Children of Hurin might be the most depressing book I've ever read. Indeed. Anyone who thinks Tolkein only wrote "light" happy stuff really should read it (and the Silmarillion ofc). Bleak as hell, especially the Silmarillion, since the heroes ultimately lose. But Turin Turambar is one of my absolute favourite characters in literature ever.

Going to have to watch these this weekend now.
My favorite movies of all time. Favorite soundtrack too. Good stuff in this thread.
Random fact: my friend got me a RotK poster back in grade school in 2003 when it came out. Don't have the heart to take it down. Now I'm 25. Oh well.
