I've been on a horror kick lately. Its always been my favorite genre, but I've been disappointed with the modern ones. I've recently watched It Follows which I liked and I've just seen Oculus, You're Next, and Girl House which were just ok for me. Any good recomendations? My favorite modern one is The Strangers.

The Strangers is a good flick. I find those types of movies much more disturbing than the supernatural stuff.

Have you seen Martyrs? It's a french horror movie from 2008 and definitely one of my favourites. It's probably one of the most disturbing movies you'll ever see, though. This guy ruined The Strangers for me.

The director of the Strangers claims he's never seen it, but it's a blatant ripoff of a French horror movie called Ils(Them) which was pretty effective and understated. The Strangers was well done, and it had a great ending, but still employed a few annoying cliches and I struggled to really get into it after having recently enjoyed Ils.
If you liked It Follows you should check out films by John Carpenter and David Cronenberg, which were big influences. Halloween, The Thing, Videodrome, and The Fly being the best places to start. Halloween is the ultimate violation of the safety of modern suburbia, and the others are classics of skin-crawling body horror.
Early 2000s were dominated by J-horror flicks and you owe it to yourself to check out the original Pulse by Kiyoshi Kurosawa, a film as creepy and unsettling as it is relevant to modern times, concerning how technology isolates humans. You should also watch Takashi Miike's Audition, a seriously disturbing film that turns Japan's misogynistic gender roles on their heads in a deceptively misleading hallucination of a film.
I'm a big fan of slow burn, psychological horror films such as Repulsion, the scariest film by Roman Polanski, even scarier than Rosemary's Baby, it's about a beautiful woman stranded by herself in an apartment and forced to deal with the psychological and emotional scars that are dwelling underneath the surface. Along similar lines, I think there's an argument to be made for Black Swan being one of the most effective horror movies of the past few years.
Look to Mexico for Guillermo Del Toro's The Devil's Backbone, a film so scary not just because of the tragic ghost story that's set in an orphanage during the Spanish Civil War, but because of realities of mankind's cruelty that is revealed along the way. Also check out Mexico's Santa Sangre by Alejandro Jodorowsky, a nightmarish carnival of a movie that explores the loss of innocence and duality of man struggling with love, religion, and sexuality.

I don't know if you would consider it horror (it's more sci-fi/thriller) but one of the scariest movies I've seen lately was Beyond the Black Rainbow.
I just watched Ex Machina which gave me a similar, though more coherent vibe.

This looks good. It slipped by my attention.

The most recent horror film I've seen was It Follows, which wasn't bad, but the ending made it seem like there was going to be a sequel. Guillermo del Toro's film Crimson Peak also looks pretty good based on the trailers. As for Classic horror movies, I remember watching The Exorcist and I thought it was hilarious so Halloween still remains one of my favorites too.
EDIT: I didn't realize Jack mentioned It Follows already. I should probably stop drinking.

This guy ruined The Strangers for me. Oh my God, that movie. I never want to see it again. I love horror movies. My favorite smaller ones (not the usual suspects like The Exorcist, The Omen, Texas Chainsaw, Susperia, etc) would be Red, White, and Blue Starry Eyes Wicked Little Things We Are What We Are Home Movie Trick R' Treat
