According to TV guide, this is the new synopsis for E9:
Jon returns to the Wall; Arya runs into someone from her past; Mace visits the Iron Bank; Stannis faces a difficult decision; Daenerys oversees a celebration of athleticism.

Interesting that we'll see Jon back at the Wall already. I assumed they'd delay his story until the finale.
Also kind of sounds like the Stannis decision may be about whether or not to burn Shireen.

Someone asks you if you want to burn your daughter, you say no Mel can be pretty convincing and I'm guessing it will be presented as the only option for them to survive and win the war. Regardless, at the end of the day, he wouldn't allow that to happen.

I doubt it has to do with burning Shireen. More likely with whatever Liam and Carice have both talked about with something coming to a conclusion/head. We might get a better sense of what that is after tomorrows episode.

It's probably to do with Brienne or Ramsay.

After victory in the Battle of Winterfell, Stannis must decide whether to execute Roose or Ramsay first.

I imagine Tycho Nestoris will tell Mace about what's happened in KL since he left. I can't wait to see his face. "Stannis faces a difficult decision" is a vexing line. It could mean so many different things...

Wow, "celebration of athleticism" This is on the same level as "Sam and Gilly meet an older gentleman".

Just for some context about the "difficult decision", a very similar wording was used in ep. 505's synopsis to refer to Dany's about the Great Masters and Hizdahr. So while the stakes may be high, the phrase "difficult decision" doesn't necessarily raise them into daughter-burning territory.
Also it says "Jon returns to the Wall" not CB. It could very well mean CB but we should also consider the possibility of him returning to Eastwatch and finding Sam there, ready to go to Oldtown.

Sounds like a decision to burn or knight Brienne.
And/or burn Theon.
And/or burn Yara.
And/or assault Winterfell or turn around.
It could be anything. Hell, maybe he finds Gendry living in the woods and he has a second chance to burn him.

I think we should give up on the notion that Eastwatch will be on the show, at least this season but I think that one possibility for Jon getting back to Castle Black this episode is to have the conversation with Sam about going to Oldtown and then having he and Gilly leave which would clear the decks for the mutiny in the finale.

I guess given the travel times that the show will establish between 507 and 508, it'd make sense that he's back at CB by 509, you're right. So maybe what he sees at Hardhome (and of course finding out that Aemon died) will be what makes him send Sam to Oldtown? That'd work. Particularly since it's been established that Sam hasn't found out quite enough about the WWs from the CB library and that the Citadel might have better info in theirs.

The more Mace, the better.
The difficult decision could be sending Selyse/Mel/Shireen back to the Wall. Stannis arguably lost Blackwater because Mel wasn't there so he might not want to send her back this time. That could set up for them arriving just after the mutiny, Mel having realised Jon is AA and knows she needs to revive him and the whole possibility of Shireen being burnt to save him ("only death can pay for life"). Selyse, a religious fanatic, agrees - because it's only Shireen, she's nothing important to her, right? Then realising her mistake when her child is screaming for her as she burns to death, cue her crying in the snow.

I think Jon could die in ep 9. Show doesn't like cliff hangers much so I think in ep 10 well have his 'resurrection' or whatever happens. Poor Shireen. Please Sam, take her to Oldtown!!!

It looks bad, so bad... But seriously would Baratheon soldiers just stand around while she burns a child?! Oh God the possibility of both Jon and Stannis being dead in ep.10 and her doing this to bring 'Azor Ahai' and instead of Stannis Jon rises is so fucking possible rn :/
The only hope I have is that they cast the wolf for season 6 so I assume Jon is gonna warg a bit before coming back
