After all the time where it seemed that seven years would be all we get, this is actually a very nice surprise. Contrary to some, I don't think 3 more full seasons are in the danger of dragging out the story. We have every reason to believe that Winds and Dream will be huge books, much closer to ASoS than to ADwD where plot progression is concerned. So, 1.5 seasons per book? Sounds just about right. The only thing that gives me (a bit of) pause is whether there's enough meat on the bones in ALL the separate storylines. I don't doubt that Jon, Tyrion, Dany, Arya, etc. will have enough stuff to do; characters like Bran might be problematic if the writers can't come up with appropriate season-long arcs for them. Welcome to the board, another filthy show apologist like Konrad and I. Why thank you!

Only thing that concerns me is if GRRM introduces any additional characters major or semi-major. I don't think the backbone story plot can take it! At least without the books running out to 10 novels. George says he is converging. I think if a lot of arcs converged in Winds he would not have to kill a lot of characters off till Dream.

It really bothers me how they don't seem to do long term planning with this show - after 3rd season? OH MY GOD let's speed up! And we get rushed 4th and 5th season. And now it turns out it's gonna go a season longer? What are they doing? This is a reasonable position regarding the fifth season, and something the fandom pretty much expected would happen in combining two huge, if uneventful, books into one season. However, I don't think it applies to Season 4 which I would hardly call rushed. I can't really think of a storyline that would fit that description. (Unless we're talking about certain scenes, like the relatively common criticism of the Jaime-Tyrion scene in 4x10 which many people seem to think of as being too abrupt.)

And we should remember that D and D used to talk about eight seasons for years before they started saying seven. So there's very likely a contingency in mind for how to handle that and pace the TWOW and ADOS plotlines that GrrM's relayed to them. And the cuts made to AFFC and ADWD don't mean that TWOW and ADOS will be similarly abridged. If they're on par with ASOS quality-wise, I could see three more years working quite well.
I don't think this was forced upon them though. It's even possible that the seven seasons line was just them playing hard-to-get so HBO would cough up more money for the eighth season. I imagine s8 (if this won't somehow be an s7b scenario, that is) will become quite the payday for most people involved in the show, so I imagine D and D and GrrM will also want to get their hands on all of that cash that'll be fluttering about then. It could well have just been a negotiating tactic. If so it worked.

I am thinking from a business standpoint they were hoping something new would loom on the horizon, even with good programs True Detective ... Girls... it didn't happen (True Detective looks like it might be done for). Even at True Blood's height it did one half of GoT's viewership. I don't think Westworld is going to last. When GoT S5 outdid S4 ... I am sure Time-Warner had a heart to heart with HBO mahogany row, "You know that GoT card, you have been floating?" "Play it!".

No matter how many seasons, D&D need to leave the Episode 9 big event shit behind.

That one we might find out before the show ends. ADOS on the other hand we may never get. Still, I hope they're more eventful and not split by location and POV like the last two books. It's too early to guess that for sure though, I guess. I think TWoW - 2016 ADoS - 2018 - 2021 Realistically TWOW - 2018 ADoS (1) - 2027 ADoS (2) - 2099 To be fair, ADoS part two will be delayed due to the inevitable machine uprising, at which point George himself will become a machine. And at some point over that period George will announce he intends on writing an eighth book "A Trolling of Fans" Seriously, I actually find the possibility of this far more believable than a 2016 release. I think George has really fell behind with this series and I hope he doesn't rush to finish, since it'll make the end result messy. If George needs to take time, so be it. I'll buy the books anyway, if only to please George 2.0 and our eventual machine overlords. But seriously now, I can't see us getting TWoW for at least two years.

Why my boy, with the invention of cloning, you can be two machine overlords! Maybe even three!
