Damn the spoilers are flowing free, I haven't seen it yet ya'll. Since I'm replying to you both I'll do the rest in spoiler tags, but you'll probably want to avoid the thread until you see the movie. I honestly feel like very little happened. Finn and Rose (suuuper annoying) went on this whole mission where they ended up accomplishing nothing. Rey went to find Luke and couldn't bring him back, accomplishing nothing. Poe just got like a bajillion people killed. Kylo and Rey had this whole connection, but then they fought again and, surprise suprise, nothing came of it.
Rose was the worst and her and Finn kissing was dumb. Their mission was a waste of 45 minutes of screentime. Why bother with a Maz Kanata cameo? Why bother going to space-las-vegas just to not find the guy? Why go to that big ship to not get what you came for, then just flee? And then suddenly they're in love? No thanks
Leia's big Superman moment should have been part of the climax of the film, not 30 minutes in. Snoke should have been a bigger presence and have a backstory. The pacing was weird in parts. I think the movie was like an hour too long with tons of filler.
BUT I'm not a total negative Nancy. I really liked Leia's force moment. I thought those frog nun ladies were funny. I really liked the lady with the purple hair. I think that was the most visually appealing SW movie yet, too. The writing was bad but the directing and cinematography was WOW. I mean, the main theme of the movie was failure. Yoda literally spells that out to Luke. Poe gets tons of people killed at the beginning but by the end he's realised that sacrificing a load of lives to accomplish a goal isn't the right way to go about things. The heroes accomplished nothing of note, but that was the point? I dunno, that makes sense in my head. But Luke does come back, just not as some invincible action hero in the way that everyone including Rey was expecting. I'll agree that the Canto Bight subplot could have been trimmed down, but I completely disagree that it was unnecessary filler or a waste of time. If you didn't like it, you didn't like it. But I for one was glad to see a plan with a 1% chance of success actually fail for once. Plus if they never went, they never would have given that ring to Broomkid and wouldn't have inspired him to probably be a rebel or Jedi when he grows up. It's a callback to Holdo's very missable line earlier about how people recognise the symbol and feel inspired etc. I thought that was quite nice. As for the romance... hey at least it's not Anakin and Padme I liked their trip to that casino planet thing, I thought it was really beautiful but afterwords, I thought it was mostly unnecessary. I still think the hacker with the stutter could have been completely cut. And then the clownery on the First Order was just generic. I guess they just needed an excuse for Phasma to appear and then die? Also, I haven't watched the originals in years so correct me if I'm wrong, but I feel like Luke and Leia were a little too joke-y here. Idk, I just don't remember either of them being particularly funny, that was Han and Chewie. But I really liked Snoke and adored his magnificent golden bathrobe. I just wish there was any context for who he is and why he was doing what he does. How did he get power? How did he get so disfigured? Ya boi has questions, Disney!!

I actually really liked that they brought that humor back. The first thing Leia literally says to Luke is "aren't you a little short for a storm trooper?" It fit for her to be a bit of a smartass. As for Snoke. That is kind of disappointing, but in a way, we didn't know much about the Emperor either. I suppose someone could explain who he was in the next film, but I actually liked that he went out while talking shit. I suppose I didn't have a Snoke theory so not learning more about him wasn't really high on my list.

But idk, I feel like they overdid it with Luke being a "grouchy old man" stereotype or something haha. I hadn't thought about Snoke at all, I just kind of assumed it would be explained in this movie, and it just wasn't lol. Either way, he was super cool to look at. I'll probably look like that some day TBH.

OH MY GOD MY FRIENDS AND I JUST PLAYED OUR FIRST GAME OF TEAM REBELLION.
So normally, Rebellion is a 1v1 game, but we decided to play the 2v2 version. Two of my friends were Empire, me and the other friend were Rebels. He was the Admiral, I was the General.
We're doing pretty well here, we don't have many systems, but our base is out of the way and largely ignored on Geonosis. We started loading up the rebel base early on building turns, eventually leading to the building of a Mon Cala cruiser for free and getting three troops, an ion cannon, and a shield generator automatically placed in our base due to lucky mission draws.
I've mentioned before when talking about this game, the Rebels win when the Rebel loyalty marker and the time marker collide with each other and the time marker cannot move any further because it means the Rebels have garnered enough support to defeat the Empire. To gain reputation points, we have to complete objectives.
We were getting fucking shit objectives. Can't complete any involving loyal systems because we can't get any and can't risk starting any combats.
Eventually, our Geonosis base is discovered, so we have two options: move to Endor in a relatively untouched part of the map or make it on Bothawui, where we already have a ton of units and is in the center of Imperial controlled and subjugated systems. We settle on Endor and start loading up the base more after we take Utapau and get a Mon Cala cruiser and Corellian corvette under construction.
At this point, the Empire has been using a lot of missions to send out probe droids and are really narrowing down their options to find our base quickly. We've also Mon Mothma detained on a planet, Leia captured, and Lando captured and turned to the Dark Side. We're in trouble.
Suddenly, our luck starts to turn somehow? We get Mon back after a turn, we send Han and Dodonna to free Leia, and we've gained Chewie as a leader thanks to Han. At this point, they plan to attack Bothawui so I use our rapid mobilization mission to move everything we have there to our base. They've figured out its Endor but still attack Bothawui with a weak force that I shockingly defeated on a perfect roll, so we have some left over units there. We baited them. And because we rescued Leia, we got to play an objective card that gives us one reputation if we have no captured leaders.
We need five more reputation points to win. They've using every turn this move to move ships to Bespin, which is next to Endor. At this point, I'm pretty dejected but my admiral notices that we can attack Kessel, which is subjugated and only has a Star Destroyer, a TIE Fighter, and an AT-ST on the ground. We use Ackbar as our leader and they send Vader. Perfect. One of our objective cards is "Return of the Jedi", which gives us two points if we win a battle with Vader as their leader.
We send in a corevtte, two Y-Wings, and an X-Wing. We take down the TIE and do two damage to the Destroyer. We gain one reputation. Down by 4. We take down the Destroyer on our next turn. Gain one reputation. Down by 3. Now we have several cards related to ground combat, along with the Vader card and a card to gain a reputation if we win a ground battle in a subjugated system. We lose. I've lost all hope. The spark has gone out.
But do I give up? NO! BLAST IT! WE'VE COME THIS FAR! I pull a ridiculous, suicidal move and send Chewbacca to initiate a combat on the ground in Bespin. I sacrifice a Rebel transport ship to bring in four airspeeders against nine stormtroopers and an AT-ST. I roll incredibly on the first turn and destroy the AT-ST and three troopers. He takes down one speeder and I block damage to another. Next roll, I take out three more troopers. He needs to roll criticals to do any damage to me since troopers roll black dice, but speeders can only be damaged by red dice (crits count as one hit to the opposite color or two the same color).
He fails. I roll again and take out the final three troopers. He has one more shot and can't hit me. I've done three health worth of damage in a ground combat I initiated: one reputation. Down by one. I won a combat in a subjugated system: one reputation.
We did it. For the first time, on a wild shot at Kessel and a suicide mission led by Chewbacca on Bespin. The Rebellion has won.

