Season 3 they sent 4 screeners and Season 4 they sent 3. Not sure about the first 2 seasons but it's probably in the same neighbourhood.
I know this season that some places only got 2 episodes instead of 4 (like Tower of the Hand). I'm not entirely clear on the policy as to who gets them but I do agree that the net is probably too large. Legit critics would never do this because it would get them fired, it's not worth it.
An easy way to tell which episodes critics received was by how quickly episode reveiws were posted online after airing. You can always find them up within minutes of the episode ending for the first handful (because the reviewers have written them ahead of time) but then after that run of episodes are done, you have to wait a couple hours to see them every week.

For season 1 they sent out SIX episodes actually.
And you're right, sati, there'll probably still be something next year. I imagine s6 will start out swinging a la s4, so two eps. would work fine. I guess they'll just be way more selective about who they give them to.
They probably could've just done 3 eps. for screeners again this year really.

I think for season 2 they only send out 1 because that one leaked. The people who only got 1-2 screeners were probably lower profile journalists. It's a risky move to send out almost half of the season to begin with. Sure, in the perfect world people wouldn't leak, but you gotta be more careful, since it's not the perfect world. For season 1 they sent out SIX episodes actually.

I thought the 'screeners' where pretty circumscribed, that is you had to have like platinum press credentials at a , say, 'registered' media outlet? I don't know, but almost seems HBO got very generous with screening and did not sort out some less than trusted representatives? I don't know. I could see the list being reduced to only major media organizations next year. And maybe, like , screenings for film critics of old times gone by a viewing at a location provided by HBO that could not be copied in any way.

This time , years past, there would have been an announcement of green lighting season 6, put season 6 has been green lighted. During season 4. So what now? May not know until season 5 is over.

Still curious about what HBO gets for it's weekly survey , won't know E2 data for a while. Wonder now if we ever find out non USA viewings, out side of pirating!

The E2 L7 numbers should be interesting to see once they're released. The leaks would obviously lessen the audience for the first-run viewing but you would think even those who had seen the leaks would catch up to the episode so they could watch it in higher quality.

Still a really good rating. It still beat everything in the time slot including the NBA playoff.

6.71 million is still really good. It's not off much from episode 2. I'll be curious to see if episode 5 is a significant increase since it also airs on Mother's Day here in the US.

Honestly, I don't think that the majority of people care about quality that much. The quality of the leaks was serviceable enough that people were able to watch and enjoy them, and, for many, a higher quality is not a big enough factor to motivate them to go back and watch it all again. Many simply want story progression without the need to enjoy the episode to the maximum degree- I think the higher quality obsession is something that is simply contained within internet forums. Even during regular seasons, the most popular torrents are 480p, and most of my friends who've watched the leaks have no intention of watching the episodes again.

The Live +3 ratings (ratings for night of airing + 3 days afterwards) are out for E3 and it actually eclipsed the Live +3 ratings for the premiere (8.847M vs 8.807). This is a new HBO record.
Because the live airing ratings are down from the premiere, this would indicate to me that just as much, if not more people are watching the third episode as they did the first but a bigger percentage of people were watching it later on, not live as compared to the premiere). There's pretty much no other explanation for this other than the leaks. The first run ratings should most likely eclipse the premiere once we get to the 505 and everyone will be in the same boat as far as episodes viewed.
