I wonder how long it'll be until we see the WW's/Wights again? It's a good question, since something like this must happen in Winds of Winter. It's all kind of goofy, one could say, "remember all the Strum and Drang about the Westeros fight for the Iron Throne?" Well... forget it! I could see George headed this way , now how does he fashion so it does not become industrial strength droll?

Well its fair to say that something like this is already happening in the books at hardhome. Except Cotter Pyke is going there instead of Jon. And Tormund is heading out on his own... Was sure nice to see it though.

I actually screamed and cried a little about how incredibly freaking well done Hardhome and the army of the dead was. People have wondered if George has felt a little self-doubt seeing how well it worked to have Winds stuff happen now. I'm a writer myself, and though I'm a different kind of writer and have never accomplished anything like George's work, I would have felt pride seeing that brought to screen. Maybe he hasn't written Hardhome yet (or maybe he has and we just haven't seen it yet), but it felt very much true to his world.

This episode was all kinds of amazing. So much goodness.
It started off great with Tyrion and Dany's chat. I'm liking those two together a lot but I wonder if they'll be together in the long run. I always got the impression they wanted very different things and had extremely different philosophies. Someone mentioned earlier that Dany may be destined to break the Iron Throne. Hmmmm. Would Tyrion agree to that or does he want it himself? Can't wait to see more of them.
Then Cersei saying she'd never grovel then getting down on the floor to lap up the spilled water. I expect Marg to be released next week based on that scene of her hugging Tommen in an early trailer but not sure how. The Walk will be amazing.
Sansa and Arya were good. Will Sansa try to kill Ramsey when he returns from his "escapade" to Stannis' camp? She still has the shank and may be much bolder know that she knows her brothers are alive somewhere out there.
And then there's Hardhome. Extremely well done and that's from someone that hates the undead and all things zombie. Jon was great. Tormund was great and NotVal was amazing. I'm really sorry she was killed so soon. It would have been fun to see her interact with Melisandre and Selyse but I guess that would have been too much like the real Val. Still, I loved her spirit.
I have tons of questions about the interaction between Jon and the Night's King. I hope we get an explanation. Really excited about the next two episodes. They'll be phenomenal!!!

Exactly! I almost appended my post with that special note but figured someone else would catch it and we could have good discussion about it. That anyone denied he's the Night's King was kind of silly anyways but now we know for certain that's his title and it's pretty damn exciting to think of what that means for Jon Snow. Surely the NK recognized who Jon Snow was, both as Lord Commander of the Night's Watch and as a Stark of Winterfell! The look of interest on his face was pretty obvious. Mightn't he have mistaken Jon for a Mormont, since Jon was carrying the Mormont sword instead of Ice? But yeah, he definitely was interested in / facing off with Jon.

HBO's Inside the Episode if anyone missed it! Thanks! I did miss it. So this is where they've confirmed it is the Night's King.

I wonder how they’ll transition back into political drama at the start of episode 9. Suddenly all the stuff south of the Wall feels lower stakes, though I guess Jon trying to talk Thorne into opening the gate would elevate political wrangling in importance as Westeros’ only hope of dealing with the White Walkers.
Hardhome also raises the stakes on Stannis’ survival, since he’s the only one remotely likely to set up a dragonglass mining operation anytime soon. The Wall could really use Brienne and Oathkeeper – I wonder if she will end up there. Sansa has several good reasons to try to flee to the Wall – Jon is Lord Commander, Theon thinks Bran and Rickon might be there, and she doesn’t really have anywhere else to go. (But there are also pretty good reasons to think Sansa and Brienne go south to join up with the Riverlands plot, so I dunno.)
It was a good Sansa moment when she was sitting fully clothed and fuming at Theon. She was definitely channeling Catelyn.
And it was nice to see Arya smiling. I thought it was interesting that the Waif seems to care more about Arya surviving than Jaqen does.
So funny that Ramsay gets all those meta lines.
I thought it was interesting that Tyrion suggested the Tyrells as a possible alliance for Dany. Sounds about right. Though Tyrion notably didn’t mention the Dornish or Littlefinger.

Noticeable that in season 1 the 'zombies' were all 'fresh' , at the end of season 2 seemed to have 'decayed' zombies , last season jason-and-the-argonauts skeletal ones showed ,now it's a mix.
I like the name wight better but the show does not use it. Never liked White Walker for the Others.
What emblem does the Night King wear on his 'breast plate'.
(Why would the WW wear armor at all?)

The obviously have a wardrobe as last season they were wearing different close when they transformed the baby. In all seriousness, I think it's just a way to make them not only look cool but to let the audience know these are thinking sentient beings that they can relate to humans.

When Dany says that she's going to fight slavery in Meereen and beyond, I took it as a sign that she's going to Volantis next season.

That reminds me, there was some question about the "evil-ness" of the Others and that they might be misunderstood. However, they are clearly positioned as bad guys here - the ultimate antagonists - and I'm wondering if there will be some ambiguity in the books.

So far in the books The Others not much ambiguity about their evilness. There is about the Lord of Light supposedly the foe of the Great Other.

By the way, it's slightly off topic, but it's incredible to me. On Westeros, though this episode has one of the highest average scores, the rant and rave thread is about 16 pages longer than the positive nitpicking thread. How is that even possible?

To be fair, we have never seen White Walkers in battle before, so its posssible this is just their battle armor. White Walkers or Others clearly have a culture of their own. Maybe they are jst another race from beyond the Lands of Always winter?

I've never thought that there was any ambiguity regarding the evilness of the Others. They kill people, then reanimate them for their evil purpose, not that ambiguity.
The ambiguity should come from the human characters and what they do during and after the apocalypse. Who will fight? Who will horde food and try to make a profit of a perilous time? It'll be about who puts humanity first and who puts their own interest first. IMHO.
