Well, I just finished Stranger Things. A few thoughts: I was initially very nervous about the cast being mainly led by children, as child actors are very very hit and miss, but they all delivered well. I think Dustin was my favourite of the main trio. I don't really care for Will. I would much rather he have died and Barbara lived. Though, perhaps he is going that way. Barb is the best. Winona Ryder was probably the best actress in the show. I'm on the El being alive train. Karen Wheeler gets the award for the most oblivious parent. I'm really pissed Barb died. She had so much potential, and I can't get over Nancy getting her killed. If she didn't go upstairs to fuck Steve, Barb would be alive and kicking. I think Barb is quite frankly amazing. Everyone I talk to about this show loved her and thought her death was brutal (also see the interview I linked with the Duffer brothers. They loved her too!) justice for Barb! I really liked Steve and Nancy by the end. Winona Ryder was fantastic. Her scenes with El were a highlight for me

I have two episodes left. Been recommending it to friends. Can't wait to see how they wrap this all up.

My brother loved it too, we talked about it on the phone for like forty minutes. His favourite character is Nancy, and ... ... he was pissed that she and Jonathan didn't end up together. I think I might do a rewatch soon, maybe I can convince Daniel to watch it with me this time. I doubt it.

I thought it was really interesting that it subverted some of the normal tropes. Nancy drinks a beer and has sex, and instead of getting killed, her friend gets killed. The usual trope is the girl who has sex gets "punished" by the killer, and the virgin lives. I also thought it was cool that the asshole Steve ended up having a soul. The normal trope would be that the popular kid who talks the girl into sex is soulless and the quiet, weird guy is soulful, and of course the quiet guy gets the girl in the end. The jealousy thing. It was a normal part of the trope that Dustin points out that Lucas is jealous of Eleven and Mike, but normally he would be jealous because he too likes Eleven. In this case, he's jealous because she girl took his best friend, Mike. Also, the normal trope would be for Lucas to beat the monster in the end with the slingshot (David vs. Goliath). It looked for a moment like that would happen, but nope, it was Eleven.

I thought they had great chemistry and they were really good for each other, so I was pretty bummed out when they showed that she stayed with Steve despite everything. Those scenes where the boys were harsh to El were heartbreaking.

Those scenes where the boys were harsh to El were heartbreaking. I hated the idea of Jonathan and Nancy. The guy was taking photos of her undressing, which is awfully creepy. Sure, they made right in the end, but I didn't feel there was the connection between those two that there was between Nancy and Steve. I thought, like @witchy that the breaking of the trope with Steve and Nancy was well done. I did really like how they did so many homages to the 80s but managed to change things up to remove the cheesiness/silliness. one of my favourite scenes though (or combination of scenes rather) is the dress up "Pretty?" Scene, and the later "still pretty?" Scene. I was smiling and crying at that

I had very mixed feelings about that. I liked that Steve kept showing up and kept showing more and more heart, and ended up saving Nancy's life. I thought that was really cool. I also thought subverting that trope was cool because it meant Nancy didn't have such terrible judgment. But I really liked Jonathon and their relationship was very sweet, so I was totally shocked by the turn of the events. I wasn't really bothered by the photographs. It was definitely a creepy move, but it wasn't like he tracked her down to stalk her. He just looked up and realized he had a chance at seeing his crush naked. I can understand how you might perv out pretty easily in such a situation.
I loved the pretty scenes too. What an adorable little character!

Finished it last night. Husband and I really liked it. The producers say there is a possibility for this to go several seasons and keeping some of the cast around. Be curious to see if they keep the same kids or focus on other kids in Hawkins when Mike, Will and Co. all inevitably grow up. I have to agree that I really liked the fact that Steve subverted common 80's movie tropes. I could totally understand why he broke Jonathan's camera for spying on Nancy and also get why he was mad when he thought Nancy cheated on him...but he took it too far with his insults of Jonathan and his family. I was a little disappointed that Jonathan and Nancy did not get together but I felt like there was no reason to break up Steve and Nancy either. I liked that Jonathan realized his error with Nancy and Steve realized where he was wrong. I loved the true friendship between Will, Mike, Lucas and Dustin and then adding Eleven to the fold. It was heartbreaking to see the boys get angry with her. I thought it was odd though, given Will's and Barbara's disappearance how none of the parents were putting a tighter reign on their kids, with the exception of the Wheelers on Nancy. And super spoiler alert...I found it odd to have a character named Nancy... growing up in the 80's...I was the only Nancy throughout my whole school experience...just struck me funny.

On your point about being put on a tighter rein, I also considered that for a while, but then I got to thinking, wasn't the 80s quite a big time for "latch key" kids? Which would inevitably mean they were given more freedom, with one or both parents not in when they got home, so they'd be able to slip out with no one any the wiser?

Ok spoiler tag is not working for me but this is not a spoiler, yes the 80's were the era of the latch key kids but I can tell you as an 80's kid that there is no way, my mother would have let me wander off for hours especially with kids disappearing in the neighborhood. Oddly enough, my brother's best friend's sister went missing (she was a senior in high school). She was last seen crossing the bridge to the next town over and was never seen again. I was fairly young when it happened, but I remember her "missing" flyers all over town and in people's cars. I think about three or so years later, they found her bones at the train tracks. They only have theories as to what happened and who might have killed her but no one has ever been arrested. Here is a news article about one of the suspects or the main one...he was arrested for something else linkGrowing up, parents would call each other if their kids were late or drive/walk around the neighborhood looking for you. One time me and my friend lost track of time playing up at the field nearby our houses and our very worried Dads came up looking for us. So even the Wheeler parents being unaware of extra guests in the house for a long period of time seemed weird to me. But I grew up in a small home, one of six children...my parents definitely would have noticed extra people in the house!

But we were very respectful and didn't go beyond the limits set for us...usually. They were just very broad limits. That's so sad about your brother's friend's sister. I used to watch crime shows a lot, but then I saw some kids I knew on Forensic Files, and it ruined it for me. Basil you are right though. The one on the right looks a bit like Michel Huisman from that angle...

I've watched the first two episodes, and I like it, but I'm confused by a few things. Granted, I've been drinking heavily both times I watched it, but what's the deal with the missing kid? Does one of the other kids look exactly like him? Or is he not missing at all, and just hanging out in the house with Winona Ryder?
