I agree that D&D made good dialogue for Stephen and created many good Stannis-esque lines, but I still think they didn't understand his character completely. I'm sure that's the closest we'll come to agreeing on this. So let's just and leave it at that, I suppose.

D&D failed to understand the character of Stannis Baratheon. Period.Meanwhile they ignore the negative traits and faults of Tyrion and Daenerys and to lesser extent Cersei and Jon. Cersei is still an asshole, but not as much as in the books. Not to press this too much further because we're not likely to agree...but then how do you explain all of the show-only Stan scenes and lines that they wrote that most Stan-fans seem to like? Much of his dialogue in eps. 205 ("most of those lords should consider themselves lucky I don't hang 'em for treason"), 208 ("I do like dogs, good animals, loyal...but we ate them"), 210 ("I see fire..."), 301 ("heard you were dead...), 303 ("I'm not so easily killed men have been trying for years") was original to the show and written by them. Not to mention his scenes in 410, 501, 502 and 503 were largely made up of original dialogue.
I always felt that D and D were good at writing dialogue for Dillane and understood the particular brusque rhythm that he brought to the character. A line like, "Why should I spare the son of some tavern slut Robert bedded one drunken night?" from ep. 308 is a perfect example of this. As they do with actors like Charles Dance and Lena Headey, this line was designed for Dillane's unique line delivery and fit with Dillane's reading of the character of Stan perfectly.
So I don't think it's quite so easy to say something like that and just settle it by saying "period". Particularly if you rewatch past seasons with his later actions in mind, you'll find they've been setting it up for some time. "You will betray your family, you will betray everything you hold dear. But it will be worth it..." was in ep. 210 remember.
They did give him many good lines and scenes, but what I believe it's more likely that they didn't care much about Stannis instead of just simple hatred for the character, maybe thinking he is a boring and uninteresting character. They saw the opportunity to get rid of him in season 5 and took it.

They saw the opportunity to get rid of him in season 5 and took it. I don't think they found him boring or anything like that because he was utilized a ton in s5 and they've said they enjoy writing for Dillane on the commentaries more than once. I think it's more that they had to resolve that battle in s5, given the setup for it and so the stakes for Sansa's escape would be higher. Since I always felt we should've found out who won at Winterfell with certainty in ADWD, I don't resent that choice at all tbh.
But I guess this is more the stuff of one of the Stan-threads. So how about that SDCC, folks?

Of course Stephen is still in his cave Hey, at least Conleth's out of his more and more lately. Which shows that if he can do it, maybe one day Stephen will too. I think to get Stephen anywhere near a large convention there would have to be....nope, a gun won't work. Money won't work. Me naked won't work... He's never coming to San Diego

I'm psyched about Glen being there. First time too, yes?
I had a dream about him this week but I'll write more on that in my today's RF IIRC yes. It's strange he hasn't done it before really because he's a good fit for that sort of thing. He's enthusiastic about the show, has good rapport with other cast members and can speak about it all very well.
I just wish Nathalie was there.

I think Stephen hates every single place except for his bedroom where he reads books laying next to the happiest woman on Earth, the trains (where he also reads the books) and the theater stage (where I'm sure he is pretending to be reading books during intermission so that no one speaks to him)

I get the feeling he may have asked Neil Marshall for some in ep. 209 hence the birth of Stannis Baratheon the Front-Line-General. Really. I thought I saw his name there too.Oh good, for the second I was like "how strong is this drink?!" Maybe it's that other Comic Con? The one Pedro and Richard did once That could be it. Either way, Glen is a good fit for that sort of stuff, so it's stupid he hasn't done SDCC. And Nathalie...I know I'm already spoiled with Sophie and Carice being there but...Nathalie...

That's hot ^^ Although I think I read somewhere it was Marshall who suggested Stannis to fight in the episode. But I love that, I'm not sure who said it, that Stephen and Liam lit up when they were told about riding horses and leading an army in season 4 finale I'm sure Sophie will have the same hairstyle as Nat again, as she did in previous Con. She's like real life Sansa, modelling her hair after has heroines

Is this Conleth Hill's first time on Comic-Con?

It looks like we will have more ladies than men at this Comic-Con. I am not familiar with CCs outside of Game of Thrones, but is that unusual? I like it, for what that is worth. I am quite excited to hear from that lineup.

GrrM said it was Neil Marshall's idea on his commentary but it's just a hunch that I have that Stevey D. asked him, "Can I kill a few of them?" since a lot of theatre guys are into swordplay and whatnot because they learn fencing with the Shakespearian stuff. So I think that Dillane may have wanted to do a bit of that.

I would like to hear D&D answer a question about why they think other people like Stannis in the books. They probably know. In some "Inside the Episode" videos they described many of his qualities, so they should at least understand why many people like him. However, they might not agree with them and think he's a boring and ruthless character. As much as I love Stannis, his love in the fandom is overblown. Before season 2 I remember that his fans were very few and most people just didn't give a shit about him, even among the readers. It was only after Blackwater that "Stannis the Mannis" was born and he got this huge fanbase, and still only popular on the internet. The only two people I know that have only read the books - and have never watched the show - despise Stannis.

I would like to hear D&D answer a question about why they think other people like Stannis in the books. Why would someone ask them that? (If they were going there, that is, which they're not because they're still finishing up writing s6. Unless people are blaming them for making SDCC happen earlier this year...which I wouldn't be surprised at tbh ).
But seriously. What would someone expect them to say? The idea that they hate Stannis has always been a silly one. Maybe they don't hero-worship him like some (which might come from knowing how his story ends while we don't) but as I argued previously (IIRC in this very thread), they've always been good at coming up with show-only Stannis scenes and lines that Stannis fans have liked (in eps. 205, 208, 301, 308, 401, 402, 403 and 407 in particular). I'm sure the line "Go on, do your duty," in ep. 510 is show-only as well for instance because I have a strong suspicion that Stan will die without a POV present and won't be killed by anyone significant in TWOW...So why they should have to appease "Mannis=Chuck Norris" fans with some sort of forced, silly platitude or another, I haven't the slightest.

If Stannis dies offscreen in TWoW, I expect it to be like Yoren's death. Truly epic.
