I mean there's a possibility we might, but I'll probably be in my mid 30's. Well TWOW is probably end of this year/start of next year. I'd say ADOS in another 4-6 years. mid-30's is a bit of an exaggeration. I wish I shared your optimism. (I do love your avatar though!) To me, his post around New Year's Day sealed it for me. Hundreds of pages. Dozens of chapters.
What the f...That does not sound good.My hunch is he's probably closer to the starting point than he is finishing. TWOW is supposed to be 1500 pages.
During that blog, he even gave us the insight that he worked on a Theon chapter a "couple of days" ago. This doesn't sound like he's actively working on the book to me. Every few days on his blog, he writes long winded summaries about football, hugos, Wild Cards and how tired and old he's become. And quite frankly, I believe this is a snowball effect. The more that time goes on, the less he's likely to want to write. Watching the show unfold with his broad stroke outlines is much easier, frankly. Jon's parentage, his fate from FTW and the Tower of Joy are a huge part of the climax of his story. We're going to get some huge answers starting in April and unfortunately too many people just want to give him a pass on this. I think it's very likely we'll only see one version of A Dream of Spring. 2018 @hboUnfortunately, we might only get one version of TWOW as well.

Obviously he still has a lot to write. And maybe make changes. As he then has to write ADOS and the storylines have to make sense. I'm not that worried about it, it will be done when its done. He's already fucked up as much as possible. We already know jons parentage i am not really waiting for that.

I really don't give a shit about Jon's parentage. I don't think he'll regocnize Rhaegar as his father anyway.
TWoW will be published. Saying that is not being optimistic. I have my doubts about ADoS, but that might be published as well.

He was being sarcastic. If HBO keeps having new shows , like Vinyl, crash and burn, or Westworld which seems to be in chaos. I know Vinyl has been renewed but it's still in the basement. This year could be crucial for HBO and GoT , if it trumps , in a big way, everything HBO has I could see HBO adding 2 more seasons. Not sure D&D would agree to this, unless they make them an offer they can not refuse. They could hand the production to Bryan Cogman and Dave Hill and/or someone else. George would stay on as a co producer. I mean HBO is really getting squeezed by others , like Amazon and Netflicks , others, original streaming and they don't have another jewel in their crown like GoT. There is a possibility of a movie, not kidding here, tho that would have be the Warner in Time-Warner, and D&D are open to that , how that would work is mysterious. It is something George wants, and I could really see him writing the screenplay. This is Time-Warner business which may trump HBO's model!

I wonder if all this controversy might make him decide to wait and finish his series after the TV show is done. I might be tempted to do the same if I had to deal with all this. I do think we'll get Winds, but it will probably be a couple years, _at least_. I don't dare guess about ADoS. I just hope he changes his mind back and titles it A Time for Wolves.

Truthfully, I don't think it's controversy that's causing him to delay. I think it's more that he's distracted and now thanks to the show's success - he's very wealthy and can do more of things he enjoys (like run a theater, edit Wild Cards, write his blog, etc) than actually write ASOIAF. I know D&D said "we won't be spoiled", but GRRM confirmed a couple of weeks ago "There will be spoilers". Starting with season 6, I think the books and the show will have very different paths to mostly the same "bittersweet end". We won't get copied/crossover dialogue anymore from the unfinished novels. But major arcs will be spoiled starting with Jon and Daenerys. I thought it was likely we would get TWOW but since his New Year's Day blog, but I'm pretty worried. I think our next update comes 1-1-2017 and then we'll have some sort of idea if the book is coming or not, ever. I have been known to throw some crackpot theories out there and here is another: How twisted would it be if we get an adapted version of S6-S8 Game of Thrones to create TWOW and ADOS by some other author? Obviously they would have to tie up some loose ends to make the TV shows match the books, but I think that's more of a possibility now than ever before. There are good writers than can finish the series and they'll have the show and GRRM notes as a blueprint. I want GRRM to finish it, but I don't know if he does.

Honestly, I'm not even thinking in TWoW at this moment. I'm completely focused on the show until the season is over. But yeah, I guess that GRRM talking about more Wild Cards is not very encouraging.

Yeah, I lost all the hype for TWOW and I think it's for the best. Waiting one year for the next season for the show is already unbearable, we can't afford to wait as "hypely" for the books in the same manner. When we get an official announcement I can hype again, but it's hard to get hype when GRRM himself doesn't seem to be very interested in ASOIAF anymore.

Not really familiar with copyright and such, but I think GRRM's estate would retain the rights to the series in the event of his death. And given his wishes that no one else finishes this for him there would likely be some legal obligation in his will preventing the rights from being sold. IMO anyway

If George died before finishing the series and someone else took it as his job to write the books, I wouldn't read them.
I still think TWoW will come out next year, ADoS in 2020's if ever.

Like I said I'm not an expert, but if he was to explicitly say so in his will I don't think the executors can go against those orders, regardless of how much they are offered.
