I'm not saying Billy is redeemed, but everybody hated Steve in season one, even though they plant the seed for his redemption arc at the end of season one. This is something similar to how they handled Billy this year. I rewatched season one right before this one and I couldn't help but notice the parallels. As for why Billy focused on Steve, I think it's because he possibly has feelings for him. If he was dealing with repressed feelings and self-loathing that could help explain his lashing out. I felt some strong homoerotic undertones from Billy toward Steve during the basketball and shower scenes. Billy was both mean and playful towards him at the same time. He's showing off for Steve. Hmm, I'd like that! Didn't his dad also call him a fag? That'd be interesting if they go there.

I can't remember if he specifically called him that but I like how that scene explained why Billy spends so much time lifting weights. I hope they explore Billy's relationship with his dad more in season 3, there's a lot of potential there.

I didn’t hate Steve in season one, I thought he was very likeable by the end. He did one truly awful thing (spray painting about Nancy) but other than that he wasn’t exactly someone I could hate. Agree about the possibility of Billy having feelings for Steven and those driving the rivalry and tension between them. I thought everyone would catch that And yep his dad definitely calls him a fag. Whether that is because Billy is actually gay, or because being called that is such a generic but hurtful insult I don’t know. Although the overcompensating by immersing himself in hyper mascul8nity would fit with him being gay

I didn't hate Steve in season one - even within the season he's doing good stuff by the end. Basically after his fight with Jonathan is when his redemption begins. Fuck Tommy and Carol though. Also did US schools in the 80s really make their students play basketball with no shirt? That was just bizarre. No, students played with their shirts on. I had a crush on a basketball player at that time and trust me if he played without a shirt on, I would have died on the stands. One thing is for certain, Steve is a terrible fighter. But he is a great lover. In all seriousness, DaveyJoe, you might be on to something that Billy might be gay and have feelings for Steve.

Did anybody else notice Max taping up her skateboard near the end of the season? I'm assuming Billy broke it after she disobeyed him and hung out with Lucas again. It could have been a deleted scene or another example of them trying to maximize efficient and subtle storytelling with the new characters. Either way I thought it was a nice touch.

I did see that scene but completely missed the connection that Billy could have broken it...good catch!

They both work so well together. One of the best discoveries this season was how well Joe Keery and the kid actors work together. I really hope the show can find a believable way to keep Steve involved with the kids for season 3.

I really hope the show can find a believable way to keep Steve involved with the kids for season 3. We’ll in the event of more eerie shit going down Steve has shown potential to be their go to for “adult” help if they are scared to tell Joyce or Hopper I suppose. ”babysitting” won’t really cut it for long, if at all, considering the ages of the actors and characters. Not to mention the total lack of babysitters or any other supervision throughout the show. I really want Lucas’ little sister to be back though. Savage take down of Lucas’ “nerd friends” she should square off against Lyanna Mormont

stoneheartsrevenge, We need to see more of Lucas's sister and his family. Same with Dustin's mom! I grew up in the 80's. I didn't have that much freedom like these kids do. My brothers were in high school then and believe my Mom knew where they were!
