. The VFX in that film were amazing. Yes, Judy the Bear was great, but one scene over an entire movie? No. I wish I could swap out someone for Avengers there.

I forgot to mention something, for those of you more plugged in to the award season Rachel McAdams nomination is a bit out there , isn't it. I can't remember her receiving many nomination or much buzz. Also, Alicia Vekander would also get a best Actress nomination but apparently was snubbed in that category. McAdams has been widely predicted/expected for months. Not a sure thing by any stretch, but not out of nowhere.

Also, I haven't seen Carol yet to judge it for myself, but the critics fucking loved it and the industry's reluctance to accept lgbt dramas is really fucking annoying. First BBM lost to motherfucking CRASH and now this. Smfh AMPAS. Smfh.

I love George Miller, tho the more worthy The Witches of Eastwick was only noninated for Sound and Music in 1988. Miller did win an Oscar for Happy Feet in 2005, his astoundingly good Australian compatriot Peter Weir has not. I like and was entertained by Fury Road, but am puzzled at it's critical acclaim. When the NY Times put it on their best list I had to go back and watch it again, and yeah it does have interesting elements and Charlize Theron was so good she should have garnered a nomination. But, there are too many 'comic book' elements and an over saturation of hyped Action, I was put off these. No I don't agree with this Oscar nom.

Oscars are going to get the Oscars so white criticism again.Really sad not to see any love for Beasts of No Nation. Would have loved to see Ryan Coogler for Best Director too. My predictions: Revenant for Best Pic, Irrantiu for Director again, Leo is best actor, Brie Larson best actress, Sly for supporting, Jennifer Jason Leigh for supporting (I have a blind love for her). Just as last year, this whole OscarsSoWhite thing pisses me off. The only snub this year appears to be Elba. That's it. At least this year I'm given to understand Elba would be a worthy nominee, last year it was Selma which imho was incredibly mediocre movie so it really didn't deserve any nominations I did not see 12 Years a Slave in 2013 but when it won I did go watch it. A good story and cast, but a badly made film. I am really off put by McQueen's scene composition. As a black film maker Spike Lee has outclassed McQueen but never nominated as a director. Yes about Oscar Isaac and Ex-Machina, a totally ignored film. For a 2015 film Ex Machina is the only one I have watched more than once and it is the film that made the most impression on me in 2015. Interestingly Alicia Vikander who blew me away in Ex Machina did get a nomination for 2015 but a different film.

I think The Revenant effects also had to do with other stuff, though, like that scene where he falls off the cliff in trailer? With Lubezki you never know when the cinematography ends and special effects begin

Yeah I hated that movie but VFX were done well. Still the worst thing for me is Williams' nomination for Star Wars score. It's so derivative and it's all a repeat from previous ones, yet this was eligible when The Revenant was not?

I liked William's score, but I'm shocked it was was eligible. I assumed it wouldn't be. Alexandre Desplat's Deathly Hallows score was deemed ineligible because he used a few notes from Hedwig's theme from earlier films, it felt like Williams did the same and didn't get penalized for it.
Steve Jobs had a great score, it's a shame they didn't get in.

Really hope Ennio Morricone wins for best score. Hard to believe he's only won one Oscar.

There were so many better scores this year. I just can't with FR getting 10 nods and not the one for score and Theron

Theron>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Lawrence.
It sucks that Suffragette was so "meh" Carey Mulligan was Oscar worthy in it. She would've been better than Lawrence too.

I think the first thing that failed Mulligan was the script, then the direction. In her big scene where they take away her boy the camera doesn't even focus on her, which was such a bad call. Lawrence's performance was the best thing about this mess however the nomination is ludicrous especially that it's the sole nomination for the film, the only plus is that her having that ridiculous amount of nominations is already causing backlash especially when the media contrast it with Rampling gaining her first nod at the age of 70

Really hope Ennio Morricone wins for best score. Hard to believe he's only won one Oscar. And that is one the Academy gave him out of embarrassment , it was an Honorary Award. He was nominated five times before that , and some of that was original and extraordinary work. (And he was not even nominated for some work that should have been.)
