Episode 1 set new ratings high. According to a Nielsen estimate, about 8 million people tuned in to the series’ 9/8c broadcast. That number was up 17 percent (1.16 million viewers) from Season 4’s premiere and clocks in at roughly 800,000 more viewers than any other Thrones episode ever.tvline.com/2015/04/14/game-of-thrones-ratings-record-season-5-premiere/

A 4.19 in the demo is FANTASTIC. The raw numbers are pretty impressive, but it's the demo that really matters (well maybe not so much for HBO if their money-making is purely subscription-driven, idk if they have adverts or anything) and it killed it there. Excellent numbers. It also set a new record in the UK, averaging 1.57m viewers, which is something like 47 times the Sky Atlantic average www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-32299006

That's really good considering that the first 4 episodes leaked. HBO has got to be thrilled.

I imagine most people who watched the leaks were people that weren't going to watch it on HBO anyway, so it didn't make a lot of difference to the rates.

Is the rating for THoBaW in yet?

HoBaW was watched by 6.81 million live viewers.
I think the drop might have been due to these factors: - Major power outages in several parts of the United States - The typical drop that accompanies the post-premiere episode - The leaked episodes, that have, by now, been downloaded a staggering 32 million times - The NBA, NHL, etc.

Seems HBO said they were going to make a 'completest' survey of viewers for the show, which I think mean all week viewing, DVR , I don't know everything that was not pirated ( )! Still wondering if this means non-USA viewings? Numbers may have dropped for legal viewing but apparently pirating is breaking records! torrentfreak.com/game-of-thrones-piracy-surges-to-new-high-150422/32 million !

I'm laughing so hard at HBO and piracy - first it's all like 'yey, we have the most pirated TV show on Earth', then they send screeners to pretty much everyone who is eligible to receive them - and mind you not 1 or 2 but 4 which is basically half of the season - the show leaks and they are all like 'we will send letters. But there are no legal consequences. But not cool you guys'

There won't be any screeners out next year, that's for sure.

Sending 4 episodes of a 10 episode show for review is pretty standard fare for cable shows. It's pretty hard for reviewers to give a proper review without getting a few episodes (especially with a serialized show with so many plotlines like GoT).
They've done this pretty well every season give or take an episode and there's never been any problem. Until this year, when some a-hole decided to violate the agreement and post all the episodes for download.
HBO didn't care so much about piracy when it was for episodes that had already been aired but it's a bit different when a jackass throws them online before HBO has a chance to put them out there for their subscribers to see. That's the kind of thing that affects first run viewership and damages the brand.
And it's funny to some people I'm sure but all it means is that the 99.999999% of critics who did nothing wrong will be deprived of screeners next year because some idiot wanted to prove a point or couldn't keep it in their pants. And that means all the reviews that fans look forward to every year will no longer be available and everyone will watch week to week.
It's not HBO's fault that they were adhering to a screener practice that exists throughout the television industry and has worked just fine until now. So we all get punished now for one person's selfishness.

I'm surprised this hasn't happened sooner to be honest. It always happens with Academy Awards screeners (sometimes with the watermark's still on them, so you can tell which celebrity's staff/people leaked 'em).

It's not HBO's fault that they were adhering to a screener practice that exists throughout the television industry and has worked just fine until now. So we all get punished now for one person's selfishness. Any examples of HBO sending FOUR screeners before? They should have been selective in who they send the screeners to. If people who are legitimate critics got them that's one thing, but even people who run fan sites got them. You give people too much, they will abuse it. And Konrad I think they will send 1-2 screeners next year, they need some sort of publicity. I think 1-2 eps is sufficient, especially when you look at some of those 'reviews' filled with misspelled names, 8 paragraphs long....
