Charlotte Rampling is a fucking moron. What a fool. Racist to whites? LOL! Because the majority of nominations would go to men. Sure what she said was very off and insensitive but again, wishing death upon someone over a comment is seriously gross I know I was just calling her an idiot for her stupidity. Which I really still can't get over I'd have thought someone as articulate and intelligent as her wouldn't say something so dumb.

Yeah I get you don't agree with the death wishes The problem is though that there are always such strong and extreme reactions to something like this that it's really hard for me to side with the people who would say 'the bitch deserves to die'. In Rampling's defense she is really not Hollywood and probably doesn't realize the scale of the problem. but she did chose her words very poorly

AMPAS have to take some blame for this, though. Of course the issue is with the industry as a whole and not necessarily the Academy, but it's not like there was nothing they could have gone for. Idris Elba in supporting actor showed up everywhere that means anything (i.e. not BFCA LOL), but they still snubbed him. He was absolutely in 6th place and absolutely a snub. A glaring one? No. He wasn't expected to win and was always kind of on shaky ground, but everywhere went for him and AMPAS still said no. Neither Will Smith or MBJ were expected to get noms, so I'm not going to comment on them, but there were definitely some actual snubs here.
The very blatant snub of Carol, one of the best, if not the best, reviewed films of the year that got SIX nominations but no BP, is what I find more troubling. AMPAS is still disgustingly, noticeably resistent to LGBT films.

Also the thing is that Netflix was behind the movie so who knows how many Academy members even saw it. Dano and Shannon were close too but also missed. I really don't think that Academy deliberately went 'NO' when they considered him, I simply think not enough considered him because of circumstances and the nature of the movie. If the film got nominations somewhere else and they snubbed Elba I would be with you on this because that would mean they saw it and said NO. But he simply missed out as many before him and many after him will. Also there are so many categories on Oscars and every one focuses on acting nominees. But in reality so many people of color were nominated and won in recent years when it comes to director and writer and cinematographer etc. As for Carol I didn't like that movie but yeah, you are right

Basically, if you have an opinion on the internet and enough people notice, you will get death threats. It doesn't reflect on everyone who thinks the Academy needs to get their shit together.

Winners and nominees are all automatically put forward for consideration, but winning/getting nominated doesn't guarantee an invite. Other than that, you have to apply for membership and have the filmography to back up your application, as well as sponsorship from two people who are already members of your selected branch. Then every summer, the board of governors meet, review the list of nominees/winners + applicants and then decide which of them are going to get a formal invitation to join. I did not even have to look that up, which means I need to get a life

The industry needs to get their shit together, the Academy can only do so much with what is given as options I mostly agree. 8 Amateur question: how do people become part of the Academy? 'To become one of the 6028 voting members of the Academy, you better be in the business. Aside from requiring an “unusually high level of quality and distinction” in their respective fields, candidates must also meet quantitative standards. Writers, producers, and directors must have at least two screen credits to their names, while actors must have credited roles in at least three films. Candidates in the technical branches—like art directors or visual effects supervisors—must be active in their fields for a certain number of years (just how many varies based on the particular area of expertise). If wannabe Academy members don't have the necessary credentials, they can also find two or more current members to officially sponsor them; their membership is then either approved or denied by an Academy committee and its Board of Governors. But the easiest route to Academy membership is simply to get nominated: Those who were nominated for or won an Oscar the previous year and are not currently a member are automatically considered. Once inducted into the Academy, an individual can belong to only one branch. Ben Affleck, for example, can only be an Academy member as an actor and not as a director, and Brad Pitt can only belong to the Academy as an actor and not a producer.' Is from a very interesting article about how Oscar Nominees are chosen

Well, I guess one good thing has come from this: AMPAS are officially kicking out the oldies.

I think there should be a rule that no one should speak until Viola does. She is always on point. I did not know people were wishing Charlotte Rampling death...that's going too far. Yeah, she said something profoundly stupid...but wishing her death is ridiculous. Probably going to see a lot of oldie actors taking a lot more movies like Dirty Grandpa or something to keep their status

The Oscars are basically a circle jerk for wealthy white men. Honestly who the fuck cares what movies they want to recognize? This was a long time coming, they haven't been relevant for decades.

Well it's obviously good for your career to win an Oscar. I won a photography award a couple of years ago. It's basically meaningless, but it is a nice thing to put on my resume.
