Now that Harry Potter and X-Men, two of my favourite things ever, have their own threads, I thought I'd create one for Tolkien and the Middle Earth saga as well (including the movie adaptations). I read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings when I was 12 and really liked it, but it wasn't until I saw Peter Jackson's The Fellowship of the Ring that I completely fell in love with the story. I really adore the other movies as well, but Fellowship is a perfect movie, in my opinion. I still watch it every year. It's probably my favourite movie of all times, that's how much I love it. What is your story with Tolkien?

One of the first books I vividly remember reading was The Hobbit. I'm not sure how old I must have been at the time, but it was way before The Lord of the Rings movies came out, so I guess it must have been around the time I was in second or third grade. It took me a while to finish it, and I'm pretty sure that I didn't understand everything that I was reading, but I remember loving it - and I still do, The Hobbit is an awesome book. Then in 2001, The Fellowship of the Ring was released, and my dad (who's a huge fan of Tolkien) took me and my little brother to the cinema to see the movie. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't obsessed with it like I was (and still kinda am ) with Harry Potter. During the next two years, we went to the cinema again to see the other two movies and just like before, I liked them just fine, but I didn't really love them. Then I kinda forgot about LotR for the next ... ten or so years. It wasn't until 2012 (I think), when the first Hobbit movie was to be released, that I got to see the movies again. My boyfriend at the time had just bought the extended BluRay Collection and so one saturday, we sat down together and we watched the entire trilogy in one go. It was exhausting and it took us like ... 15 hours, but I was literally blown away. It felt like I was watching them for the first time. I guess I was just too young when I watched them with my dad to appreciate all the amazing, incredible imagery, the style, the music, the genius writing and just the pure emotions present in these movies. It almost felt like some sort of revelation, I don't know how else to describe it. So, after that amazing movie experience, I borrowed The Lord of the Rings novels from my dad and I read them and ... sadly, I didn't love them. This is one of those rare instances, where I think the movies were actually better than the books. I mean, the plot itself is great and the lore is freaking incredible ... but I don't think Tolkien is all that great at telling a story, he's a genius when it comes to creating a world. Anyway, I also re-read The Hobbit around that same time and I actually enjoyed it more than LotR. Then I saw the first Hobbit movie and ... it was okay, I guess. It was nowhere near the quality of the Lord of the Rings movies, which is kinda ironic, considering that I personally think The Hobbit is the more enjoyable book of the two. Since then, I've rewatched the extended LotR-Trilogy twice and I love it more and more on each rewatch. And I totally should read the book again, I mean, after having read ASoIaF, maybe I'll be able to appreciate LotR more.

I tried to read The Hobbit several times and I just couldn't get into it. I never drop books, I love them too much, but I just didn't enjoy it. on me, so you don't have to.

I've only read the books once each, so I tend to remember the films more, but they are so wonderful. I wasn't even mad about those fake out endings in Return of the King lol

I love Tolkein's books, and I've read his Middle Earth stuff (Sil, Children of Hurin, Hobbit, LotR) so often the books are starting to tatter and fall apart. And I've preordered The Story of Kullervo (basically a precursor to The Children of Hurin) which is released the end of August. I hate the PJ films

Has anybody seen this book yet? It's been out for a few years but has remained on my wish list, unfortunately. I did have a miniature book of his a few years back that was a compilation of the watercolor drawings he drew for his children over the Christmases of their childhoods - they were gorgeous and whimsical.

Ein Ring sie zu knechten, sie alle zu finden, ins Dunkel zu treiben und ewig zu binden. Sorry, I'm watching LotR at the moment ... in German.

Basil, which one is your favourite movie? I know they are one gigantic movie, really, but if you had to choose, which one would you prefer?

It is super emotional and definitely a 10/10. It just has some minor things I don't like (Deus Ex Machina ghost army and eagles), but when Frodo says goodbye to the other Hobbits, I forget all that. I cry like a baby every single time. Fellowship, however, is my favourite movie ever as you probably know. It's perfection. The Two Towers is my least favourite, but also a 10/10. It also has the best battle sequence, IMO. Helm's Deep > every other battle.

Yay! A thread for my other favorite fantasy series. Now all we need is one for the First Law. And Dune. Anyway, The Fellowship is my favorite of the movie series as well although I never get tired of seeing Minas Tirith in the second one. I know there are some interesting changes in the movie from the books but I really enjoy watching and rewatching it. I'd like to do a re-read of the series. I've only read each book - including the Hobbit - only once. Still, I'm always available for discussing characters or plots.

Definitely my favorite movie series. There are individual movies that I love more, but as a series, yeah, it's probably LotR for me too ... (followed closely by Back to the Future ).

Well, my favourite movie of all time is The Talented Mr. Ripley. I also really love Schindler's List, Inglourious Basterds - and various Disney movies, that are closer to my heart than LotR.

Whether by the sword or the slow decay of time, Aragorn will die. And there will be no comfort for you. No comfort to ease the pain of his passing. He will come to death, an image of the splendour of the kings of men in glory undimmed before the breaking of the world. But you, my daughter, you will linger on in darkness and in doubt, as nightfall in winter that comes without a star. Here you will dwell, bound to your grief, under the fading trees, until all the world is changed and the long years of your life are utterly spent.I love this so much. The monologue, the music, the cinematography.
