I'm afraid to post my review here... Why? Because I was planning to give it an 8 or 9. This is nowhere near as good as Watchers on the Wall, Blackwater or Rains of Castamere. Those are the only episodes that got a 10 from me. Well, here it goes. The episode was hyped as the best GoT episode ever, so my expectations were extremely high.. and I was kinda disappointed. Here it goes. I thought that Meereen was good this episode. It's always fun to see Tyrion use his wits.. and finally good to see Dany getting a top adviser. The conversation between Dany and Tyrion was great.. except I felt that Emilia Clarke was mediocre at best in this scene. The wheel speech was quite forced, but Tyrion absolutely nailed that scene. Cersei prison scenes were top class, Lena Headey was so good in this episode, easily the best performance in the entire episode. The despair, the anger, tremendous stuff! Qubyrn was good, Cleganebowl is getting closer and closer. No Stannis no party. The scene between Sansa and Theon might be one of my favorites this season. Of course it doesn't beat the confession at the heart tree, but it's good enough. Sophie and Alfie have been so good this season. Reek is starting to think more like Theon and that's good to see. The scene was so emotional, first Sansa's anger and then realization struck: Bran and Rickon are still alive. Someone call the Greatjon so that he can bring Rickon. Roose didn't give the rue the day speech, but at least his scene about tactics was quite good. I'm praying that Ramsay's guerrilla tactics don't work on Stannis. He's trying to start a mutiny. Ah.. Hardhome. The negotiation scene with Jon & the wildlings was fantastic. I loved it. It was great to see leaders from different clans and some were ready to co-operate. Jon's speech was great. Then came the army of the dead.. I have never seen a got scene so hyped up, so I was expecting it to be superb. But for some reason it wasn't. Like Fire and Blood said, there was some quite floppy and queer camerawork. Some scenes felt like they were on a fast forward and the fight was too quick at times. We got more spooky scary skeletons. Then the WW came and saved the day. I loved the fight between Jon and a White Walker. That WW looked fantastic. The slaughter was quite brutal, as it should be. The death of the random wildling woman (I don't remember her name) was quite sad. Wun Wun is always a plus. For some reason, I was disappointed with the Night's Kings, he didn't look so kingly and I liked his season 4 look better. Don't get me wrong, I liked the Hardhome scene, it was intense, but IMO it didn't live up to the hype and somethings just didn't work. Also Kristofer Hivju and Kit Harrington deserve a special mention. Those 2 were solid. After re-evaluating I decided to give it a solid 9. It was action packed and probably in the top 3 episodes of season 5.

I think it's always difficult to watch something that everyone is saying is "AMAZING" and not be somewhat let down. That's why I like to watch stuff in real-time as much as possible since I can never appreciate something that has an insane amount of hype attached to it and get the same reaction.

Some points you mentioned regarding the wights and the sometimes shaky camera occured to me on the second watch too, but they bothered me not enough to give it less than a 10. And I don't even like fighting scenes that much.

my review as well as my others for this season can be found here hitsville.co.uk/tagged/tv 10/10 for me. brilliant!!! tiny little quibble would be I wish they'd gone slow with zombies and emphasised their weapons couldn't kill them so they had to turn to fire but that's just nitpicking. great ep!!!!!!

One thing I wanted to praise about the episode that I haven't seen anyone mention specifically yet was the choice in tone for the moments just after Jon shatters the white walker with Longclaw. It was an absolutely beautiful shot. And of course, it's a celebratory moment for the audience. But then that shot pulls back, and beautiful sad music starts. Jon vomits. That's the moment you realize it's a complete and total route, and the best anyone can do is escape.

Actually, I read the director's comments on making this episode, and he said that particular shot was the backbone for the entire sequence. That he visualized that shot of Jon on his knees in the snow before everything else, and used it as the 'spine' to build from...to make sure that this felt like a massacre, and not a heroic battle sequence. Everything he did, he went back to that shot to make sure it all fell in line. I would say that he was extremely successful and hit the emotion just right.

