I don't think that's true at all. TD s1 had some great moments for sure but I thought it wasn't even close to the best works of last year. The Knick, Fargo and the Affair were WAY better for starters. Way tighter and more consistent. (And if we have to invoke GoT aggressively, yes, I think s1 of GoT was better than s1 of TD, along with s4 and s5). s1 of True Detective dipped after the midseason. The question now is whether its high points were because of Cary Fukunaga or because of Nic. And of course Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson deserve as much praise.
Now I'm not shitting on s2. I like it so far but at times the writing is VERY stuffy. Very stilted. And it was in s1 too, it just seemed somewhat more natural given the accents, which can sell more archaic-sounding dialogue better for whatever reason.
You know very well that's as attributable to genre-prejudice as anything else. And the Wire never won shit, so awards alone don't bespeak quality. As for the plagiarism, he was accused of that by a philosopher whose work he utilized heavily in s1 IIRC. So that's no small thing.
Completely disagree wrt The Knick, Fargo, and The Affair. All good shows for sure, but not as good as TD S1. I think people will still be talking about Rust Cohle and Marty for years to come, those other shows not so much. And yes awards don't mean everything, as you pointed out with The Wire (though that never won anything due to being filmed entirely in Baltimore outside the Hollywood machine), but let's be honest you can't just blame GoT lack of success on winning meaningful (acting, writing, direction) awards on genre bias. The Return of the King won the Oscar for best picture. So it's not unheard of. They sure won't be talking about Paul and Frank.

Nothing can touch MM & WH together, but Ray and Ani have a lot of potential for greatness in the remaining 5 episodes.

BTW they figure out some interesting stuff on the True Detective subreddit. For instance, the girl who was topless in the pool at the Mayor's house in ep. 203 was the same girl that told Frank about Caspere's house in Hollywood in ep. 202. Which is suspicious, I'd say.

They also have a screencap of the guy dragging out Caspere's body in ep. 201, so that might be helpful in figuring things out.
But yeah, they tend to be like some ASOIAF fans over there on the True Detective subreddit with their over-elaborate theories. Reading so many of those theories led very directly to my being disappointed with last year's finale because I expected things to come together a little more grandly (though obviously that's not what they were going for with the show). So maybe I should stay away from there when we get closer to the finale. Either way, it's kind of cool to see people trying their hand at figuring everything out when we're only three episodes in.

Yeah I agree it's cool that people are so into it, definitely the most enthusiastic place I've seen as far as feedback to season two goes

Yeah, I remember that theory about Rust's oldest daughter possibly being a victim, with the way she staged her dolls, and some of her drawings she had on the walls. It sounded so plausible....then nothing. lol

Damn....that ending was nuts! Looks like NP is big on having episode 4 being his big action episode. Hopefully episode 5 will be as good as last season's.

And Jeremy Podeswa directed it too. So much for people saying he can't direct action scenes.

That ending was intense! I like how it had a lot of cuts compared to the long take from last season. It was so well done.

They're lucky Woodrugh (I think that's how you spell it) is a veteran otherwise I don't see how they could've survived that kindof firefight.

RIP Dan Dority...I mean Dixon. Yeah, that was abrupt. I thought we'd see more of him for sure. Poor guy. He just wanted to get trashed at work and be corrupt. He didn't see that one coming.

There's a pretty funny post on the True Detective subreddit called, "Marty has some advice for Frank" which is a link to this gif.

I do still think Vaughn's doing well. I think it's his dialogue that's too stylized, not what he's doing with it.
I did enjoy him saying he'd never had any cavities btw. I've never had one either and floss every day, so I enjoy someone else bragging in a TV show along the same lines that I often do in real life.