Leia in episode 9 is such a question mark. I really, really wanted a scene of her and Kylo together in it. I don't see how they're going to get around not using CGI for her at all. I just think there will be a time jump of somewhere between 3-5 years and she'll have died of old age, but her actions and status of a figure of hope in the galaxy will be an important theme. They need time to establish Kylo as Supreme Leader and develop Rey's powers further, plus the First Order and Resistance both need time to rebuild. I think lordcarson will be right about the time jump. It's the only thing that will make sense. I thought they did say they would not kill off Leia nor would they do creepy CGI but that was before JJ Abrams took episode 9 over. Y'know, as more people on the board say they didn't like it, I feel like I need to be clear: my criticisms/rants on earlier pages were aimed at a very specific portion of really big Star Wars fans on Reddit, not on this board and not just in general. I'm referring to, for instance, the people who'll shower the prequels with praise but say these new movies have bad acting or bad writing. Even as someone who likes the prequels in spite of their many flaws, that irks me quite a lot. So I was just venting, not attacking anyone who didn't like the movie. I totally understand where you are coming from. Mr. Kingeomer can find something worthwhile in every prequel movie and did not care for TLJ. I never thought I'd see the day that l like a SW movie more then my husband did. Rose is a gem and nothing anyone says will change my mind on that. I quite liked Rose as well.

I saw it twice because the first time I had two kids talking non-stop right behind me while their dad did nothing to shut them up (sorry if I sound like a bitch, but I hate it when that happens, one of my pet peeves is people talking at the movies, it drives me nuts, even when it's my own friends asking something. If your kids can't see a movie at home without talking, don't take them to the fucking cinema and ruin the experience for everyone sitting around you. The worst part was that their dad knew his kids were not behaving and all he did was look sorry when everyone looked at him after the movie ended.) I'll confess I didn't know how I felt about the movie after that horrid experience, maybe my anger at the kids had something to do. I felt like the plots didn't connect between each other, some sequences were completely pointless and could have been cut out from the movie, but I didn't disliked it or anything like that. So I watched a second time, and this time I could actually focus on the film. I like it, I enjoyed how they subverted expectations and I appreciate Rian for trying to do something different with the story. I don't give a fuck about Snoke's death, he was just in a couple of scenes in TFA and TLJ, Kylo is a more effective villain because we know more about him, we give a shit about Kylo, he's doubts, he has emotions, he's a complex character. IDGAF about who Snoke was or his origin story. Making Kylo the main villain for the next movie is a good idea.
And THANK YOU MOVIE for not making Rey a Skywalker or a Kenobi. Great move.
I loved the throne room fight. Best part of the movie.
Maybe it's because I'm not an avid fan, but I have zero problems with the lack of lightsaber battle.
But despite enjoying the film, boy does it have issues: first of all, the casino sequence sucks. Big time. Is corny, way too long and it doesn't fit with the rest of the movie. They could have made DJ a prisoner of the Rebels that agrees to help Finn and Rose in exchange for his freedom and that's it, you have your master codebreaker without the dumb casino subplot (which adds a huge tone problem to the film, is clearly a sequence aimed at kids in a movie that is quite dramatic the rest of the time). I'm not saying Star Wars is for adults only, just that the casino part was lame and didn't fit with the rest of the movie.
Luke deserved more, he was the main character of the original trilogy and IDK, I feel he should have had a bigger role in the story before being killed off.
Also the Leia scene. You guys know what I'm talking about. It was a huge WTF. There had to be a better way to show Leia using the Force.
And even though I enjoyed Poe's storyline, why didn't Holdo reveal her plans? If part of your crew is so worried about the lack of instructions they're willing to commit mutiny maybe you should explain what you're doing. That way the crew knows there is a escape plan in motion and not feel like they're just waiting to die.

The lightsaber fight in this film is only second to ROTS (one of the few points the prequels gets) imo. My only complaint was it wasn't longer.
