The show really reminds me of Carnivale, I do hope it lasts longer. It's so deep and disturbing and really thought provoking

It does bother me that none of the control room guys seem to notice this dude scalping robots and reprogramming or whatever he is doing

Wow. Watched it last night. I find it deeply, deeply disturbing but very good thus far. When he said that she had been repaired so many times she was basically brand new. Ugh ugh ugh, and her father's memories of what happened to her...ugh ugh ugh. I have never hated Ed Harris so much before.

I might be the only person here who doesn't think he raped her at least not that night, I mean he did have that whole speech about wanting to get to the higher level of the game. this shows her on the hay holding a gun, I think there may be a twist there, her and Teddy not reacting to the roll back may be the glitch in the update or it may be Man in Black activating them somehow...or it may be the quote her dad said...GOD IT'S SO COMPLEX

I imagined sadistic torture including rape. Also, based on what her father said, I thought he'd seen her raped, tortured and murdered multiple times. They also said she was the first host, so I assumed it wasn't just the MIB but many guests who'd targeted her. I definitely think she, Teddy, and others are going to start remembering past "lives." It seems the creator is implanting mistakes into them intentionally to cause evolution to occur in them. I feel there is a twist coming too, and it hadn't occurred to me that the MIB might be involved in helping rather than hurting the hosts. That would be pretty cool. He's definitely up to something. He took that one dude's scalp. I'm betting the guests aren't supposed to take hosts' parts.

I don't think MiB is helping hosts, but other guests, or the human race, if it's the case...on the other hand in the trailer he says 'I'm here to set you free' to a host so unless it's sinister mocking...we don't know enough dammit oh Dolores was definitely tortured and raped millions of times but I don't think this happened in this particular instance

Ok saw the first episode. First this is a whole lot better than Michael Crichton's Popular Mechanics science fiction story! It's odd enough , but is it engaging? I am going to follow it, but except for Ed Harris I don't really latch onto any other character , Anthony Hopkins seems to be picking up a paycheck. I like Jeffrey Wright's character. Man I don't know Victor Frankenstein meets Ground Hog Day is odd enough, but got to wonder if there is really enough story for another season? I remember how Mr. Robot, mainly Rami Malek and Sam Esmail's dialog just grabs you by the throat the first episode... I wondered about that doing a 2nd season, now a 3rd is brilliantly set up!

Did anyone see the movie with Yul Brynner? I haven't seen it, but I know something about the MIB in that movie. It would be interesting if the same thing happened here, but they're already done something to complicate it. In the movie, he's one of the hosts, and he has gone batshit, killing guests. But in the pilot, they already showed other hosts unable to kill him, so it's not looking like he'll be a host in the series...unless they have a twist.

Everything we were told in the show and the show's website points towards him being a guest, there is an interesting line about him in episode 2 spoken by Hemsworth number 3 My thoughts on episode 2: - That new guest who shot that old dude host needs to die a violent death. I felt so bad for the old guy! - the whole Maeve dream leading up to her waking up was an incredible scene and what a traumatic one too - that scene with MiB shooting up hosts was better than the shooting in front of brothel in episode 1 - it's interesting that the first episode was Dolores centric and this was Maeve's centric, this really allows us to get to know the characters well - this episode really made me feel bad for the hosts, between the stabbing in the hand and Teddy/Kenny dying again. It's so disturbing that people would consider this 'vacation'. It's only a simulation, technically, because in their minds these are robots/toys but it's still messed up to repeatedly shoot one
I am dying here that promo for episode 3 is not online yet. I hear there are references to Medieval world and Future world there.

I watched the first episode. I will watch the second tonight.
Definitely some hints of dark shit having happened to Teddy in the past and Dolores especially. I felt bad for her "dad"...and then at the end she doesn't even notice it's a different dad. And she doesn't even realize that Teddy's storyline always has him dying, no matter what.
I think Maeve is aware. She looks pretty fed up. I have not seen the second episode yet though, I am guessing more goes into that. Really liked what I saw so far. Jeffrey Wright is the best part so far. At least they are making better use of his talents than Boardwalk Empire and Hunger Games did.

I never understood Michael Crichton's success, his science fiction always was more like fictionalized Popular Mechanics , pulpy narrative and thin characters. He only made or wrote one thing I like The Great Train Robbery , and considering what he did after that I am at loss to explain the excellence of that film. Westworld 1973 is good work for someone without any background in film, still it had clumsy staging , awkward pacing and a neophyte's tone. One thing about HBO's Westworld , it seems, that this 'Disney-world' (that was the original inspiration too) has an motivation much deeper than an 'entertainment' .(By, by, I would not pay the high fee demanded for this kind of arrested adolescence cos-play, that's a puzzling element about the theme park.) I can only guess that the androids have some kind of destination as weaponized do dads. That sure trumps Crichton.

Wait so like what is this about I'm #confused In the future there is a Western-themed entertainment park that you can go to - but it costs a lot so it's mostly for rich people. In there you can do everything you want - because the 'people' you are interacting with aren't people, they are robots that look like people. The thing is that thanks to the recent update they start to remember the things done to them by the guests and they are starting to become more and more human and aware of what is going on

My husband enjoys that genre of pulpy scifi. I'm not really into it either, which is why I haven't bothered to watch it yet. Do you think seeing it would add or detract from the HBO series at all? The main reason I find this show so disturbing is the very notion that someone would want to go somewhere and act out fantasies of rape and murder on lifelike robots. Maybe that makes me a Pollyanna. I think I get rage and impulses and whatnot, but this kind of vacation would not appeal to me. "Online research," however, tells me that many many people would like that very thing.

I just watched the first episode, loved it. Score was wonderful, and those last five minutes or so ending with Dolores swatting a fly...never in my life did I think killing a fly could seem so dramatic. Based off this episode, I think the Man in Black is trying to understand the Park for his own reasons; either some nefarious reason relating to guests of the Park and how the Park can use them (does it use them to somehow create new hosts? Do they have rights to guests' DNA and/or bodies?; is the Man in Black essentially a prisoner of the park for some reason, like being a former employee or associate of the boss?) or because he wants to sabotage the park (rival business? On hire by some corporation that objects to this whole AI stuff?)
I also agree with the idea that he is so gruesome and sadistic to get the employees of the Park not to watch him, so he can go about his business unhindered - like scalping that man. No one wants to look too closely, so he is free to examine the hosts at his leisure
