@envie it's on me. I get riled up about those two things I wrote about in previous post. I listed stuff that I have problems with in this storyline, I mean really I was fine with it, somewhat as the season was airing but then it was over and Sansa's final scenes were not a pay off. Even if it happens now for me it is too late and it was all for nothing. But at least thanks to this talk that followed I have ...well still hate the storyline but I hate it about 1% less than before I get you on that, I really do! I didn't know if it would be a good payoff and I was horrified when the leaks started happening that Sansa was going to Winterfell and the implications of that with Ramsay. I didn't want to believe it. Surely they wouldn't totally obliterate what's left of her character, right? But then it ended up working for me. No, not what Ramsay did to Sansa, that's still horrible. It's horrible what Ramsay did to Jeyne Poole... worse in fact in the book - but I felt the show writers handled it beautifully all things considered which is why I praised it in my re-watch. It could have been SO much worse and an absolute failure. They took a big risk doing what they did. It's a gamble that won't pay off until this season is my guess. They planned this out long ago from the start and I'm sure it was hotly debated long before any of us ever knew it was even going to exist. It's ok to be riled up about it - we're all discussing it as intellectuals discussing a controversial topic that's always heated whenever it's put in entertainment. Rape is one of the worst things a person can do to another and our society still struggles with it every single day - men, women and children are raped and it's horrific. Should we never portray it in movies and shows? I think it has to be there - it has to be addressed as equally as other things we humans need to fix. We need to stop killing one another and discriminating against others for race and sex and religion (or non religion) - but that's probably never going to happen in our lifetimes. And so we keep pushing on the bruise to see if it still hurts by putting it in songs, putting it in movies and books and everywhere else because it's painful and we need to heal from it but can't. We feel helpless to fix it. As Brienne said ... there's nothing more hateful than failing to protect the ones you love. Appreciate y'all! For me whenever rape is portrayed in movies or TV series it has to be with a very good cause. And that was lacking here. I think Sansa has enough of the cause to go against the Boltons and it was unnecessary. So coupled with the way they handled Dorne and possible - and I pray it will happen - LS plot - this just shows the writers as mysoginistic to me. I think it would be far better to show Sansa talking about Boltons betraying her family than having her raped by them. How much can she endure? Couple that with Sophie Turner's disenchanted comments about how she thought she will badass in s5 after s4 finale....it just looks bad, I think the show is suffering from not having female writers there because between Jaime/Cersei rape and this it just all fires up as really bad writing. Nothing they can do with Sansa will salvage that for me, but at least if they include Stoneheart it can show me they aren't fools who stick to their mysoginistic ways It is ok to be passionate. I understand every position in this discussion, really, because before S5 I was against Sansa's marriage with Ramsay. I thought that would victimize her again. And it did, but I surprisingly liked it because there were some greater things that I just can't ignore. I agree that that storyline didn't have strong pay off. It was just along set-up. She learned about Rickon and Bran and nothing happened with that in S5. We find out that Walda is pregnant and nothing happened with that in S5. We knew that Brienne is there to help Sansa and nothing happened there last season. Sansa found out about Jon and nothing happened with that. They build up her antagonism with Ramsay and nothing happened there. There are more examples. But I think the Northern storyline will be great for someone who will start watching this show after S6. I think then, with S5 and S6 combined it will be really great and powerful. They just split it in 2. And that's why I'm against any more spliting for AFFC and ADWD. I think Sansa/LF relationship has been incredibly badly written. It is just...implausible and incomprehensible. Even if she kills him - which I'm sure she won't do - she is scared of icy river after being raped repeatedly - this was just butchered beyond belief. Most here can. I cannot but at least I limited myself to 2 storylines I go She-Hulk over so I'm making progress here, people.

I really am trying gorgeous Tom Hardy

Just re-watched 5x07 - The Gift.
I'm curious really what Littlefinger's got going on with the Tyrells beyond the obvious alliance they made to kill off Joffrey.
When Olenna meets with Littlefinger in his torn up brothel, she seems very threatening with him - what was your take on that scene? Littlefinger obviously has another card up his sleeve because that's when he plays the Lancel card but later we'll see him lie to Cersei about Sansa being with the Boltons so he's spinning webs in all directions. Is he pitting the Tyrells against the Lannisters and the Boltons against Stannis in hopes they'll all destroy one another and he gets to then snuggle up with whoever is left when it's all over?
I'm still struggling to try and figure out his 'great game' in all this as we move to Season 6.
Like others, I suspect Littlefinger isn't going to die this season - he still has a lot of game to play.

He'll keep playing everyone off of each other and position himself to come out rich and still standing. He despises the nobility as much as he envies them, so I think he wants to see them all die. Except Sansa. I think he wants to control her.

It is far more insidious than pure malice and greed ... it consumes all before it, even those we love. It will be his undoing.