I personally liked this better than WotW and much more than Blackwater.
Here is why:
1. The back and forth between Cersei sniveling and the battle was/is too much of a distraction and annoying. It's about like watching a football match and right before Italia makes a goal (sorry chose my fav.)the network decides to break away to talk about toothpaste.
2. I felt the music in WotW was bizarre, and as much as I liked the Ghost scene it seemed that Ghost took out a couple people and laid down for a "cat" nap. There are some great moments in the WotW, but as a whole I did not like it better, but I do think it is better than BW.
3. This is probably the cement for me. We have almost nothing on the WW/Others in the books, and this is one hell of an entrance. I also enjoyed the wights, because the army of the dead that Sam sees initially reminded me of a pathetic 1970s zombie movie. My initial thoughts were "how the hell is that going to beat westeros". These new improved wights (yes I know some on the other forum are irate about it) look pretty dam awesome and actually instill into the audience a sense that a threat really does exist.
Also. The scene kind of leans to an idea I have had about Jon's final scene.
I am not sure if everyone has read it, and I don't want to assume so because this is a show thread but SPOILER
SPOILER
When Jon feels "only the cold..." I have leaned on two ideas, and they don't need to be mutually exclusive. First, I am certain that Ghost is on scene, which diverts the attackers and why Jon does not feel the 4th. I won't go into that here. Now obviously he feels the snow. But I also have the tendency to think that "only the cold" is Martin's clue that the Others have arrived. Sort of like in the King Killer Chronicles and blue light, but I won't add to that in case people have not read them.
That scene suggests that the Others are close and ready to strike. It is possible that D&D have them harry the wildlings/NW back to the gate. My suspicion is that when Jon is attacked, at this particular moment the Others have arrived at CB. Now obviously I could be wrong, but Jon being stabbed while simultaneously three horn blasts signify the Other's arrival....that would end the season on a major "HOLY SHIT" note. This is not completely guess work, because I feel that Martin's "only the cold..." actually suggests that they have arrived. Ghost is also there, and I suspect he aids regardless.

I hope this happens and Melisandre shows up and fight them in some cool way not with the power of boobs I wonder if whatever magic Mel has makes her immune from wightification. That'd be pretty cool. They really need to tone down the sexuality aspect of Melisandre if they want people to take her more seriously on the show. I'm no prude and she's a beautiful actress but it seems to diminish her actual powers in my opinion. I've listened to quite a few reviewers lately and most seem to focus only on the fact that she's trying to have sex with everyone and they think her magic is a sham. Maybe that's an intentional distraction on the show writers part but I find it frustrating because she was a character I disliked in the books too - but only because I didn't trust her and feared her power a little - not because she was banging Stannis. IF in fact it's going to be Melisandre who resurrects Jon (and it's looking pretty good that's the plot hints at this point), they need to change her direction and her tactics. Maybe this next scene will reveal that when she finally figures out her visions have been full of shit and she takes off to try and fix her mistakes? EDIT: I also think Mel's immunity to cold has some important role to play in the north and how to help defeat the Others - but I despise the "Lord of Light" routine to justify it!

Hardhome had 7 million viewers, and we are just talking about the original airing. Wonder what will say the people who claimed the show was doomed after episode 6

Wonder what will say the people who claimed the show was doomed after episode 6 Those people were retarded because even with it's lowest view count (on Memorial Day weekend which they usually skip) it still has more people watching than anything else on television so how can they even say it's doomed with a straight face? It's just dumb and wishful thinking on the part of haters who gonna hate no matter what. I'm pretty annoyed today because there are very few good video reviewers out there on youtube and it's surprising to me. There's a lot of solo guys who are smart and fun to watch, but the so-called 'big name' reviewers with their fancy broadcasting set ups and roundtable discussions SUCK so bad, I mean it's like chewing on chalk listening to some of those guys blabber on about "OMG why didn't the giant turn into a wight that would have been so much more badass!!" ..... VOMIT.

Cenk is just an ass and Ana doesn't say much (although whenever I watch TYT, she's usually the standout).

I've been scouring the youtubeverse to see what others thought of Hardhome since a lot of reviews this season have been lackluster or boring. There really just are not a lot of great reviewers out there unfortunately. Those guys on What The Flick are absolutely the worst. They thought the white walker who came through the fire was Tywin ressurected or some shit. My ....god. wtf. Seriously.

I personally don't get the purpose of watching a show that you think is garbage for the purpose of ridiculing it and stating how much you hate it. I don't get it. I don't have that sort of time to waste. Sort of like the people who hated Transformers 1 and 2, but watched 3 &4 and still complained about the same things. Oh my Wun Wun as a wight....really. There are some people upset that the WW did not kill Jon, and that it is plot armor that Jon is alive after the fight.....

I agree. I don't want to get into the aspects of the hate for that episode, but it is wishful thinking to argue this. I personally don't get the purpose of watching a show that you think is garbage for the purpose of ridiculing it and stating how much you hate it. I don't get it. I don't have that sort of time to waste. Sort of like the people who hated Transformers 1 and 2, but continued watch 3 &4 and still complained of the same things. Oh my Wun Wun as a wight....really. There are some people upset that the WW did not kill Jon, and that it is plot armor that Jon is alive after the fight.....Well, it is That's not exactly a shade, though, because pretty much the entire cast of main characters are still alive because of plot armour Dam. I must have plot armor, I am 33 and still alive .
