In a way it was handled like Robert's death where he says, "Give me something for the pain and let me die," and then we only have his death related to us/Ned later on in the episode. Here we have Stan say, "Go on do your duty," and only have his death confirmed to us via Mel's reaction to Jon asking about him.
It could and probably should have been clearer of course...but then people still think Syrio's alive.

I found that comment to be EXTREMELY odd. This is the guy who directed Catelyn's death and no one saw worse things before dying than her. And we did see her death in great detail. The rationale as I see it was that, since his death was sortof a mercy, we were spared from seeing it. But yeah, if it's caused this much confusion really they ought to have just shown it. Almost like how we did not see Maester Luwin's death on screen since Osha was giving him a merciful death. The comment was odd considering he directed the Red Wedding as well. I do think given the focus on Stannis, who probably had the most screen time this season then he has ever had, I do think he warranted an onscreen death (I think because his death was off screen is why my husband's boss insists he's coming back) but we might get a bit in the season 6 opener of Brienne burying him or something.

If Bri was willing to bury those tavern girls who "lay with lions" back in ep. 210, she'd damn sure bury Stan.

The reason it looks weird to me is in the editing.
We get an established shot of Brienne standing about ten feet away from Stannis. Stannis says his line about duty, then Brienne draws her sword - making no move towards Stannis. Then we get a closeup of Stannis while presumably Brienne moves forward but she's out of the shot and Stannis' eyes move around oddly. Then he looks up and presumably Brienne is standing over him. She briefly swings Oathkeeper.
This scene needed at least one of the following:
1. An establishing shot of Brienne moving closer. 2. The sound of Brienne's footsteps in the snow moving closer to Stannis while we looked at him. 3. A visible shadow/lighting change on Stannis. (This would have also been interesting from a symbolic standpoint. Stannis cast his shadow on Renly, Brienne casts hers on Stannis.)
It's poor, awkward editing.

I really don't think focusing the scene on Stannis and his reaction to what was going on was a poor editing choice at all. It was Dillane's swan song and allowing his performance to breathe there was the best part of the scene. People's issue with the flow of the scene as I see it is that we didn't see him die. Which is more a perceived problem with the writing than the editing.

I still think it was weird. Were they even in the same place when they shot it? I don't want to watch the scene again but I feel like there was no wide shot of both of them. I could be wrong though of course.

EDIT: And this. postimg.org/image/hsjr89vdj/full/
These two setups with both of them in the shot were utilized as often as their individual coverage throughout the scene.

Everyone! I know that I have been mighty crazy bitch difficult lately and I'm sorry. My confidence in the show was broken and I am taking it very very badly. I've been trying to keep my ranting to minimum here in the last two days because I saw I was making it difficult for others (I see that I'm crazy so I guess according to Locke from Lost, I'm not really crazy) and that is the last thing I want to do here. I am disgruntled, but in my defense, look what they've done to Stannis fans So I ranted on my site instead and people who also disliked the finale should find something to enjoy there: cinematiccorner.blogspot.com/2015/06/188-goodbye-my-king-f-u-thrones-links.html#But I also did this big Stannis tribute in this post using a lot of his moments on the show (in the form of my Stannis per episode gifs) in the middle of the post - it came out nicely in a horribly, horribly sad kind of way. I'm gonna limit my bitterness to my tweets and blog so that I wouldn't disturb anyone here. It's supposed to be a positive place. Even though they have ripped my heart out.

I knew they were going for an Eowyn moment with that line. I'm sure I said that somewhere. Although maybe it was not about Stannis

That was a lovely Stannis tribute Admin - and I think a lot of your show criticisms are valid. It's good you use your talent at writing to express that pain and frustration. I know I've argued both sides a lot (I tend to be a fence sitter which is annoying) but overall I do agree the sudden downfall of Stannis was badly done from a bigger picture standpoint. It seems like they built his story up beautifully over a long period of time and then hacked it up in the final two episodes of the season very abruptly. I *think* they were trying to go for sudden tragedy but it came across wrong for some reason I can only attribute to some missed cues needed and rushed writing. We should give Mr. Martin a little more credit as he did warn this might happen with the show a couple of seasons back I believe. That butterfly effect thing is happening and they seem to be struggling to make the puzzle pieces match up correctly this season. It was never going to align right simply because so much had to be cut from the massive books, but what they did put in got changed so dramatically for the Winterfell arc, I think it got lost along the way. Stannis had a solid story and while many have predicted he dies in the books as well, we don't know how he dies or under what circumstances yet until we have the author's version in our hands. I never thought Stannis was going to be a glorious hero king who reunited the Seven Kingdoms .... but I certainly never expected him to go out the way they portrayed him on the show. I'm sorry they did that sati, and you've held it together really well all things considered. You're a great fan and while we continue to banter on here in this place you gave us, it's ok to be disenchanted with the show - really. I don't think anyone blames you at all.

I love(d ) his armour... No one on the show ever dressed so fittingly. - The following is an extract from the script of Series 6, episode 9. Davos Seaworth, to Wyman Manderly upon finding the body of Stannis "Alas, poor Stannis! I knew him, Lord Wyman; a fellow of infinite wrath, of most excellent fancy; he hath rode into battle a thousand times; and now, how abhorred in my imagination it is! My gorge rises at it. Here hung this jaw that hath grit I know not how oft. Where be your gibes now? Your scowls? Your salted water? Your flashes of badassery, that were wont to set the fandom on a roar?"
