He's not almost done. If he were almost done he wouldn't have posted an update. He posted an update because he realized he can't deliver a book for the foreseeable future.

Or maybe he's finished both books and he's waiting to give us a surprise super-duper double release the in April, causing the season 6 premiere to be pushed back indefinitely.

He thought it was reasonable he could finish TWOW in four and a half months back in August.
Even he knows he couldn't write more than 400 pages in four months, so by now he's probably 6/7ths+ of the way done, most of the book, but not the final ten chapters or so and lengthy polish.
But now that there is no more deadline, the release will likely be sluggish. He could have it finished in three, four months, which would give him DOUBLE the time he thought he would need to complete it, but who knows at this point. It could really hit a snag without a motivational deadline.

I think if we're lucky we'll have it by the end of the year (please make it before I leave for Shanghai, much easier to purchase that way). I'm not one to blame GRRM for the writing pace, but I must admit I'm really dying to read the damn books, especially since I can't bring myself to enjoy the show anymore.

GRRM was so confident he would get ADWD out one year after AFFC that he put it in the book. It took six years. GRRM said the next book is months away IF the writing goes well. We have no reason that it will go well. Let's be generous and say he thinks he can get it done in three months. Three months multiplied by six is eighteen months. The earliest TWOW comes out is mid 2017. Based on his blog post, I am certainly not expecting it this year.

I figured if D&D actually had a decent chunk of TWOW available (not broad stroke outline), my question below would have given us some clue on his overall progress. He didn't answer the question, YET. Probably won't. Mar. 10th, 2016 01:29 pm (UTC) Outlines Might be a strange question, but it's the right thread for it. In the show we have had scenes that contained nearly the exact dialogue from the books. Personally, these are some of favorite moments. Do you think we'll get any more of those "dialogue-copy" scenes in Season 6 from TWOW?

It's a sad thought that I'll probably be in my mid 20's when ADoS gets published, if ever.
It's inevitable that TWoW will be published in next few years.

George RR Martin suffers from the worst case of writers block I've ever seen, and I'm a chronic procrastinator. Work George, Work!

Well GRRM is on the clock again.
D&D is working on their last 10-15 episodes right now. GRRM has been adamant that he's working on Winds more than normal IMO on his blog.
If we get TWOW by May 2017, he'll be writing an episode in Season 7 Part II.

I don't know why but I have a feeling he will never write another GoT episode ever again. I hope I'm wrong.

I still think we won't see TWOW before 2018. And that will be his last book.

How crazy must it be to type away in your weird hat while HBO is airing the shit out of your secrets? I'd be like "okay, fuck ya'll. I'm going to KFC for their spicy shit then to my weed dealer and ya'll can wonder what the fuck actually happens in Dorne. Peace"

I think TWoW will be published before Season 7 starts. ADoS will take other 5-6 years.

He released a chapter he's read years ago. He acknowledges the book is haunting him "monkey", which we already knew. I'm holding out hope we get it before Season 7 Part II starts script writing, because I want more than his outline feedback on the show's ending.

I think GRRM is really trying to finish TWOW before season 7 so he can publish another book while he can use the GOT hype to promote it.
