Multiple reviews mentioned it, so I'm not sure. It strikes me as a baseless insinuation tbh. Sometimes, I think, reviewers come to goofy conclusions about things that have nothing to do with the quality of the thing they're reviewing just so they can more easily criticise them.

Sometimes, I think, reviewers come to goofy conclusions about things that have nothing to do with the quality of the thing they're reviewing just so they can more easily criticise them. Here's another one... www.vulture.com/2015/07/nic-pizzolatto-cary-fukunaga-true-detective-feud.html"On Sunday night's episode of True Detective, Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) and Ani Bezzerides (Rachel McAdams) visit a film set presided over by the worst person in the world: In a few scant minutes of screen time, we learned that the film's director is an alcoholic prima donna who alienated his crew and got mixed up in sex-party shenanigans that led to the death of a local politician. Oh yeah, and this horrible man just so happens to bear a clear resemblance to former True Detective director Cary Fukunaga, all the way down to his distinctive hairstyle. Assuming this wasn't just an unfortunate coincidence — and in the world of True Detective, there are no coincidences — this sequence should go down as the most passive-aggressive TV scene of 2015."

Talk to me about him being a hack after he writes something as awful as bad pussy. The guy made one of the best single seasons in tv history. The only time your precious D&D even came close was season 1 when they were using Martin's source material almost to a t.

You didn't just bring this to everyones attention. And guess what, people still loved the show. Critics and fans alike. It even won awards, something GoT has never done (and probably never will do).

Nice to know you pick and choose where you like your plagiarism though.

Lets not dire up the thread, I don't think any of us are interested in petty comparisons or badmouthing. Back to the show.
@konrad I know you were being tongue in cheek really but I thought the scene with Frank at the end was good. The trope would be for the old crime lord to go back to his power-trippy hands-on thuggish ways and feel a new burst of manly life, so for him to just remain empty and and ponderous was a nice change-up that just made sense for his character's motivations. He took a backwards step by having to assert dominance over (or really even just break bread with) those goons.

Guys, True Detective and GoT are just TV shows. No need to be so emotional and personal. I'm not a mod obviously, but I'm allergic to discussions that go down like this (AFOIAF sends its regards).

Finally watched all 3 eps last night. I'm liking it! Nowhere near S1 to me, but good. Liking Colin Farell (sp?) more than I thought I would. Starting off a little slow but hopefully it'll get better

The only time your precious D&D even came close was season 1 when they were using Martin's source material almost to a t. I don't think that's true at all. TD s1 had some great moments for sure but I thought it wasn't even close to the best works of last year. The Knick, Fargo and the Affair were WAY better for starters. Way tighter and more consistent. (And if we have to invoke GoT aggressively, yes, I think s1 of GoT was better than s1 of TD, along with s4 and s5). s1 of True Detective dipped after the midseason. The question now is whether its high points were because of Cary Fukunaga or because of Nic. And of course Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson deserve as much praise.
Now I'm not shitting on s2. I like it so far but at times the writing is VERY stuffy. Very stilted. And it was in s1 too, it just seemed somewhat more natural given the accents, which can sell more archaic-sounding dialogue better for whatever reason.

And the Wire never won shit, so awards alone don't bespeak quality. As for the plagiarism, he was accused of that by a philosopher whose work he utilized heavily in s1 IIRC. So that's no small thing.

Completely disagree wrt The Knick, Fargo, and The Affair. All good shows for sure, but not as good as TD S1. I think people will still be talking about Rust Cohle and Marty for years to come, those other shows not so much. And yes awards don't mean everything, as you pointed out with The Wire (though that never won anything due to being filmed entirely in Baltimore outside the Hollywood machine), but let's be honest you can't just blame GoT lack of success on winning meaningful (acting, writing, direction) awards on genre bias. The Return of the King won the Oscar for best picture. So it's not unheard of.

You're right of course that True Detective was the bigger show than those others I mentioned (though, as I said, I prefer them) but I'm saying that it's definitely not all Nic that we have to thank for that. Cary Fukunaga's work and its two leads deserve a tad more credit, I think.
On the subject of genre-prejudice, I don't know if TV has rewarded a fantasy show too highly yet. You're right that the Oscars did (for the wrong LOTR movie IMO but there's no need for me to get into that really...) but even then there seemed to be a huge sense of resentment present at the ceremony among other filmmakers who considered their work to be more serious, mainly because of genre. I do think GoT will get a handful of awards though btw, likely in its last year (not unlike LOTR in that respect really) as a sort of "well-done" pat-on-the-back pittance. I believe GrrM's spoken about genre-prejudice a few times on his Notablog, which of course could be dismissed as being solely selfishly-motivated and him just wishing he had more accolades, but he seems to think at least that it's a fairly serious and pervasive thing.

Well, bringing it back closer to topic: 3 eps, continue being intrigued. By now, everything/one is messed up. Anybody notice that the mafioso household looks almost clinically *American Beauty*, while the mayor´s mansion...well Farrell is growing on me, but seems very explicitly on Redemption Road. I would bet on him dying in the end, but maybe they´ll pull a Cohle again. Can´t figure out the rest of the cast yet. Anyways, these were the pre-screened eps. They´ll have to show some fireworks soon. PS: The soundtrack, if existant, continues being shit.

Fair enough. I completely agree with MM, WH, & Carey Fukunaga deserving a ton of credit too. Also, don't get me wrong I love GoT, but I get a little tired of some people heavily critiquing every other show on the air while ignoring (or worse embracing) all the faults in GoT. It's about consistency.

BTW the reviewer for the AV Club thought that that was an Elvis impressionist in the weird David Lynch-y opening scene. It wasn't, Erik Adams, it was a Conway Twitty impersonator. Get your shit straight!
EDIT: Here's the song btw. Being sung by a vehicle of some kind in this video.

I must say that scene was weird. I get he was out of it but still...could have introduced the father without it in my opinion.

I loved the opening scene, but I'm also a big David Lynch fan. Especially Twin Peaks.
