I liked it. It started a bit slow, dragging a bit in the first hour, but definitely got better in the end. The show is more about character study than music history, as I thought, but that's Ok. I enjoyed Cannavale and Ray Romano most, and really loved the Bo Diddley's dreamlike sequence. And the soundtrack, of course.

Really liked it, more than I expected, and more than some recent Scorsese films, although it isn't fair to compare across formats. Although I worry about it long-term, will just have to hope it can differentiate itself enough from the many other flawed male hero dealing with power and success setups.
A couple of little things: the actor's Robert Plant impression was just dreadful. No idea what he was doing with the accent but more so he came across like a bad caricature - probably Jagger getting personal. Father Beocca's Peter Grant, on the other hand, was fucking hilarious. Perfect bit of character actor casting.

But yeah, I'm not too big on Zeppelin myself but that was a very un-Planty Plant we got there. Even I know that. Now apparently Peter Grant weighed quite a bit more (again I'm not really up on all the Zeppelin info out there) but still, great to have Hart back on HBO. Wish GoT could get him. And hopefully it wasn't just a cameo.

He's done a load of great stuff sure, just picked that very recent thing so people who don't know the actor's name might understand who I'm talking about. Yeah it wasn't a hugely accurate Peter Grant either but it was totally brilliant.

That is an interesting bit you said there about some of these characterisations maybe being Mick settling scores with various perceived rivals in the industry. Now I can't wait to see who the show shits on next.

Ratings for Vinyl's premiere: variety.com/2016/tv/reviews/ratings-the-walking-dead-vinyl-premiere-1201707036/"“Vinyl" two-hour premiere Sunday drew just 764,000 viewers. The drama, which stars Bobby Canavale as a New York record executive in the 1970s, came in considerably lower than other HBO drama openers in recent years like “The Leftovers” (1.77 million), “True Detective” (2.33 million) and “The Newsroom” (2.14 million)".I'm mildly surprised with the weak numbers.

It did have to go up against The Walking Dead's mid season premiere, and 2 hours may have turned some off. Hopefully it gets better.

That's dissapointing. Hopefully some good word of mouth will bring more people for the next episode.

I still haven't seen it The runtime is quite discouraging, but I fear anything over 90 minutes after seeing The Revenant

Those numbers are a bit concerning.
I finally watched it. I thought the premiere was ok. Bobby Cannavale was terrific, as always. I am absolutely in love with Ray Romano's dramatic acting, I don't know why he keeps surprising me when I thought he was great in Men of A Certain Age (which should NOT have been cancelled), in Parenthood and now this.
Hopefully the next episodes will pick up and word of mouth will too. I understand there will be more rocker appearances. I think "David Bowie" is supposed to appear in episode 7 or 8.

It being a period drama won't help the ratings either. The setting is probably wholly unrelatable to a lot of people which will make it harder for them to get into it. We'll see how it goes.

I still can't get through the first episode. I like the blonde chick with too many drugs. I can't stand the dark haired main dude. He's an asshole, and I don't want to see him succeed. I was _finally_, _finally_ beginning to enjoy it a little with that crazy-ass karaoke scene, but then the disgusting thing happened, and it grossed me out, and I had to turn it off.
The End.

Guess the lack of activity in this thread means people were underwhelmed by the 2nd episode? I didn't think it was bad, but I didn't like it as much as the 1st episode. Didn't care much for the flashbacks, and Juno Temple wasn't in it enough. Richie busting out his Bruce Lee moves on Ray Romano and the other guy was pretty hilarious though.

I liked it. It flowed better than the premiere in some ways but of course the lack of Scorsese makes for a drop in directorial quality. And I liked the Warhol/Velvet Underground flashbacks

I preferred this episode to the premiere.
The first 10 minutes were hysterical with Richie punching everyone and being all coked out during that kung fu movie. I loved it.

I thought it was ok, bur probably a bit slow compared to the premiere. Richie flipping out in the office was hilarious and I do like how the flashbacks are starting to paint Devon's past, but besides that there really wasn't enough going on. There's still a whole season to go for that though.

The kung fu punching was hilarious. I thought Ray Romano killed it in this episode. As my husband said, "Oh no, he's got Debra 2.0 in this one." I also had to explain Lou Reed/The Velvet Underground/Andy Warhol Factory Girls to husband, as he only knew Andy Warhol was an artist. Max Casella was very good at the end when he told the punk band they sucked and why. Juno Temple threatening the secretary at the end was pretty good too.
