Just rewatched Scream 4 the day before yesterday! RIP Wes Craven.

I just bought In the Mouth of Madness(John Carpenter) and The Descent(Neil Marshall!) on BluRay. Both are pretty scary. The Descent in particular has a tension that permeates throughout the film, and probably one of the most effective jump scares in recent memory.

It's partly because it's that scary, partly because of the climbing (I climb in real life, poorly, and frightened the whole time.) You know when you get so scared your eyes tear up uncontrollably? Yeah, that. I've been wanting to see it again, but I'm kind of afraid of scaring myself again.

The Descent is so great, that ending fucked me up so hard. Too bad the sequel was pure garbage.

Fuck. Scream is my favourite scary movie ever. Good lord, Skeet Ulrich was so sexy. But his name is Skeet. SKEET. I don't really care about the actor, to be honest, but I love the character. Maybe I'm just weird, but bloody, crazy eyed Billy Loomis does things to me.

I didn't even know they made a sequel. Don't bother watching it. Seriously, it will affect your enjoyment of the first movie in a negative way.

Yeah, that scene was horrible and made me sweat. I could barely watch the part where they cross the void with the carabiners and rope and potential falling...oh hey, writing about that makes my eyes tear up.

I recommend "The Cabin In the Woods" for horror fans who haven't seen it. It's a horror movie watcher's movie.

I need to see it again pronto.

I don't know why, but I still have a soft spot for that 2002 Hollywood remake of The Ring starring Naomi Watts. Everything about that movie just captivates me like a good drama would. Naomi Watts as the main protagonist, the sad piano-heavy music, the sinister but yet somehow beautiful cinematography and last but not least the story which is centered around the relationship between mothers and children. I pretty much love the first Silent Hill movie adaptation for the exact same reasons (minus Naomi Watts of course).

If you don't mind frequent and extremely obnoxious jump scares, go watch Drag Me to Hell, it's one of my favourites. It's so gruesome and macabre that it almost becomes comical, but the atmosphere is very creepy and there is one particular scene towards the end that is so freaking awesome, it makes the entire movie worthwhile.

Silent Hill is probably the best video game adaptation ever made. It completely nailed the somber tone and unsettling atmosphere of the games, which are the most important elements. Using the music from the games really helped, not only is the movie scary, like the games, it has this constant feeling of sadness lingering just under the surface. The sequel was such a disappointment, but I'd love to see them take another shot and try to get at least one more film that captures the feel of the original.

Yes, they absolutely nailed the atmosphere of Silent Hill, but the story of the movie was lackluster, imo. I didn't like how much they have simplified the entire Silent Hill mythos, basically, they've reduced it to a bunch of religious nutjobs burning an innocent little girl as a witch, who then makes a deal with the Devil to take revenge. That's not even remotely what Silent Hill is about and sadly, the movie failed to capture all the deeply psychological and symbolic side of Silent Hill's horror (for example, the Red Pyramid Thing and the sexy nurses are both monsters specific to James' nightmare, they should not be part of Alessa's).
On it's own, the movie worked really well and especially compared to other video game adaptations, it was fantastic, but as an adaptation of Silent Hill, I was a bit disappointed.

Yeah, but video games just don't translate well to films, and the fact that you can count video game adaptations that could be considered good movies on one hand shows how difficult is. The story was simplified, sure, but like I said in my review, the most important aspects of Silent Hill, for me, are the atmosphere, moody music, and lingering feeling of sadness. Sure I like the stories in Silent Hill 1 and 2, but what sticks me are the feelings of unease I had walking through the foggy streets and terror from seeing Pyramid Head dragging his sword across the ground. I know story is important to you but for me it's just a tool of eliciting emotions from the viewer/player. Silent Hill the film made me feel the same emotions I feel while playing the games, so for me it was a complete success.
