The thing is that it has to be done in a tasteful, respectful way that doesn't insult the viewers intelligence. I never said it wasn't okay for D&D to have rape in the show, they just tossed in a scene where Gilly gets nearly raped for no reason at all. We know that the Nights Watch has rapists in it. We know the Wall can be dangerous for a woman. In the books, Gilly and Sam are grieving for Maester Aemon Targaryen, and hence why they have sex (that, and their obvious romantic attraction). Wasn't that enough? Did we need more brutality? GRRM isn't perfect when it comes to rape. See: Lollys Stokeworth. But he never had Jaime rape Cersei, he never had Meera threatened and had gross men joke about raping her. The near rape was the catalyst for Sam bringing Gilly along with him to Oldtown. The Jaime/Cersei rape was the only rape I believe was handled poorly, and that's because it was treated like it wasn't rape. However, a lot of rapes that happened in the books didn't happen in the show, like Lollys, Kyra, and the girl in the Riverlands, I forget her name. Jeyne Pool's rape in the books was way worse than what the show did, and to imply that Jeyne was raped by dogs was completely unnecessary, and seemed to be presented for shock. The men at Crasters were rapists, so it was logical that they would attempt to rape Meera too. Yes but was it really necessary? They could have just have Sam say 'these men are dangerous, she is not safe here'. The audience already knows what kind of men are in NW

The men at Crasters were rapists, so it was logical that they would attempt to rape Meera too. Well, here's a good catalyst: Gilly wants to go. The promise of a better life for her child. So Castle Black needs a new maester, Sam volunteers and then says he'll take Gilly. Even if we are going to go by needing a catalyst: as established in the 'wars to come' that Gilly was on edge about Thorne. She's already in danger. With Craster's Keep... in the books, they stumble upon a group of Deserters, but they, with the exception of Coldhands (who kills them) they don't engage. It actually doesn't make much sense for them to linger literally through an entire night watching Craster's Keep. Summer being hurt was kind of flimsy excuse to stay around. Kyra, and the woman Ramsay hunts were mentioned in the show- Myranda tells Sansa before Ramsay marries her. I guess there is a massive difference between telling about a rape and actually showing it, or the graphic lead up to it (stripping of clothes, screams, etc) I think the woman in the Riverlands you might be thinking of is Pia. Her story is so sad

I'm sure you're familiar with "show, don't tell." I believe this applies.

It's the same reason we saw Robb's military campaign rather than just hearing about it and why we actually witnessed Theon's time with Ramsay.

It's the same reason we saw Robb's military campaign rather than just hearing about it and why we actually witnessed Theon's time with Ramsay. We didn't actually see Robb's campaign- battles were cut out. And 'show don't tell'... always disagreed with that sentiment. How effective was Oberyn telling Tyrion that story? Back to my point: the attempted rape scene was totally not needed.
