I don't blame you guys for watching. But I have very strict anti-piracy rules for myself, I won't pirate media because I am an avid collector of movies and shows, and I know piracy has really hurt the physical media industry over the past decade. I buy blurays because they look so much better on my home theater, and I subscribe to HBO pretty much for GoT alone, so I am happy to wait until Sunday when I can watch 7x04 in the highest possible quality. With as long as we've been waiting for George to write these books, a new episode every 7 days aint nothing to me. But I'm just messing with you guys, I don't blame you for watching, and Bec has a good point for those who don't live in the States, these episodes are released at really inconvenient times for you. I'm spoiled getting to watch new episodes at 9pm on Sundays in my time zone. It's not just that, it's incredibly expensive to get HBO in Australia, and there aren't as many options.

I understand both sides, while is true that piracy has hurt the tv and film industry a lot, in some cases piracy is the best option if you want to watch something. Netflix arrived to Spain just a year ago, HBO launched this Spring, and for years the big companies refused to have streaming services, so we only had small companies with terrible catalogues. If you wanted to watch a foreign tv show or a non-mainstream movie you had two options, download it and watch it or pay a lot to watch it on demand, and only if your cable provider had it. If you had cable, which is quite expensinve here

My policy on piracy is that I only pirate shows I will ultimately end up paying for, e.g I will legally watch Game of Thrones again tonight through a service I pay for, and for Fear the Walking Dead I pay for Amazon Prime and will eventually rewatch it there.

I do that too, but only because I can now. For years I had to pirate almost everything, hell, sometimes we had to watch a movie for class and if we asked where we could watch it the answer would be "torrent it"

Not sure if I'd have the same mentality if they were grossly overpriced.

Just make sure you guys use a VPN if you're going to pirate stuff. As a very wise teacher of mine one said, if the police tried to go after everyone who downloads tv show and movies, they couldn't do anything else. Here they don't go after people who download, they go after the sites that offer the links and only if they are hosted inside the country, if not, they can't do shit about it.

It's not practical now, no, but they are definitely tracking what everybody downloads in case it some day becomes practical. The fact that net neutrality is in jeopardy definitely makes me paranoid about privacy and freedom on the internet. In a bad case scenario your ISP could hold your internet access hostage and retroactively charge you for previously downloaded content. Just because you can get away with piracy today doesn't mean that will always be the case, which is why it's better to not leave a digital footprint of illegal activity.

Technically it's theft of copyrighted material.

But Europe still has internet neutrality, they tried to pass a law to change it but the backlash was so huge they stopped, and the person attached to an IP adress is known only by the internet provider, which here can only reveal said identity if there is a very serious crime involved. Nowadays they only do it if a judge orders it, and they only order it when there is childhood pornography involved.
I'm not naive, I know this can change, but the pure amount of data and burocracy they would have to comb through just to find out my internet activity is too much to be something to worry about.

I'm not sure what the laws in Europe are like, but the American prison industry is for profit, so it is booming. Americans get 30 year sentences for marijuana possession thanks to the three strike rule. The government could make a shit ton of money by fining people who downloaded content illegally, so I feel like it's just a matter of time before they figure out how to do it. The drug war is one of our nation's most profitable ventures and it only started in the 80s. I can definitely see a digital war against piracy as the evolution of that type of Justice for profits. Look up civil forfeiture cases in America if you want to feel outrage. Your property becomes the Government's property before you've even been convicted of a crime. Our attorney general wants to push for maximum sentences in all criminal cases. American privacy and freedom has eroded since 9/11 The policies are all ready in place, all the government has to do is decide to go after us.
Our Net Neutrality seemed secure... until we got a new FCC chairman who has been bought by big Cable. Now it's very much in danger of being repealed. Iknow it might sound paranoid, but nobody believed the NSA was spying on American citizens until the truth came out. The writing's on the wall and all security experts agree that you should use a VPN if you're downloading content. It's true that governments aren't quite ready to tackle piracy on an end user level, but they're damn sure trying to figure it out. Until they do they're just leaving money on the table.
