If its a solid 30 more episodes that gonna mean more contract negotiation.

I hope they are not forcing this upon D&D though - they should be allowed to wrap it up however they want, considering the good job they have done so far.

I'd come to terms with the idea of it being done in seven seasons, so I'm not quite as enthused about this as I would've been a few years ago. Partially because I want my dog to still be alive for the finale (because I sing his name to the show theme when the episodes come on and he quite likes that) but three years more might be too much there...
I'm assuming this is because of how much material is covered in TWOW and ADOS (or at least the outlines that GrrM gave them). Assuming that material is good, then this should all turn out well. D and D used to always talk about eight seasons anyways before the official line changed on that subject around when s4 came out. So hopefully there's some sort of plan in place to pace this all well.

The title of this thread made me think of six seasons and a movie

I can't rightly remember what conversations about how many seasons there were before season 4. Seems GRRM had something to say and I can believe D&D did say something about 8. The most definitive was when the question came up Red Carpet premiere season 4. I remember explicitly Dan Weiss being asked (by Mr. Goofus) how many? Weiss said "We are half way." David Benioff piped up "Seven". Weiss said "O yeah Seven." Frankly I don't think they really knew at that point. I can't remember all comments about number of seasons between 4 and 5. I think the success of season 4 was on HBO's mind , so to speak. Seems D&D started putting the down the limit to 7. There is still that 'sort of' single panic interview with George where he implies that he thought he had more time for Winds (no comment) because and he implies he thought novels 4 and 5 would be two seasons. That's when the 'movie' was floated. Somewhere before and after season 4 I seem to remember Hibberd starts riding this issue. Then before season 5 we have the Hibbered interview with Lombardo who says (not quoting exactly here) that HBO is interested in more than 7 but are deferring to D&D. This is where the 'movie' gets mentioned again. Between season 4 and 5 there is a lot of GoT BUZZ, also the season 7 contract extensions. Benioff waffles before season 5 with his 7.5. HBO announces their 'better' tracking of viewers (apparently more than just the USA) numbers. I think I see more GoT 'merchandising' , anyone else notice this? I really think things were fluid during and after season 5. A problem arises , GoT is busting HBO records, what's on HBO's horizon that can compete? I don't think it is Westworld. I think HBO (and Time Warner) speculate that GoT will generate more revenue , not just the show's, IMAX ? (maybe) and merchandising (Disney became a zillionaire off selling gewgaws, tho those were not associated with R rated visual narrative!) Push came to shove with the success of season 5. I think the possibility was discussed but the decision was not made until just recently. D&D probably got an offer they could not refuse. I now would not rule out a movie!

I don't have a link at hand but they definitely used to talk about eight seasons. Something changed their mind in the interim and something's now changed it back, I guess. I would've been very cool with just getting seven personally but if TWOW and ADOS are really loaded with plotlines that would make for good TV, then I guess they do merit a season and a half each. We'll see.

If they are set on doing a prequel, I sure hope they cast a worthy successor predecessor of Mark Addy as Robert.

I also have the hazy recollection that CEO Richard Plepler also had speculated about GoT extension, not just Michael Lombardo. I think the actual decision has been in the air since the end of season 4, but only recently has it been finalized , probably the success of season 5. (And a lackluster new True Detective)

(And a lackluster new True Detective) They've met GrrM every year since the first big outlining-the-endgame sitdown (which IIRC was before they wrote s4) for similar sessions where he breaks down plotlines and characters' fates etc, so it is very possible he's thought up and told them something new in the meantime that made an extra season worth it. We'll see.
Or it's also possible that they never decided against 8 seasons and jut went along with that line for a while to get paid better for s8 or to ensure a better budget for it or something. There're a ton of possibilities really.

Come to think of it, in retrospect I guess it was pretty telling that, even after talking at the time about wanting seven seasons, D and D still referred to s4 as being the halfway point back in 2014…

Of course then David early this year said 7.5.

IMO, no new information was revealed yesterday, but nothing can halt the GOT buzz train. Last year D&D threw out the vague phrase "70-75 episodes" and this takes us into a 8th year (2018). I'm sure the agents of D&D tell them not to commit to anything as part of their leverage (D&D have a TON of leverage obviously because HBO needs them)
I'm sure HBO has been pushing and pushing to squeeze one more subscriber season. I do think we'll end up with 80 episodes. They could even split the 8th season to squeeze the extra subscriber year (2019). While I'm not sure I would love that or not, at least it would give GRRM a whole another year to finish Winds (Okay - he better be finishing Dream)
Still it makes me wonder if D&D are planning to return to the completed source material (AFFC/ADWD) for half of the sixth season, especially since the 8th season is likely to happen. They could spend half the season getting Brienne/Jamie/Sansa/Ironborn/Davos) back to their adapted arc, although I have no idea how it will work because all the other characters arcs are current and you can't keep them out of the show.
I always felt that D&D probably told HBO before season 4 launched "we will need two seasons to get through AFFC and ADWD because of the quirky chronology" - and that got them the 2 seasons renewed (Seasons 5+6) upfront which was unprecedented at the time. So now they can go back a little with the 8th season.

We'll see. I remember two powwows in Santa Fe, GRRM with D&D before season 3 and another with D&D and Bryain before season 4. Apparently these guys met with George in San Francisco before the season 5 , but I think there have been other times too.

I guess I'm happy about this. I thought they might not have time to put everything in 7. Season 5 felt too rushed to me. I wouldn't want 6-7 to be that way. Moving the story along and rushing storylines isn't the same thing. Hopefully they'll take their time and have everything feel right.
