Hunchback of Notre Damme is a really good Disney film. And has one of the best villain songs they've ever done (I love the whole soundtrack but Hellfire is something special):

Hunchback is kind of a mess. It has no idea what it wants to be, I feel like it suffers a lot from the disney-fication of the source material. It has an incredible villain and an epic score, but also some of the worst and most annoying comic relief in form of the Gargoyles, and overall pretty bland characters. I still like it, because of unforgettable scenes like Hellfire, but overall, it's not one of my favourites.
There is a stage musical that is loosely based on the Disney movie, but is actually much closer to the book, it doesn't have all the unnecessary comic relief. It has the same score as the movie, though.
I do not like Pocahontas as a movie, but the soundtrack was phenomenal. Colours of the Wind and Just Around The Riverbend are some of my favourite Disney songs.

I never said anything about gritty. However I think evidence is all ready pointing to something of a departure from their previous live-action adaptations. You all ready said that it sounds like they're changing the plot from the original movie. I wouldn't be surprised that Disney is much more interested in appealing to the Chinese market this time around, something Hollywood is relying on more and more. The Chinese movie theater earnings are on the rise, while (thanks to home video and streaming) they are declining in America. Many big budget Hollywood films of recent years(including Pacific Rim, Warcraft) only made a profit thanks to late returns in the Chinese market. Disney is all ready ahead of the curve by having producers make an alternate version of Iron Man 3 for Chinese audiences, featuring a subplot with Chinese star Bingbing Fan. Let's face it, Mulan is one of the least popular Disney musicals, and Chinese audiences are more likely to be familiar with the Mulan character from their own history and pop culture. The fact that they're dropping the songs all ready indicate that they're attempting to distance this movie from the 90s musical. Additionally, if they're looking for actors fluent in Mandarin that implies that there will be Mandarin speaking in the movie, which is huge for a big budget Hollywood film and another indication that they're attempting to appeal to the Chinese market. In the Sui Tang Romance, Mulan's story is tragic similar to Romeo and Juliet. Mulan returns from her adventures years later to reunite with her father only to find out that he has died and her mother has remarried. To avoid being sent off to be a foreign ruler's concubine, she commits suicide after sending her sister to deliver a message to her true love. A rousing musical might seem insincere in tone for Chinese audiences, so maybe Disney is attempting to emulate something akin to the wildly successful Baz Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet that has a bittersweet, romantic tone. The American audience will be interested riding off of the success of Beauty and the Beast, but instead of copying the old formula, and trying something outside of the box, they could have a huge international hit on their hands. Of course that's just my speculation, but I'm kind of intrigued. I think the movie you're proposing sounds interesting, but it's something that has to be done by another company than Disney, and certainly not under the guise of a remake of a beloved animated musical. I don't think Mulan is one of the least favourite Disney musicals at all. It's not Beauty and the Beast or The Little Mermaid, but compared to movies like Pocahontas or Hunchback, Mulan is fondly remembered as one of the better movies made during the Disney Renaissance. The soundtrack especially is revered by so many, which is why I find it super disappointing that they're doing a remake but leaving out all the songs. You're a bigger Disney expert than I am, but I was born in 85, so I was just the right age for the Disney movies of the 90s. The Lion King was one of the most hyped movies when I was a child, and I fondly remember my day care taking us to see twice. My female friends are still big Disney fanatics, and this is just personal conjecture, but I never hear them mentioning Mulan. A great way to determine the impact of a movie in pop culture is when people make a lot of memes about it. Where are the Mulan memes? Meanwhile I see variations of stuff like this on facebook on a regular basis: This of course doesn't speak to the quality of the film, just that it didn't resonate with the little white girls I grew up with as much as the other Disney films of the 90s. That's why I think Disney is trying to cater more to the Chinese market with this film, and they tend to view Mulan as a tragic character. Of course they are likely to play it safe to appeal to the biggest audience possible, but Disney is one company that can afford to take a bigger risk for a potentially bigger payoff. I can't stress how important the Chinese market has become for Hollywood moneymaking. Suicide Squad took a big hit because it couldn't get approved by Chinese certification boards(due to promoting supernatural elements). I'm still trying to wrap my head around the possibility of Mandarin dialogue, which is a huge gamble for an American film, unless they are perhaps trying to make two different versions for American and Chinese audiences. Again, the precedent is there with Disney and Iron Man 3.

