This was a solid episode (ep. 4) in the drama dept (not so much horror side of it) and had a really dark feel to it. I loved the music they chose played over the creepiest moments, like when Madison snuck out and took a tour around the outside - seeing all those missing posters up on the fence, the dead bodies who weren't zombies, the military on systematic search and destroy. It was intense. I loved the intro, and the ending too ... with Alicia reading Susan's letter to her husband. It's all very surreal and well done in an artistic way on top of the horror aspects which to be honest, really sets this apart from TWD. In TWD we have a classic zombie horror setting with tons of gore and fight scenes. But this show is different (at least the starting episodes, I'm sure it will change as time goes on and things get uglier). This show is more of a dystopian society breakdown kind of situation. It's pretty believable actually - right down to the asshole military commander shooting golf balls off a welcome mat outside the gate and being a prick to Travis.
Now for my dislike: Travis. I don't know why they chose to make this guy the Lori Grimes of the group but it rubs me the wrong way. We fans have already been through this trope before ... why must we suffer it again? Sure, I get it, not everyone's going to be straight up badasses from the git go and you're going to have pacifists who don't want to believe shit has gone to hell and the 'good guys' probably aren't really good guys and you want to deny there's anything wrong. While it sort of worked in an annoying way with Lori, it doesn't work with Travis. He was the smarter one and now it looks like Madison's going to end up being the stronger of the two of them. Not that I'm against the female being leader (not that there really is one in the group yet) - that's awesome! But Travis as the pacifistic overprotective dumbass is super grating for me considering how strong they painted him in the opening two episodes.
But anyways, that minor character gripe aside, I'm enjoying this new series. I really like the perspective and ominous darkness of their situation. There's a few things that don't match up like just how massive LA is and why there wouldn't be more people around in bigger camps. I don't buy that they just shot everyone out there no matter what Madison saw. Lots of people hiding like they discovered with whoever had the mirror/light morse code going on.
I'm worried for Nick. Liza better work some magic to get him back if she can't save Mrs. Salazar who is probably a goner from infection in that foot anyways. She *did* inadvertently cause Nick to get taken away for 'help' and now she's going to have to save him.

Oh and I'll add to my review: I'm also pissed that they did an 8 or 9 day time jump from the last episode and now everything outside the fences of this neighborhood 'camp' is DZ. This pisses me off because they promised to show us the breakdown of society and I expected that to mean more shots of the city in chaos. We did get some rioting and zombies last week but this week jumped forward to cleverly avoid a lot of that. Now we just saw bodies in the streets and a quiet DMZ... all the rounding up of millions of people (or killing them) must have happened off screen and it's not that believable.

I wasn't a huge fan of this episode, but I did like that it didn't have walkers in it. It was just different from what we're used to seeing. But overall, a little too slow. I hope we get to see more of that breakdown, because I was annoyed with the time jump too.
And Travis is such a whiny bitch. lol

And Travis is such a whiny bitch. lol Yeah I read a few critical reviews that there weren't any zombies at all in the episode. I found it kind of interesting too for a change. I expected to see some when Madison went out but everything was weirdly quiet. I think that was to intentionally show how fucked up the military is being shooting people who clearly were not zombies. I'm guessing they were given orders that anyone who was behaving aggressively (looters/rioters) had to be shot on sight because they don't know if that means they are 'turning' ... and this makes some sense if they still believe it's a contagious disease instead of reanimated dead people. But yeah, Travis is my main criticism, not the lack of zombies. It's somewhat more believable that we're not seeing that many at first. The breakdown of society probably had a lot more to do with the authorities mishandling the situation and rounding up everyone into these concentration camps because once you get one walker in there, it's game over.

Also, Kim Dickens. I think there's some appeal to this one for it's dystopian drama aspect more than the zombie stuff to be honest. It's the first time we've ever had a Walking Dead episode devoid of all walking dead haha. It works because they're focusing on the society/personal issues rather than the survival issues at this point. I'm sure that will change next season and they'll be more in line with the way The Walking Dead is - parallel I think is what they called it.

Sunday's episode was better than last week's. Travis and Chris are still annoying though.

Sunday's episode was better than last week's. Travis and Chris are still annoying though. Finally got time to watch this, my weekends are insane atm working so I usually watch Mon or Tue. I like this show's angle... it's very weird and different. Daniel Salazar - that man is awesome and scary... the way they tied the whole thing together. Cobalt. Wow. I knew something wrong was happening. This happened everywhere. This is why everything went to hell so fast. I was complaining we didn't get to see enough of society's collapse but this was intense and you can put the pieces together pretty well. I recommend anyone who didn't like the first 2-3 episodes to pick it back up and watch ep. 4 and 5 ... it's getting good now.

I'm really hoping something happens that doesn't cause Cobalt to fully work in the finale though, because I want to explore the fall of society more. I really liked that Striker guy (the one in the cage with Nick) He was the stand out of last week's episode.
I predict Liza dying in the finale though.

Yeah that was so bizarre and fitting for Nick's story arc. I was like "who is this crazy cat?!" I hope he ends up being some sort of unknown good guy / bad guy kind of character in the group if they make it out together.

Strand was horrible. Over the top ham and cheese. I seriously can't wait for this to end and get to TWD Season 6 next week. "And now was a hell of a time to introduce a monologuing quasi-villain like Strand (Colman Domingo) - a weird, suited "Randall Flagg" type character who can't wait to flex his immoral muscles in this new world of violence and madness. A guy who instantly felt like he existed outside of the reality of the show. Ol' pimply Tobias almost crossed this line, with his speeches/warnings about what's to come, but Strand really pushed the limits of this concept." lol. ign.com/articles/2015/09/28/fear-the-walking-dead-cobalt-review

No kidding @nictarion! I was starting to think I was going to be the only one here in our group hanging in there with the show by it's 6th episode. I didn't find it nearly as bad as others even in those really slumpy/slow episodes from 3-5 ... but even I had to admit it was just toooo slow of a slow burn like they said it would be.
What a HUGE reward at the end for hanging in there!
I'll write up a longer 'review' from my perspective later because I'm pinched for time today but I'll just say this: To anyone who quit watching half-way through ... I urge you to go back and find the episodes recorded/torrented or whatever and catch up on this because the finale is well worth it! Wow.

Honestly didn't enjoy this first season at all. I'll see what kind of info comes out for next season before I decide if I'm out or not.

So next season we're going to get zombies on a plane and zombie pirates on the high seas. Exciting!
