What are your thoughts on the finale and the season as a whole?

I didn't care for the first 40 minutes of the episode (I checked my watch when Dany was killed because it felt like it had only been 15 minutes since we started) That was too rushed, but the rest of the episode was pretty bittersweet and it played out a lot better than the spoilers read.

Better than I expected.
King Bran and the council parts are stupid, but the other scenes were fantastic.

(nervous laughter)
Watching this episode made Mad Queen Dany seem relatable.

Super controversial opinion here- I fucking loved it. me too Hard to explain why, as I do still have major issues with the writing of these last three episodes ... but it is what it is, I loved it.

I have a sort of opposite feeling which is unusual because you and I are usually on the same page. I think this show handles tragedy and nihilism better than anything else. I rewatched episode 5 before the finale and was shocked at how quickly I had accepted the turn with Dany a second time around. Everything else felt orchestrated, like they saw the final act of The Wire and wanted to emulate endless cycle theme that show did such a good job conveying. It made me realize that all of the moments of optimism were carried almost entirely by Ramin Djawadi. The score took all of the Mad Queen moments and made them feel triumphant. After everything that happened in season 8, of the burning of an entire city felt rushed, the show is beyond ballsy to try to force a bittersweet ending in the very next episode. It feels like a respite for the horrors we just had to endure, but when you take a step back it all feels so unearned.

Why do we need a Night's Watch now?

Why do we need a Night's Watch now? Honestly, I kind of liked Tyrion's explanation. The world will always need a home for bastards and broken men.

It makes sense. Most people in Westeros didn't believe that the Night's Watch was actually doing anything, anyway. They didn't believe in the monsters that lived beyond the wall. For thousands of years, the Night's Watch has been just a way to deal with criminals, a place for all the outcasts. And it continues to be, despite the fact that the actual threat has been dealt with.

It was better executed than I thought, but to be honest it didn't make feel a thing.
If anything I feel liberated.
