Well, (imo ) if an opinion is stated as fact, that is as negative and controversial as yours, it is far more likely to irritate and aggravate people than a positive one It's not that big of a deal. It's just kinda annoying to read stuff like that sometimes, and I really think a small "imo" would've helped a lot.

Dude, could you at least insert an "imho" somewhere inside that sentence. There are more than enough people (including me) who loved AFfC and ADwD as much as the first three books, so please don't state your own (rather controversial) opinion as a fact. It's aggravating to read stuff like this, a simple "in my opinion" would've worked wonders here. Sure, I'll edit it in. However, obviously I am not trying to represent that as a fact- people write like this all the time, no? For instance, just as "Season 3 is absolutely incredible" is obviously understood to be an opinion, so shouldn't this? Yeah it appears everywhere, all the time, with just about any personal judgement. I try to put in qualifiers , I find IMHO over used. Professional critics don't have to , and don't usually, state it since it is implicit in their role. Professional critics, most the time, do give a reasoned analysis for their opinions and most posters on topics don't.

I say what I'm about to say with the outmost respect for GRRM. After all, he brought us this story we all love and without him there wouldn't be the books, the show or this forum for that matter. Furthermore, I do agree with Neil Gaiman that GRRM is not our bitch. But as a fan, I can still say that I wanted him to succeed and unfortunately, it has been apparent for quite some time now that he won't. The show will spoil the ending. That's a fact. It is also a fact that GRRM had more than enough time to finish his magnum opus. But he didn't and this saddens me. I don't understand why he let this happen. It's none of my business what GRRM chooses to do with his time, but maybe he should have concentrated harder on finishing this saga, instead of writing and doing a million other things. Alas, it is what is is and we can't change it. Maybe I'm being too pessimistic here, but I don't count on him finishing this. Therefore, I'm glad that the show exists. I don't always like D&D's choices, but at this point I'm happy that at least I will get an ending from them. It would be cool if GRRM wrote some episodes for the final season/was heavily involved in its production. So at least he would get to tell the ending of his story in some way. It's plain and simple procrastination, which is why I don't feel sorry for him at all- he bought it upon himself. The show has also surpassed GRRM's quality due to the last 2 extremely mediocre books (imo), so, while I will definitely read the end of this series that I once loved so much, I won't really be anticipating them at all. Agreed. And I wouldn't worry about the "imo". It's obviously your opinion. Are we to type out "in my opinion" every time we post ffs?

I wouldn't say season 4 or season 5 were better than the books, but those were the two weakest books of the series by far. Let's begin with the fact that they needed, and apparently never got, a proper editing.

It's aggravating to read stuff like this, a simple "in my opinion" would've worked wonders here. Saying that AFFC and ADWD sucked donkey balls is not controversial. Because they did suck donkey balls. AFFC was a self-indugent exercise in world building which featured, among other conceptual dumpster fires, a POV character's trek through Westeros on a VERY IMPORTANT MISSION which the reader already knew was doomed from the start. Nice job creating dramatic tension! We also saw ye olde Renfaire language begin to creep into the prose which was nearly absent in the first works. I have heard it argued that AFFC was meant to showcase the horrors of war and its impact on the commoners. Fuck, if you didn't pick up on that from the first three books, I don't know what to tell you. ADWD was even worse in terms of literary worth, it's saving grace being the plot advanced at least a little. The explosion of nearly tangential POVs continues. The archaic language becomes ever more present in the universe. Parachuting Targs. Very very poor editing. Someone go back to The Windblown chapter and tell me how old the Girl General is. Sunset found her squatting in the grass? Well, Harper Collins found GURM squatting over his Word Star. People are overly generous when they say the reason the last two books seems inferior is because the first three books were so good. Truth is, if the first book in the series was of the same caliber as ADWD, ASOIAF never gets published and Martin's publisher tells him to go back to television. In my opinion.

I don't think ADWD and AFFC sucked donkey balls @atreyu but I understand your POV. I think most (not all) ASOIAF fans would agree that the first three books are collectively better than the last two books. I don't think D&D thought "wow I can't wait to adapt AFFC" before season 1. No, they were excited to show off Ned's death, RW, Stannis/Renley, Kings Landing politics, enhance non POV characters (Tywin, Robb, Tyrells, etc.) There is a reason why D&D skipped Brienne's, Tyrion and Sansa's flat plotlines from 4 and 5.
It's not that you can't enjoy those "flat" plotlines because it throws you in Westeros, but most of it is not riveting material.
I also think this is understated: ADWD ended with way too many cliffhangers and since it takes GRRM 5-10 years to write the next book, it's pretty damn frustrating.
Thank God for the show. It's going to wrap up things for us nicely.

Would anyone believe me if I said the next ASOIAF book was coming out in October? Because it is.