I just rewatched The Dance of Dragons and I cannot get over how dumb the dude with the spear in Daznak's was. The Braavosi has Jorah on the ground like wait two seconds for him to finish Jorah off and THEN stab the Braavosi with the spear and you win easy like come on bro

welp ,,, just finished 5x08 re-watch and still blown away a year later - Hardhome. Damn. In 30 minutes flat they blew my mind with amazing fight choreography, special effects, tension, music and epic lines to rival any blockbuster fantasy movie AND beat the pants off of 6 years of undead in TWD. Seriously. The first half of Season 5 was "oh that's interesting, wow that's cool... and then WHAM! Hardhome happened.

I get that he has a bashing style, but he should have shown more facility with that sword than he did in the pit. His fight scene in The Gift was way better. He only won because of his opponents' stupid, and unbelievable, mistakes. The only things I liked about his fight were the eye exchanges with Dany and that call back to how he used his armor advantage to beat Qotho, and how it failed this time. I did like that.

I've always overlooked the overly dramatic way they had Jorah 'win' in Daznak's because I felt the emphasis was on Daenerys and how she played out her emotions (Emilia does great facial emotion when she's in the right moment). I also felt like they made his fight more 'dramatic' and less realistic to show he was "putting on a show" for his Queen. It was supposed to be a little over the top. The only part I disagreed with entirely was when he grabbed the guy's spear - I doubt it's seriously possible to stop a full spear thrust from impact with your bare hands like that.

I've been completely slacking on my rewatch. Finished s3 yesterday. I want to say it's my second favorite after s1 but I need to watch s4 again as I've forgotten a bit. Walk of Punishment through Kissed by Fire is such an awesome run of eps. Theons storyline is probably the weakest, everything else is good to great. I think it's the best season for introducing memorable minor characters. Locke, Karl Tanner, Tormund, QoT, BWB, Qyburn, more I'm forgetting. Fairleys performance in Rains is still in my opinion the best single episode performance from any actor on the show, just gut-wrenching. Also Jack Gleeson was comedy gold this season.

Season 3 is definitely my favorite after 1. I have them now at 1>3>5>4>2.
I haven't had time to do an actual rewatch to gear up for the new season, so I watched some Blu Ray commentaries from season 5 the other night. Watched 5x05 for Iwan Rheon & Michael McElhatton, 5x09 for Peter Dinklage & Iain Glen, and 5x10 for Lena Headey.

Same. I rewatched Blackwater and WotW few days ago. This has been said dozen times, but 4x09's ending sucks so bad.

Just finished my final hours of re-watch with 5x09 Dance of Dragons.
This is the episode I hate to love and love to hate. It does contain my favorite scene as a Targaryen supporter afterall.
The creators were quite clever (though I hated it at the time it aired) for book-ending the sacrifice of Shireen and Daznak's Pit like that. They had me crying with anguish for Shireen and then minutes later crying with joy when Drogon showed up to rescue his Mama from the Harpies.
I hated the sacrifice of Shireen. It's still one of the most difficult scenes for me to watch. I'm a Mother though, so seeing Selyse finally crumble at the last minute and too late was really the kicker. Man, what a punch in the gut.

The burning of Shireen is my least favourite scene in the show, not because it's badly acted or anything like that, technically it's flawless - I just hate that it happened. It's totally irrational and I can't really explain it, I just know that I've never hated anything the show has done that much. Even the Red Wedding, as horrible as it was, had a strange beauty to it, the burning of Shireen was just disgusting. It made me sick. I almost felt like I was watching a documentary about the holocaust or something, I've ever had such a visceral reaction to a TV show and I'll never watch that scene again. Sadly, it also kind of ruined Daznak's Pit for me.
I know Game of Thrones is a show were horrible things happen all the time, but for me, this was simply too much.

Same order here! And 109, 110, 209, 309 and 508 are the top five episodes ever, IMHO.

That's why I still continue to watch Daznak's and the flight of Dany & Drogon separately from the episode on Youtube and have many times over. I couldn't stop feeling horrible about Shireen at the time the show originally aired it and I hated them for doing that. I waited so many years to see Daenerys fly on Drogon so I couldn't watch it properly with the rest of the episode. If GRRM does end up sacrificing Shireen as well, I will still hate the scene, but if they're staying true to the story then I can't hate them even as upset as the scene made me. They are the storytellers and even though it was very painful, it's part of the story and I have to accept it. But watching it again just now was pretty difficult. Still shaking myself out of it and starting 5x10 now.

It's funny because all the reasons you've mentioned are why I found it the most evocative, powerful scene the show has ever done. I wouldn't say I loved it, for obvious reasons, but I think other than Hardhome it might be the most effective sequence. I can totally understand why someone would have the reaction you've had, because it was utterly devastating. It hit me harder than 10 Red Weddings. Edit: Also finished my rewatch of Season 5 today and it was nearly as hard to watch. It's a hard thing to review critically because it's pretty gut-level stuff.
