I thought it was okay, but I didn't love it. The characters were pretty bland for the most part. The thing I appreciated most about this episode was shirtless son of Dillane.

Meh, Kim Dickens was the only reason I didn't turn it off.

So this along with Better call Saul, possible Game of Thrones prequels and this, can we expect mostly spin offs? I can't wait to see everyone argue about whos ripping off who...

I thought it was good. It's an interesting perspective to see everything that happened at the beginning. I hope they put off the total ZA for as long as they can.
Frank Dillane was amazing though. Talent runs in that family.

Talent runs in that family. I found him and his Johnny Depp impression pretty annoying tbh. Amazing is hardly the word I'd use for his performance. We tend to disagree most of the time though so no big suprise.

Talent runs in that family. I'm with you on this Queen Carol! You and I tend to be the more die-hard TWD fans here anyways I think so we are maybe being more open minded about this spin off ... I'm enjoying it for what it is ... not something that needs to be as good as our beloved Rick Grimes world but just a different perspective. Before Rick ever came out of the coma... WTF HAPPENED?! If Rick Grimes is the dysfunctional Andy Griffith from Mayberry, then Nick is the dysfunctional Peter Brady in an LA dysfunctional Brady Bunch. I thought Dillane played a strung out junkie pretty well to be honest. I felt for him and wanted him to survive so that's enough of a hook to buy me a new protagonist to root for for a little while! His Mother and sister I could do without. The teacher boyfriend, I like him though ... he's got the right Walking Dead attitude of a survivor. I'll be watching.

Those guys are putzes. Blech. I watched about 1 minute of their schtick and wanted to stab them myself with Tobias' steak knife.

His dad is so good I was hoping for more i guess. He's young though, and it was only one episode. We'll see.

Kim Dickens was ok - I think maybe they started with a shaky script because she's been better in other things so I know it's not her acting ability. I'm reading some reviews since I'm a day late getting to watch the show and I think I agree with Forbes on this one ... the only thing that bugged me were the obvious plot device uses of the main actors. They've done it in TWD too and sophisticated show viewers can start to spot it easily. Why the fuck did Travis go to the church alone and then just let Madison blow it off as "bad things happen in drug dens all the time" like that? That was lame. He's the stronger of the two of them, he should have said "Look bitch, I saw what I saw and I don't think Nick was just having a drug induced hallucination" ... or better yet, why have them go there twice at all? Just have Madison demand to go down there with him from the git go. Again, I like it so far. I'm not one to write something off just because of a few plot holes (like wtf happened to the zombie junkies in the church... no one has seen them wandering around yet?). It's television and it doesn't have to be brilliant to be a great spinoff. It's like eating junk food because you can't have (afford) a steak dinner right now. I'll bide my time until the better shows come back on next season! This'll do.

I had really low expectations for FTWD so it didn't bother me *too* much. But it's something to watch while I try to dissect whatever the fuck is going on with TWD spoilers this season.

Yeah it's all good. I'm certainly not going to fault anyone for not liking the pilot. It started out too slow for my taste. The 'slow burn' they described ended up being too much drama and teen angst for my liking but once things picked up at the halfway point I was enjoying it. Despite AMC's huge mistake (are they doing this on purpose now?) in making the first 'known' person death we see be yet another black man, I thought the way they played out the protagonist family's first hands on experience with a walker was pretty good for the ending.

Agreed with @nictarion I'm not sold on Frank Dillane. Thought everyone was pretty bad all around.

You know what I like about this different perspective? The fact that there's not millions of half decayed zombies everywhere yet. The few we saw (I think only 2 the whole first episode?!) were 'fresh' zombies which are faster/stronger than the older decaying ones. I like that it's not obvious they're a zombie either... other than the eyes and whatever injury killed them. This will add a new layer of suspense to the story because of course no one has a clue what's going on so when they see a shuffling person in an alley, they think drunk guy or bum... so it makes for good horror especially in a crowded city like LA.

We saw 3. The junkie girl, the man in the video and Colin. And wasn't there a zombie when Travis and Maddy drove to the church? The guy with the hat?

We saw 3. The junkie girl, the man in the video and Colin. And wasn't there a zombie when Travis and Maddy drove to the church? The guy with the hat? I wasn't really counting the one we only saw via the news footage since everyone played that off like it was just some psycho that it took 20 shots to take down. Note how they were amazed he didn't die til he got a headshot ... so it will take some time before people learn wtf to do to take out a walker haha. I think they left the one with the hat ambiguous ... there was a lot of that in the show - done purposely I think, to keep it uncertain and confusing which is how people would feel. Like having Travis go to the church and finding no one there but a freaked out junkie behind a door. We expected a zombie to come out of the shadows - these are our ingrained TWD expectations and since this is such a new spin on it ... they're building that tension for as long as they can... it's good. You'll never know if someone's a zombie yet or not (like the principal just sitting there hunched over scene, another gotcha...nothing to see here moment).

Also the girl's (Alice?) boyfriend disappearinh. Could be dead, could be not.
I fully expected some zombies to attack Travis at the church.
