Whether they get hatred or nasty things said to them by fans, and / or they have suffered extreme brutality by the narrative. Not necessarily stan for them, but want to defend them in parts or protect them.
For me its alot of the children characters.

Daenerys Stormborn of the House Targaryen, the First of Her Name, the Unburnt, Queen of Meereen, Queen of the Andals and the Rhoynar and the First Men, Khaleesi of the Great Grass Sea, Breaker of Chains, and Mother of Dragons This, so hard. When I use to participate in book discussions I spent at least 90% of my time having to defend Dany. It was exhausting to say the least. It was usually from Jon or Stannis fans who felt threaten by her.

Only Cat. *shoves haters out of the Moon Door* Definitely Catelyn the most. I remember after first reading the books and hopping online how shocked I was at all the hate and blame she gets.

She does get a lot of hate. I remember this one thread where JQC blamed her for everything bad that had happened to Jon.

Catelyn, Robb, Ned, Sansa...who am I kidding? All the Starks.
And Davos. Even though I have not seen a lot of Davos hate.

Before I ever joined a forum to discuss the show/books Dany and Jon were my favorite characters, so I was bummed out the fanbase was so divided. And Jon is almost universally loved, so I feel much more protective over Dany. If it wasn't for the few poster's like you I would have given up discussing this series early on.

I've seen some nasty things directed to Brienne as well. That she is too ugly for Jaime, she's a cliche 'strong female character', is doing a very evil thing to Jaime atm (by bringing him to the BWB).
The show doesn't help at all. Her being mean to Pod and not talking to Sansa when the both of them were in King's Landing are simply inexcusable. But book Brienne? Yeah, I'll defend the hell out of her. She's a role model and one of the very few characters I could trust defending Arya and Sansa.
On a different scale, the Nights Watch. Yes, there are rapists and murderers. That should be remembered. But alot of people are in there because of the promise of food and shelter, may have committed a minor crime (such as theft) against nobility. I cringe whenever a character, who tends to be far more rich and wealthy (not from the North either) make dismissive comments against them. And they are literally all that is standing between beyond and the seven kingdoms. They deserve support, imo.

I have always felt protective about Arya. She has been in a horrible nightmare since Ned's execution (well, as all the Stark kids, of course). I feel her rage, her fear, her lost of identity as something very close to me as a reader. I don't know. Sometimes reading her chapters in the Riverlands I felt the need to hug her and tell her that everything will be fine (although it probably won't, this is GOT/ASOIAF after all).

I watched the end of season 5 with my friend last night (homegirl somehow managed to not know what happens at the end) and I had to explain to her why Stannis doesn't suck. Also Theon and Sansa. I'm the only one of my friends who loves them with all my heart.

As a Catelyn fan I feel like I should say Cat, but tbh I don't care when people give her shit. The character is above all that, that's how great she is. No, the character I feel most protective of is actually Sansa. She also gets a lot of shit, but she's essentially just a child and I hate it when people don't get how vulnerable and yet strong she is. I also get angry when people call Jon boring or one-dimensional.

@kairos, I never understood why people feel the need to give Sansa shit either because to go through all of the tormenting and emotional abuse in King's Landing and still survive through it knowing that the people you're surrounded by are more or less responsible for tearing your own family apart makes her one of the strongest characters in the series.

Basically, all of the female characters at one time or another. All were attacked so frequently and unfairly in the early years of the fandom. Now I feel the need to defend Starks (no, they're not simps), show Lannisters (no, they aren't white-washed...they're just more realistic than in the books), and Dany (no, she's not evil...she's just doing this all on intuition and dreams...girl deserves a break!)
