I must confess that I liked Rogue One a lot better than The Force Awakens. The latter left me feeling a little bit underwhelmed overall, whereas Rogue One really managed to reach me on an emotional level, like no other Star Wars movie, save A New Hope, ever has. The themes of Rogue One were extremely powerful to me. The depiction of the rebel's desperate struggle against the overwhelming power of the Empire ... and at the end, a ray of hope. That last scene with Princess Leia had me in tears. I think both movies succeeded in different areas. The Force Awakens was basically a retread but the new characters were all really likable and intriguing, overall the movie was quite entertaining. Rogue One had a great story, but the characterization all fell flat. If you could somehow combine the two films you'd have the perfect Star Wars movie.

Can't see how you can watch the film and come away saying it played it safe. I can see why some wouldn't like it but I absolutely dont think they played safe. in a way it mashes up some of the beats of Empire and Return of the Jedi yet manages to twist them at the same time. The throne room showdown is obviously a ROTJ nod and the final battle almost has to be an intentional throwback to Hoth considering the "salt" line. But overall I think it was more out there and took risky decisions, especially with Luke's character. Having him try and kill his own nephew was pretty ballsy and no doubt will have pissed of some fans (and also makes Hamill's comments make sense). I think the decision to make "who is Smoke?" And "Who are Rey's parents?" into red herrings was also quite daring and i rather liked it. Totally went against what I was expecting from the film. My overall opinion on a first viewing is positive, though I will have to watch it again because I think there is a lot to take in with the film. The ending in particular was something I really liked, as it really ties back to the whole 'spark' of the rebellion message. I will be very intrigued to see where the next film goes because they pretty much wiped the Resistance slate clean. While I mentioned liking the fact snoke's identity was a red herring, I would like to have known more about him and where he comes from and how the hell he knows so much about the force in any case. And yes there are some absolutely beautiful Leia moments that make this a fitting last movie for Fisher to have filmed. I was a bit teary at times tbh not going to lie

You know what ... I take it back. Which one is better? I don't know, but The Force Awakens is really fucking brilliant too. I'm not even sure why I liked it so much more now than I did the first time I saw it two years ago, perhaps it's because of Carrie Fisher's passing which makes the whole experience so much more emotional, but I loved every second of it.
I'm a sucker for the Force Theme. I tear up every single time they play it, even if it's just a little snippet. Wish I was exaggerating, but I'm not. My eyes are red right now, it's like I've been crying for two hours straight (which is not that far from the truth). What is it about Star Wars that makes me so damn emotional? It's just really powerful stuff, man.
Now I'm really looking forward to The Last Jedi.

Oh my god that back and forth of "oh I just watched this one and now I like it more than I did before!" is EXACTLY what I do every time I watch them. I'm so bad at ranking these movies. At the moment, I've got a top 3 (before today it was only 2!) and bottom 2, but the other four are pretty much up in the air and will change depending on how I'm feeling on that day Your second paragraph... fucking hell just watch this asap. There's so much I want to type but I have to hold it in til Monday

There's so much I want to type but I have to hold it in til Monday I know exactly which scene you mean I actual year thought they had decided to change things after she died irl to cut her out of the next film, and so she was actually going to be Killeen off there. But then her theme swelled and she’s used the force and omg I think I came. The final scene with her and Luke “I know what you’re going to say...I changed my hair” R2 replaying her ANH message was beautiful. To discuss some other stuff...I really loved Finn and Rose, the pair had awesome chemistry. Still firmly a Finn-Poe shipper but Rose is suchlike an awesome lovable character. The actress seems familiar but I don’t know why. The casino stuff...eh. I think it was poorly slotted in, but that was because of the decision to have the whole film as one long protracted chase scene. Having Finn and Rose have the time to take a detour to this casino planet hadn’t the consequence of 1) making the galaxy feel very small (18 hours of fuel my arse) and 2) made not a lot of sense narratively. Holdo really didn’t have a good reason not to share her plans with the rest of the Resistance. If she had then Finn and Rose would never have left and brought back some scoundrel to double cross them and allow the majority of the Resistance fleet to be destroyed. That part felt particularly forced. Though the visually stunning casino stuff was almost worth it. And as mentioned the payoff at the end was something I really loved. My absolute favourite visual was Holdo jumping to hyperspace and shattering Snoke’s ship. Holy fucking hell that was such a gorgeous shot. Also I’m going to have to eat crow and say Porgs are the fucking shit man, I absolutely adored them.

OH and also I got stopped by staff on the way out of the cinema and had to show them my phone because they thought I had taken a picture of the screen or something The people behind me had been, which the staff knew, but they also saw me get my ph9ne out after the movie too (I was switching it back on). So that was that

Also I’m going to have to eat crow and say Porgs are the fucking shit man, I absolutely adored them. I'm still not sure how I feel about the whole "Leia uses the Force to pull herself back". On the one hand, I adore the idea of Leia tapping into her Force powers without being a full-on Jedi. On the other hand, I think it looked a little goofy. But the fucking music... oh man. I feel like, with the criticisms both TFA and R1 had for how they used "fan service", this movie handled it perfectly. Luke talking with R2 and delivering the Leia message, Luke reuniting with Leia, Luke talking to FUCKING PUPPET YODA. Fuck yes! And those already-gorgeous moments were accentuated with the music. Yoda's theme and the Han/Leia music came in at the perfect times and made me a little teary-eyed. As for Holdo's plan, I think it's moreso because Poe is a hotshot - his brazen plan got more than half their fighters destroyed. I can see why she'd not trust him with all the details. And even if she did tell him, I feel like he wouldn't have taken it well and gone off to do his own thing anyway. That's just the way his character is. Plus when he does find out and blabs to Finn, that's how Benicio finds out in the first place. Also Laura Dern looks gorgeous I totally agree with you about the visuals: I thought Rogue One looked great, but everything in this was absolutely stunning. Just when you think two Star Destroyers crashing into each other in slo-mo doesn't look incredible, in comes Holdo. Also can confirm: porgs are great.

This was also probably the best acting we’ve had from a SW film. The entire cast was great, but particular standouts were Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley. They fucking killed every scene they had. Gleeson as Hux was hysterical in his OTT fanatasicsm and constant stooge status to first Snoke and then Kylo. The opening scene with Poe taunting him was corny/hammy but i’ll allow it because it made me laugh. Phasma was a total waste. Should have just left her as dead after VII to be honest. Benico del Toro was awesome. I hope they have him back. Need a Maz spin off. Like, yesterday

I really liked it. It definitely had some issues but my favorite parts were Rey and Kylo's story and Luke and Leia seeing each other again. I wasn't crazy about Finn or Poe's stories, especially when you think about how their plans got about 75% of their forces killed, but the stuff with the others was so good it elevated it.

So... knowing the obvious, does Reylo make anyone else super uncomfortable? I mean... The emo, incest love story. I'm pretty sure there has to be a song for that. And I'm betting it fits perfectly.

incest love story? Oh no, you believe they are siblings? or at best cousins...I think it will take a lot of bullshit explanation in IX to pull that off since neither Han, Leila or Luke ever once acknowledge Rey as their child or niece. I don’t think she and Ben are related, and I hope Abrams sticks with RJ’s ‘they were noone’ Idea. As for the connection between them, I’m not sure I would call it romantic attraction. There is obviously something between them, but what is it? Fascination certainly. A sense of kinship because of their similarities. A desire for acceptance...and perhaps some sexual tension between them yes. The Rey and Ben stuff was probably among my favourite parts of the film though so I’m totally on board for more in IX
