It's been two days and I'm STILL so disappointed. I never thought I'd dislike something from the main trilogy so much. And my clown ass bought tickets to see it again with family tomorrow when presale first came out so I have to sit through it again.

I guess this and the GoT leaks are lessons that knowing what happens in advance doesn't necessarily make it any better when it's released.

Back to the pacing, but I think the film feels like two separate films. You have the first half, crazy fast paced with scenes that feel very disjointed and cut and pasted together. The weakest part of the film, though it has some cool moments, still looks stunning (the whole film is really a visual treat) and still has some fine acting work by both Ridley and Driver. Hen you have the second half which is much slower, more drawn out and better thought out all around (i’d say from maybe around escaping Kylo’s ship? Which, by the by, I loved Rey jumping out onto the Falcon). The final showdown was very well done even if that plot was not something i like myself, the way it was executed in that showdown was great and for that whole sequence i forgot how disappointed i had been by the rest of the movie. It was almost like the first half was the backpedalling to undo The Last Jedi and the second half was a race to round off the story. Also, “I AM THE SPY!” And, i mentioned that the Last Jedi took place over too short a time span but holy hell they never learn do they? 16 hours to visit all those planets and do all that stuff? Bloody hell

They were pretty much exactly spot on, although the earlier leaks just had Ben getting tossed down the hole never to be seen again, then later the leak came out about the kiss so we knew he crawled out only to die again.

So, I saw Rise of Skywalker and kind of liked it ... but man, does it have problems. When we first heard Palpatine's voice in the trailers, I really hoped it would turn out to be some kind of evil force ghost situation, or maybe even a clone like in the Timothy Zahn books. Palpatine actually surviving the destruction of the second Death Star was worst case scenario for me, and overall, that was my biggest issue with the storytelling in this movie. It felt super cheap and fanservice-y ... and the fact that they didn't give any explanation as to how he survived made it worse. Another thing I didn't like, Rey being his granddaughter. It feels so much like Cursed Child, in that it takes the main villain of the entire series, who in the original work was portrayed as extremely asexual, and reveals that he was apparently getting it on behind the scenes after all. I imagine old Sheev texting his booty call in the middle of the night, like "Wanna witness the firepower of my fully armed and operational battle station?" Really didn't need that whole thing. Rey actually being "nobody", who at the end chooses to live as a Skywalker, would have been more meaningful storytelling, in my opinion. The first half of the movie was a mess. They introduced a bunch of new characters that did nothing for me. I honestly couldn't get invested at all until the moment Leia died, but I was feeling it from that point on. All the stuff between Rey and Kylo was great, and, even though I didn't like the twist, the actual scenes between Palpatine and Rey were excellent as well. Not gonna lie, there were definitely a bunch of scenes that made me cry, and made me cry hard. Chewie receiving the news of Leia's passing was absolutely heartbreaking, it was so well done. Poor Chewie outliving all of his friends ... his family. The scene between Kylo and Han was great too, especially Han's "I know.". Rey hearing the voices of the Jedi from the past ... so good. And the ending on Tatooine was absolutely perfect. No matter the problems I had with the movie as a whole, I don't think there could have been a more powerful way to end this new trilogy. I lost it when the ghosts of Luke and Leia appeared, it felt like such a beautiful end to thes stories of these two iconic characters, whose births and deaths we have witnessed. The entire movie was worth it just for that scene. I absolutely loved it. Overall, I'm very conflicted. It's definitely super disappointing that the movie tries so hard to contradict and/or retcon The Last Jedi, just to appease the fans. Also, the storytelling overall I thought was lackluster, and the vast amounts of fanservice felt way too meta and pretty cheap for the most part. But there is still a lot of stuff here that really worked for me, and scenes that made me feel. And for that, I can't bring myself to be too angry at it. It's the weakest out of the three for sure, but I definitely didn't hate it.

