This needs its own thread. I seriously had dreams about this for years and the moment I gave up on it, Sony's press conference happened. I know some people are afraid that they'll mess with the story and the characters, but I'm quite optimistic on that front. What worries me is the gameplay. I wish they'd do a modernized version of the FF7 battle system, but I'm afraid they'll change it completely and do some bullshit system like in 13. What's your take on that? What I love is that they basically tell us in the trailer to calm the shit down and trust in them. :lol2. " The reunion at hand may bring joy, it may bring fear. But let us embrace whatever it brings, for they are coming back. At last, the promise has been made."

Although I am sad that FFVII is getting a remake and the vastly superior FFX just got a remaster FFX doesn't need a remake, because it's already perfect. The original FFVII is a freaking mess from a technical point of view. It's glitchy as hell, the graphics are atrocious (from today's perspective) and the english translation is awful (and the german one is even worse ... ). The great story and the outstanding soundtrack are really the only things keeping that game together, imo. I'm afraid that they're gonna screw up with the remake. I have very little trust left in Square Enix, and if they decide for some dumb reason that the story of FF7 needs a little more melodrama or bad dialogue - they could easily ruin it for me. Just imagine Aeris' death scene with freaking J-Pop playing in the background or something like that ... or Cloud screaming "NOOOOOOOOO!". If the story feels the same way as the original, I'll probably love it - but if it feels off, I might hate it. I don't have much worries in regards to the gameplay, honestly. If SE can do only one thing right, it's making beautiful games that are fun to play.

Bring it, motherfucker because two can play at this game I actually love FF10. I really, really do. It was the last great Final Fantasy game. But FF10 being "vastly superior" to FF7 just sounds like madness to me. But that's ok. Any Final Fantasy game from 6 to 10 is great in my book (yes, I finally played FF6 as well).

Such clarity of mind deserves a promotion, but alas I do not possess the p0werz. As for the rest of your post, I agree I mean, for me personally, I don't really care enough about the original to think they could destroy it unless what they do is really, really bad or really, really dumb (or both), but FFVII is held in such a high regard that it's going to be pretty damn impossible for them to avoid the shitstorm of fury they are going to have to deal with once the game is released.

You fools. Final Fantasy 9 is vastly superior to any other game ever created by human hand.

I actually also really loved 12. I need to replay that sometime. But yeah, the opinions of FF games usually vary radically, which is something I really like about the series. One good thing I guess is that the fans can generally agree that FFVII and FFX were the series highs, although IMO the consensus has formed around the wrong one being better IMO I never played it in 1997 like most people did, I never really got into FF until ~2006/2007 so I don't really have the nostalgia glasses clouding my judgement.

I agree that the perfect story is the game's main quality. I mean, seriously, that story has so many layers and depth to it that it still blows my mind. But I have to say that, to me at least, it's not the only thing that keeps the game together. I really, really enjoyed the gameplay as well. See, my main problems with Square Enix today are not the stories or the presentation, but the battle systems they implement in their games. I need traditional turn-based/ATB systems. And I want to control ALL my characters, thank you very much.

But I also think that traditional battle systems don't really fit with today's style of gaming Today calls for a fast pace, so maybe some kind of mixture between 12's real time and X-2's battle system would be perfect?

The XIII system was horrid tho. Like what even the fuck was that. I really liked XIII when it came out, but I'm 99% sure that that was 99% just "OMFG NEW FF LOOK AT HOW SHINY IT IS" and like 1% my love for Vanille, but in hindsight it was awwwwwwful. XIII-2 was also ridiculous (TIME TRAVEL ARE YOU SERIOUS) and then Lightning Returns was just.... indescribable. I am SO mad at them for wasting so much time on those two pointless and stupid and unnecessary sequels. I really like bittersweet endings and XIII was absolutely that (FANGXVANILLE5EVA OK) and then the sequels just... urgh.

I haven't played 1-5 and I just ignore the ones that came after 10.

The battle system in X-2 is incredible, it's easily my favourite battle system in all the Final Fantasies. It feels dynamic, because all the characters and enemies can move and attack simultaneously, but it's still very much traditional ATB. I absolutely love the gameplay in X-2 - as well as all the rest of the game, honestly, I never understood why that game gets so much hate. Okay, the main characters being extremely girly is not for everyone, I understand that, but the actual plot of X-2 was pretty great, imo. The love story between Lenne and Shuyin moved me to tears and the Crimson Squad stuff was freaking dark and disturbing. I even liked Leblanc and thought that Brother was funny ...

The gameplay is so much fun and the battle system is perfect. But the game itself was just... dumb? The Lenne/Shuyin stuff was great, as was the Aeon's turning evil (again), but I never really bought the world as a natural follow on from X. And the disgusting lack of respect approx. everyone had for Yuna, the woman who SAVED THE WORLD, was so so so so so so annoying.

god you two should just get a room Aww, no but seriously, FF10 is a perfect game. For me 7, 9 and 10 are all perfect games that I absolutely love and have played countless times. I just love 7 and 9 a little bit more. Yeah, I'm with you there. But I also think that traditional battle systems don't really fit with today's style of gaming Today calls for a fast pace, so maybe some kind of mixture between 12's real time and X-2's battle system would be perfect? I'm a 100% with you on everything you said about X-2's gameplay, but my god, the story was awful, I'm sorry. Everything that was perfect about FFX's story, just went down the drain in X-2, IMO.

FFXIII wasn't a good game, imo, but the ending was fucking perfect. When I finished it I was like, okay, well, you know what, the game kinda sucked, but that beautiful ending did kinda make up for all that. I didn't care at all for any of the characters, but when I saw Fang and Vanille trapped inside that crystal for eternity, there were fucking tears running down my face. And then of course XIII-2 came along, introduced nonsensical time travel bullshit and literally erases XIII's beautiful ending from existence. I don't know whose idea that was, but I hope that person got fired ...

I don't know whose idea that was, but I hope that person got fired ... ikr. I mean, it was years ago so I don't remember but I probably cried. It was magnificent. Then XIII-2 happened. I don't even know what the fuck to say about that anymore. I also like sad endings, so Serah dying suddenly in a "we should have seen this coming" kind of way is normally the kind of thing I would love, but after all the fucking bullshit that came before it all I could really think about was how enraged I was that the cliffhanger meant another fucking game. Lightning is also such a dull protagonist. Like, she is basically just a female Cloud, and Cloud was dull (sorry to his fans). Another forum I visit occasionally had someone talking about how much they wanted Lightning to appear in FFXV and I almost exloded. what the fucking fuck. no. she should not. she should stay the fuck away from the rest of the franchise outwith the crossover crap like Dissidia.
