Taron deserves it and so does the movie. I don't know that the Oscars will remember it but it deserves to be, if you ask me. Taron won! I was so happy to see that. He deserves it! I saw he is also nominated for a BAFTA. Hopefully this means good chances for an Oscar nod.

Movies I have watched lately:
Star Wars the Rise of Skywalker: huge disappointment.
Frozen 2: some enjoyable moments and songs, but the story is really lackluster and creates more plot-holes than it solves.
Knives Out: very enjoyable. Solid story, amazing cast, great message. Full of tiny details that just make the story work and reinforce the ending of the film.

Joaquin Phoenix won the BAFTA for Joker last night and used his acceptance speech as a moving condemnation of the systemic racism of the entertainment industry. Was very impressive, especially his willingness to identify that he was a part of the problem by not using his privileged position and acting to change things

so birds of prey was a lot better than i hoped for. random thoughts - why was huntress in the movie? the least developed member of the ensemble, and the weakest performance. especially when the whole plot focused on her family heirloom, you think they would have given her more than 5 scenes. oh well.
-loved that they didn't whitewash harley too bad. that was my biggest gripe, that they were gonna sanitize her a little too much. but for the most part, the movie actually went out of it's way to show how many people she has hurt, and what an immoral nutjob she really is. another one of the characters flat-out calls her a terrible person at the climax of the movie.
-also, the presence of the joker without the joker actually being there was a cool touch. harley rampaging through other mob boss's nightclubs with impunity because they were scared of the joker was a nice way to exemplify it. and once she's no longer the joker's girl, it's open season on her. and she's pissed off a lot of people. also relating to the joker, the way they handled their breakup was decent, by barely handling it at all. they basically just said "oh he got tired of her and put her out," which is fine. however, going as far as CGI-ing Jared Leto out of Suicide Squad flashbacks was a little extra. I guess that's a money/clearance thing? like they literally erased him from the shot.
- black canary and montoya were great. black canary being a singer is something i love in the comics, and her being roman sionis's "little bird" was cool, and showed how she was under his thumb (until she wasn't anymore). however, montoya inexplicably knowing who Dinah was, what her secret power was, who her mother was, and what her mother did was a little too convenient for me. but the thought of an OG black canary running around gotham in the 80's is cool and they should do something with that.
-black mask and zsasz were great. though it was out of left field, the sexual undertones (well, overtones, honestly) of their relationship were done well. the actual Black Mask design was good, though I wanted to see it for more than 30 seconds. the only mindfuck was that Roman and Zsasz were behind the murder of Huntress's family....that would have been believable if we weren't expected to believe that was 20 years ago, and neither of them look older than 35.
-gotham city had no flavor and didn't feel like gotham city (except for the creepy amusement park at the end). no mention of gordon, despite half the movie taking place in a police station, batman apparently doesn't exist anymore, and the joker is nowhere to be found. weird, and will never be resolved cause Batfleck is done.
-where is barbara gordon??? the birds of prey is literally her whole thing...
- my biggest grievance was cassandra cain. in the comics, cassandra is the mute, presumed-to-be autistic daughter of lady shiva and david cain, two of the most deadly assassins in the world. they had her basically as a business arrangement and to breed the perfect killer. batman eventually rescues her and blah blah blah. apparently the only thing Warner Bros remembered about her was that she was Asian, cause other than that, she's literally a different person. she talks, which defies her most defining characteristic. idk who directed the actress to talk like a white person putting on a blaccent but that was cringe. they point out she has foster parents, so i guess the door is open to possibly explore her heritage somewhere down the line, which they should def do cause lady shiva is cool as fuck. but yeah they dropped the ball on cassandra big time.
long story short it was a fun action movie, i think most of the cast did a great job. good action, nice to look at. lowkey had nothing to do with the comics, like at all, but still, it was very good for what it was. i like how it was definitely a continuation of the vibe of suicide squad, without really having anything to do with suicide squad. going forward, if there is a forward, we need to see lady shiva vs the birds of prey.

Birds of Prey is quite good. Good cast, fun style and some really great action bits. I don't really like talking shit about other movies to make comparisons, but I think this was the style/tone Suicide Squad was going for but never really got (to me anyway - that's a subjective thing). Or at least, it build off of and improved that style as TMQ says.
I understand why it's called "Birds of Prey: and Harley Quinn" since they were clearly hoping for more movies with them, but I think it's probably one of the main reasons that it didn't do too good moneywise. It'll be a shame if it doesn't get a sequel because there's good potential here.
It's weird because I like the various Batman and Batman-esque stuff but this is the first DC movie (not counting Joker) that I've seen since I think Wonder Woman? Tbh I think I like these movies better when they don't try to keep them all explicitly connected. This is a spin-off but I think you could easily watch this without watching Suicide Squad.
Here's hoping Wonder Woman 84 is also good.

