Terminator 1 and 2 are among the best science-fiction/action movies ever made, what the hell is going on here?

"Unfortunately, and more notably, Emilia Clarke is simply miscast. On Game of Thrones, she has proven she can play someone with a tough, fierce nature, to be sure. But this is Sarah Freaking Connor – the soldier version we all loved in T2. Part of it is simply Clarke’s youthful looks (which seem even more overt here – as though she were playing a 16-year old Sarah), but much of it is her performance too. She just doesn’t have the right presence for Sarah and it hurts a lot of would-be impressive moments when you just can’t quite buy into her in the role." ign.com/articles/2015/06/29/terminator-genisys-review

That's a shame. I never thought this looked amazing, but I was hoping that it would at least get decent reviews for Emilia's sake. Although the reviews have been awful and it doesn't look like the critics loved her performance that much. Ah well, at least there's still some hope for the BO. Also, that comment is so true. Linda Hamilton in the first Terminator and Emilia are roughly the same age, but Emilia looks SO much younger than she did even then and that was nearly a decade before T2. I really don't know what they were smoking with this casting, honestly. It's a shame because the men will likely all come out of this largely unscathed, but this will be a real stain on Emilia's filmography. Speaking of Linda Hamilton, can anyone here who was alive during the 80s please explain this hairstyle? I don't think I have enough words in my vocabulary to adequately capture how hideous I think it is.

Honestly, a lot of her line deliveries in the trailers were awful. She seemed to be channeling her cringe-worthy Khaleesi lines from season 3 and 4. Emily Blunt would have been badass in the role.

This is crap.
Only Terminator I ever liked was T2.

Emily Blunt or Tatiana Maslany would have been terrific in the role. Tatiana was up for it but Emilia got the role.
The reviews are not good but it will make money, worldwide. There will be sequels to this.
@fireandblood, I am dating myself here but Linda Hamilton's 80's hair is pretty tame. I could show you some pictures that would make you go WTF? The 80's was the decade of big, poofy, feathery hair. I do think Emilia's career will survive this movie, luckily she has more seasons of GoT to fall back on and movies coming out (like Me Before You) that are different from GoT and Terminator. If the movie doesn't do well, like Pompeii for Kit, she'll just focus on smaller budgeted movies and probably ensemble pieces. Emilia is supposedly up for the role of Queen Victoria in ITV mini-series.
Forgot to add about the box office: the only other major movie opening this weekend (in the US) is Magic Mike XXL and Jurassic World is in it's 4th weekend and Inside out is in it's 3rd. That could be a good thing for Terminator. Or it might not.

I love Tatiana Maslany but....no. I don't think this would have been a good casting for her either.

I think the movie was pretty good - way better than the last two.

Emilia will definitely survive, that's not even a question. Terminator will do well at the box office which in the end is all the studios really care about when it comes to these action movies. I mean if Kit survived Pompeii which was a critical and financial failure (it barely broke even) and still can get roles, Emilia should be fine.
Like someone else mentioned she also has several movies coming out, Me Before You, Voices from the Stone, & Go Down Together (with Nicholas Hoult).

That automatically grants him approx. 10bn chances in Hollywood.

OMG Poor Emilia, Khaleesi is really all she's going to be known as, isn't it? Someone actually though this was a good idea. FFS

Id just like to point out that after GoT Emilia is such a bankable name that any movie she is in will automatically be successful. TG doesnt have to be successfull in any sense other than economic. A film with Arnie, Emilia and that is a Terminator movie will make its production value back just off of these factors alone.

A film with Arnie, Emilia and that is a Terminator movie will make its production value back just off of these factors alone. It really won't be that simple. There are countless stars of days gone by who were "destined" for great things only to simply fizzle out. Being such a huge part of GoT will not guarantee her, or anyone's, success. She will have to be savvy with her career choices if she wants to maintain her relevance. Emma Watson and Daniel Radcliffe aren't still relevant/popular just because of Harry Potter, it's because both have been smart with how they have managed their careers. They are probably the two people that the younger GoT cast are going to want to try and emulate the most. Lawgend and Kristen Stewart are both also good role models for smart career moves (and yes, I know Twilight is awful, but KStew is actually a very capable and acclaimed actress and her filmography is more diverse and exciting than most people her age and even older), although both had success with various indies before their big breakouts. So far, of the actors "discovered" by GoT (i.e. the young ones with no prior experience), Sophie appears to have made the smartest choices at the moment. Although that is entirely dependent on how she does in X-Men and how the movie does as a whole, but it's a good move on paper, so fingers crossed. I also think you're taking for granted that TG will make back its money. With the absolutely hideous reviews and gawdawful word of mouth, it will surely will not hold well at all, and will struggle even if it manages to open with decent numbers.

Perhaps I have an optimists view. Im not, as a whole, a super fan of action movies. I did like T1 and 2 mainly for the story. The newer ones are meh. Rinse and repeat. Woo hoo. I just always think that the series has that many fans who will watch the movie just for the sake of it that money wont be too hard to come by. When comparing it to Kit in Pompeii earlier, you gotta remember that Sophie in X men and Emilia in this are both big names joining on to massive franchises. Reviews are great, but the attraction factor of terminatior movies is shocking to me. The recent movies have been... I could write a pag e worth of complaints, pretty much. But people will flock to them. Its a very wierd situation. Plus Arnie. His latest films have almost all flopped, but all of them were still technically financial successes. Not saying it'll break any records, but it will draw, and that counts for something.

I love Tatiana Maslany but....no. I don't think this would have been a good casting for her either. They were trying to go for a hot, young looking Sarah Connor. Of course given the time this is meant to be set and the huge difference between how Linda and Emilia look, it just seems like yet another of Terminator's continuity fuck ups.

Emilia did perfectly fine, imo. It wasn't horrifically bad like reviews so far indicate, but it's below any of the others in the franchise.
The movie started off a bit slow, then got cool briefly, but then ended up strangling itself. It attempted to stick to events of the original timeline, throw other events out, add new events, and by the end totally jumped off the rails by throwing the whole book out the window and explaining none of it.
The weird thing is that it both tries to be more intelligent than the original and way more dumb at the same time.