It's the weakest out of the three for sure, but I definitely didn't hate it. Great post, and pretty much agree with you. I also feel like i dislike it less than my initial reaction suggests, and at least some of my disappointment was due to rather high expectations, having lvoed the previous films. The implausability of Palps is just above and beyond. Not only does he survive a fall down that damn shaft, plus the inceration by flames which reach as far up the shaft as the throne room where Vader is standing, but he also is either fished out by some random imperial who gets him off the DS before it explodes....or he also somehow survives the explosion....i mean i know this is fantasy but come on! (i haven’t watched Clone Wars or Rebels yet but i know Darth Maul somehow survives there, hence showing up in Solo...not a fan of that either, but even that is more believable than this). Some kind of cloning procedure as you say could work. And might even be supported by the film itself when you think about the Jar of Snokes we see on the planet. The Emperor may have “died” but left orders for some kind of artificial restoration kf his body or something. Whatever, makes more sense than him surviving anyway! But, if he had to survive, i don’t mind him having a daughter. I don’t think he was presented as asexual. He is barely a character until RotJ, and even then we see him only briefly. Nothing he does suggests him being asexual as far as i recall. Are you talking strictly of the movies or some outside stuff too? That would explain why i don’t see it anyway omg, that is going to be my dirty talk now, thank you so much Second half was definitely better, although yes, none of the new characters in this instalment made any impression. Jannah was so much of a non-entity i had to look up her name afterwards because i couldnt remember hearing it in the film. AND THEY STUCK A BUCKET ON KERI RUSSEL’S HEAD. THIS IS NOT OKAY! Although, the little alien was admittedly adorable and got lots of laughs in my cinema. The absolute shafting of Rose was painful and sad though, especially after JJ Abrams came out seeming so supportive and claiming she was one of the best things about TLJ. Guess not good enough that you don’t cave to the right wing trolls, bigots and incels. Also wtf was he doing with Finn’s love interests? Throughout the trilogy we have had Rey, Rose, Jannah and Poe teased with none of them followed through, and the Rose/Jannah stuff just totally unceremoniously dropped (I think Rose and Finn got maybe one line of dialogue between them here when he said he wasn’t boarding the ship?) I never really saw any romantic potential between Rey and Finn either so what we got in tROS felt really forced for me there. I of course support Finn and Poe and thats my head canon. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver really were the stars of this trilogy, just fabulous. Chewie finally got his medal

(Spoilers I guess but I'm assuming anyone reading this thread has either seen TROS or doesn't care so no spoiler tags needed) Chris Terrio interviewSo um.. I didn't want to go here because this line of thinking is pretty much always obnoxious and overly dismissive, but yeah I don't think these guys understood The Last Jedi. Like I know I'm baiting the "To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand The Last Jedi" spiel but I don't think I can put it any other way. Either that or they recieved instructions from above on what to do and he's defending them, but that seems a tad too conspiratorial for me. But anyway to walk away from TLJ and think the most disappointing thing for Rey to hear about her parents is "they're junk traders!??" is a tragic misreading of not only the movie but her character overall (which makes no sense to me since JJ CREATED HER)
The interviews Terrio (and JJ) have been doing lately are very enlightening, particularly when they give this sort of answer.

Terrio and JJ retconning (yes, no matter what they say, they didn't elaborate, they retconned) her parents is one of the worst mistakes they made.

I saw TROS. I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. JJ Abrams is overrated. It had parts that worked and parts that didn't work. Basil hit the nail on the head, so I don't want to repeat his excellent post. I'll do a rundown of what worked and didn't work. What worked: As awkward as the scenes looked, how they handled Leia worked. Adam Driver's performance Daisy Ridley's performance The return of Han Chewie throughout the whole thing Little alien dude-who was voiced by the actress that played Moaning Myrtle in HP Keri Russell's character
What didn't work: The return of Palpatine Stating that Luke and Leia felt like he had something to do with all of this but they never mention it in previous films The big plot of Finn's with something I need to tell Rey and he never tells her (JJ Abrams later says at screening it's to tell her he's force sensitive...um, why was that dropped in the film???) They had no idea what to do with Poe or Finn Sidelining Rose. Ret-conning TLJ It would have been better that Rey was the child of no one special Ben Solo's death
The Mandalorian was MUCH BETTER overall then what JJ Abrams did with this trilogy. What a waste.

Dear Disney:
Next time you plan to release a trilogy of movies, knowing before you do anything that it will be a trilogy, first and foremost, find a writer or team of writers to develop the whole damn story before you film anything. The story doesn't have to be set in stone, but at least have an idea of what story you want to tell, that way, even if you have different directors for each film, the overall product will be coherent and the movies won't spend half their runtime undoing what the previous film did. That way you won't have new plot-twists every five seconds.
Also, it's wonderful that you added more female characters, but to do it just to show how straight Finn and Poe are is insulting. Next time make them wear "no-homo" T-shirts and be done with it.
And please, focus on telling a good story and forget what online fans think they want, because every fan has a different idea of what the perfect Star Wars movie is and if you try to please them you'll end up with a messy script that just doesn't make sense.

Part of it is apparently due to the script being too similar to the Mandalorian, with person X watching over a force sensitive on a remote planet, or something (please, no direct spoilers, i still haven’t seen it and this vague summary is not really a spoiler). Not sure i buy that, they would surely have noticed that long before now. But i have also heard there has been a lot of draaaaaama behind the scenes too. There are apparently rewrites going on with the scripts. McGregor is rumoured to have been unhappy. Other shenanigans. If it doesnt pick back up soon i suspect it never gets made. The crew need to move on to other projects, they aren’t getting paid to be on indefinite leave. McGregor may be unavailable due to other comittments. A KK’s contract end is also looming
