Half-Blood Prince is a weird book for me. It has many of my absolute favourite moments in the entire series, namely all the scenes between Harry and Dumbledore, and the flashbacks to Voldemort's youth. But it also has the most forgettable, uneventful main Hogwarts storyline of all the books, and waaaay too much cringy love stuff. Also, I do not like the Harry / Ginny romance. There, I said it. I think Ginny (in the books) is an awesome character in her own right, but it just doesn't work for me at all.
I still love to re-read Half-Blood Prince, because the stuff that does work is brilliant, and I love the ending so much.

I think Ginny (in the books) is an awesome character in her own right, but it just doesn't work for me at all. I still love to re-read Half-Blood Prince, because the stuff that does work is brilliant, and I love the ending so much. Oh yeah, it's absolutely the teenage hormone angst stuff that makes HBP not work for me. It's so cringe and not well written at all, imo. I like the Dumbledore/Harry stuff and Voldemort's history though. And Dumbledore's death is so well done, with the darkness and confusion, the flying bodies, the desperate flight through Hogwarts, and Hagrid's rage and despair when he realises the truth and sees Dumbledore at the bottom of the tower. Of course, the film horribly mangles everything by upping the focus on teenage hormonal angst and totally forgetting that Voldemort has a past (he has a mother? Say it ain't so?!). And the ending is a whole heap of nothingsauce. Draco' plan culminates in a few Death Eaters smashing windows and little else. No tension, no emotion, nothing. and I just reread the Ginny discussion on the last page too I don't think it's awful or anything but I wasn't crazy about it. Since I was rereading the older posts, I will weigh in on Ron and Hermione. I think both are very different characters in the movies to the books, though as others have said, Ron in particular is given awful treatment on screen. Both are great characters in the books, each in their own way. I love the S.P.E.W stuff, both Hermione's passion for it and Ron's hilarious reactions to her efforts. On a related note, they really should have included more of the House Elf stuff in the movies, preferably from Goblet of Fire but at the very least from Order of the Phoenix. I seem to recall something about Kreacher originally not being included in the OotP film, but because of his later role he was given a brief appearance. As the movies stand, Dobby and Kreacher's roles in Deathly Halloween is devoid of any real emotional impact for me. Whereas it is great stuff in the books. And I partially agree with JK Rowling on Ron and Hermione. I think they definitely would have a relationship, and potentially marry, but I do t think it would last. However, I would not have Harry and Hermione together instead.

I thought I had read something to that effect. Not that they really included him all that much. Pretty sure he only has a brief appearance when Harry arrives at Grimmauld Place (omg, Grim Old Place How have I never noticed?) until he appears again in Deathly Hallows. Might as well not have bothered, they removed anything meaningful about the character. Would also have liked to have seen the "Elf Tails" stuff from Half Blood Prince, because it would have given Dobby more screen time and thus made his death in DH more meaningful/emotional. I don't think from the films alone there is any true sense of loss is earned for that scene because we haven't seen or heard of Dobby or any house elf since Chamber of Secrets. I'm getting angry at the films all over again

I really wanted to like this, but I can't get over the cheesy acting and dialogue.

Look at this tidbit of foreshadowing from Chamber of Secrets:
Never noticed this before, but it's so clear: it wasn't actually Harry who felt this strange sense of familiarity when he read the name Tom Riddle, it was the piece of Voldemort's soul that was living inside of him.
It's kind of funny that there were all these crazy theories about Harry and Voldemort before Deathly Hallows came out, but it's so obvious in retrospect that Harry was a horcrux all along. Dumbledore literally spells it out for us in the second book.

I always hear that the stage performance is actually really good even though the story seems pretty bad when you read it. I'm guessing there must be something in the execution that makes it so much better than the screenplay suggests it would be. Hope you have a good time lordcarson!

I've heard the same. Iirc the stage production won loads of awards when it came out too. A friend of mine works in theatre and she's said it can be a shitty script but still end up as a brilliant production, if the cas and crew are good and know what they are about
