#1 made me think of this forum Now I want to reread the books. And I am going to see FB tonight. I enjoyed the first and want to see how this one plays out despite my reservations. i will never forget my childish wonder at seeing Philosopher’s Stone at the cinema as a child. McGonogal turning from cat to woman, the magic, the owls, quidditch, really just utterly charmed me

I'd forgotten about a lot of those. I really need to reread the books. Any time I've tried in the past few months, I never have the time to stick with it. I'll probably try to make some progress over Christmas.

Back from Crimes of Grindelwald. Won't go into spoilers but overall it was ok, not as good as Fantastic Beasts. Non-spoiler point. The Good: Very cinematic. Absolutely gorgeous sets, creatures, camera work. Fantastic music. The whole thing looks exquisite. The opening scene in particular is brilliant. The world building. I mentioned in my last post how charmed I was by philosophers stone. Well this instalment of Wizarding World explores more of the wizarding world and brings on that sense of wonder and "I want to be a wizard" again. Acting. Good performances all around. What I especially like is how characters where we see their older selves or descendants are so believable as younger versions. Some of Jude Law's mannerisms really evoke older Dumbledore, Lita Lestrange you could see as an ancestor of Bellatrix (once someone else has seen the film I will discuss this more in spoiler tags). Young Newt was fantastic though. I mean I thought it was Eddie Redmayne playing him at first, great job. And despite my reservations, Johnny Depp was actually pretty good. He was very menacing as Grindelwald, yet very charismatic too, in the sense that you could easily see how he managed to build up an army of followers. There is one scene in particular, a rally, which is kind of horrifying because...well that's again for spoiler discussions.
The bad: Too damn crowded. The film just has far too much going on, too large a cast to really give the focus needed to any single plot line. And the whole film suffers as a result, coming to a bit of a weak ass rushed ending. The characters also suffer as a result, with many newbies having little to no development, such that I couldn't even tell you what most of them were called. This is especially the case with the characters around Grindelwald Lazy writing and plotting at times. This is a feature in so many films these days but I would love just once if the writers took greater care when it comes to characters decisions or thought of more convincing and believable ways to advance the plot The very last scene has...let's call it a reveal. I'm hoping it's a lie/deception, and tbh I think it will turn out to be. But if not AHAHAHAHA. nope.

I agree with you stoneheartsrevenge, The movie could have been called "Fantastic Beast: The Set Up". The focus of the film is to stablish things for future installments, so we get lots of exposition and threads that have no connection until the last few minutes of the movie, and there is no pay-off. The script is all over the place, literally. There are so many characters and plots no one gets enough screen time to be properly developed, the new characters are not very memorable and when you think about it, most of them could have been cut out of the film entirely and the story would remain the same(and would probably have been better because it would have given more time for the main characters). And the fantastical beast felt like they were added because the movies are called Fantastical Beast, unlike the first movie, which found a way to make them a part of the plot. Tina and Credence are criminally underused, Queenie and Jacob should habe gotten way more screen time to make what happens plausible, and I'm honestly wondering why they made Newt the main character of the whole series when it's clear that the heart of the story is in the relationship between two different characters. And I'm 99.9% sure the final twist is a red herring, is the only thing that makes any sense. It's still an enjoyable film, but nowhere as fun and entertaining as the first one. It's worth a watch for the visuals, the score and the acting, but that's it. I think Yates should give someone new a chance to direct the movies so we can get a new style, and I think is a good idea to let JKR write the main story, but once she's done a good scriptwriter should be in charge of turning that story into a movie, because this film felt more like a novel with all the twist, characters and backstory.

Mostly agree, except I would keep Yates onas I think he’s really found his stride with these movies and done some terrific work. Seems a shame to take that away

wizards used to shit on the floor Has someone been on the grape juice? No, I don't drink alcohol. I was just thinking about the crazy stuff JK Rowling has been tweeting recently. I could have sworn she tweeted saying that wizards shat on the floor and zapped it away before toilets were invented.