The #1 movie in America, folks: Well, I suppose they 'fixed' Sonic. I hope the internet is happy that the movie will now be a bland bomb rather than a beautifully messy disaster. So I was very very wrong on the bomb part. Even though it was the right decision and clearly a very profitable one, I maintain that changing the design was the move of cowards. The Sonic movie will never have the staying power and cultural impact of the likes of Cats!

I watched Parasite twice over the past 2 weeks, really fucking good movie. I gave it a 4.5 initially, but a 5 upon rewatch. There is just so much subtle detail in the movie that is relevant later. For example, at the start we see a picture of the mother on the wall with the swinging ball thing that she later uses when they take over the house for the night. I also really loved how the Kim's entrance into the Park house was marked with the phone/doorbell thing and the same noise also marked the beginning of their downfall. Not to mention the painting we see Da-Song did at the beginning is pretty much the guy in the basement. I had issues with the pacing of the third act in my initial watch through, but I felt it was fine on my re-watch.
I initially missed some stuff in the original watch, e.g I didn't catch onto the use of height being used to represent class and I didn't realise the lever in the basement operated the cabinet, I thought it operated the stone slab door and thought it was a minor error (though it was more just I didn't pay attention).
I was lying back watching it the first time I watched, and jumped up when Moon-Gwang (the initial housekeeper) reveals the secret basement. Sadly I didn't get as tense when the doorbell/phone rang in that long scene the second time, but still great none-the-less. I also didn't expect Jessica to be the one to die out of her and Kevin.
The character development is amazing - I went from liking to hating to feeling sorry for Moon-Gwang, and began hating the poor mother and ended up liking her. Amazing storytelling and sublime music. I'm tempted to go watch it a third time but this time in the cinema. It might be recency bias, but I think it might be my favourite movie of all time (previously Fargo/Gone Girl), but definitely in my top 3. I also watched The Farewell recently, really well done movie. It's about a grandmother in China who gets cancer, and in their culture they believe the worry/stress kills the person so they often don't tell them. It's about the family staging a fake wedding so they can see her without revealing the secret. It's based on a true story (or a 'real lie', as the movie says). Partially in Mandarin, but really good.

Watched Onward a few days ago.
Thought It was decent. Definitely not the worst Pixar movie (like Cars 2). It was one of their meh work along with Bug's Life and Monster Inc since there wasn't anything goundbreaking in the story or characters.
On the other hand, I'm excited for Souls. Their second trailer is definitely much better than the other.

oof
I mean, it looks watchable, but it doesn't even remotely feel like Uncharted. I don't see Nathan Drake and Sully at all, I only see Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. It was so crucial to nail those two characters if they wanted the adaptation to feel authentic, but man, they didn't even try.
The movie seems to combine story elements and set pieces from several different games, while simultaneously being an origins story.
I wanted to like this, but it looks incredibly generic and feels nothing like the games. Too bad.

I only recently started playing the Resident Evil games a few months ago, but this movie seems crazily cheesy. From what I can see, it's essentially RE1+2 as a single movie. From what I've read, it intends to be faithful to the game plot but the acting just seems so cheesy. Also who the fuck cast Leon? Looks more like Carlos wtf is this shit lmao

I mean, the games are pretty cheesy too, that's one of the things I love about them. The trailer does look super trashy though, so I don't have too much confidence. I think Avan Jogia is pretty great, he's crazy charismatic and I absolutely loved him in Now Apocalypse (still not over the fact that that show got canceled after just one season 😔). He doesn't look like Leon from the games obviously, but from the types of characters he usually plays, I definitely see him more as Leon than Carlos.

At least the 'Jill sandwich' line won't be too out of place if the acting is as it seems .
I have to wonder what Mr X will look like.
I've never seen Jogia act, so holding out hope - but the physical similarities to Carlos are there lol. I just hope they make the sets as much of a character (much like how Parasite does with the house) as they are in the games. The Mansion in RE1 is by far the spookiest setting of any RE game I've played (on 5 now) despite being the most graphically restricted.
I like Neal McDonough, so it'll be interesting to see him as Dr Birkin.