I love The Little Mermaid. Correction: I loved the Little Mermaid until I saw this, which ruined it for me. I feel like Ariel often gets a bad rap. I mean, sure, she did sell her voice for legs, but it was her father who basically forced her into doing something stupid like that, by being an all around horrible father to her, who would yell at her and break her possessions instead of listening to his daughter. Ariel made a mistake, but she was tricked by Ursula, who was much older and smarter than her and exploited her moment of weakness. Also, it's not like she wanted legs just because she fell in love with Prince Eric. She wanted to become human before she even met him, her song, "Part of Your World" is about her feeling trapped and dreaming of a new life, new experiences and knowledge. I love Ariel.

That was my original interpretation when I saw it. I mean, I wasn't analyzing it. I was just watching it with my best friend and being embarrassed because we were too old for Disney movies. But that was the message I felt like I received. I may have also received the message that the grass is always greener on the other side...

But that was the message I felt like I received. I may have also received the message that the grass is always greener on the other side...That's certainly part of it, too. I just don't like the argument that Ariel is a horrible character because she sold her soul for a vag. That's a shallow and frankly wrong interpretation of the movie, in my opinion. Sorry, if I'm being too much of a dick right now, but you can't imagine how much The Little Mermaid means to me. I love the movie and the character from the depth of my heart. Here is me trying to adress every single point made in that video. 1) Ariel's best feature is not her voice. We are told in the movie that she has a beautiful singing voice, but that's not a big deal to her or anyone. Ariel's best feature, in my opinion, is her curiosity and her thirst for new experiences and knowledge. 2) She did not sell her voice for a plastic surgery because she was vain and wanted to be more beautiful, she sold her voice because she was pushed by her father and because it was the only way for her to fulfill her dream. 3) Ariel doesn't control her small friends ever. 4) Ariel's father loves her, but he treats her like she's five years old. He doesn't take her, her wishes or problems seriously, he yells at her and he breaks her stuff. He is not a good father. 5) To us, it's junk. To Ariel, those are artifacts from a world she so desperately wants to belong to. 6) She never steals anything from anyone. 7) She can't talk to him because Ursula's spell turns her into a mute. The movie never portrays this as a good thing either, it's made pretty clear that Ariel made a huge mistake trusting the evil sea witch, and she is not rewarded for it. 8) She uses "baby talk", because she is a mermaid, and she doesn't know what human objects are called. 9) Okay, yes, she fell in love with a stranger. I've fallen in love with strangers, too. She didn't change for him, she changed because being part of the human world has been her life long dream. 10) It's got nothing to do with the way she looks, she wants leg because she wants to be able to walk on land.

You are so deep. You know what got me about that movie? I liked a boy I was friends with, and I wanted him to kiss me, which it kept seeming like he was gonna do, but he kept not doing. And this song is in the movie...you know what's coming. My friend wanted to invite him over and watch this movie with him, but I refused that on several grounds.

speaking of underrated Disney movies, anyone remember this masterpiece? Funny, YouTube recommended me "A llama? He's supposed to be dead!"" Clip a few days ago The film wasn't great but parts of it were hilarious and Yzma was great comedy value I think the movie you're proposing sounds interesting, but it's something that has to be done by another company than Disney, and certainly not under the guise of a remake of a beloved animated musical. I'm 10 years younger and going through school and college whenever Disney came up (which was surprisingly often) Mulan was more often than not cited as a favourite. I guess with it coming at the end of the 90s it was still pretty new and relevant when we hit an age to watch it. Not sure whether to read too much into the Mandarin requirement. It could be something, or it could just be brief scenes. I didn't actually know that about Iron Man 3, it's interesting and casts some questions on this film I agree
