I think Atreus has officially replaced Clementine as my favourite kid character in a video game. He is freaking adorable and so well written. I also love how he was implemented into the gameplay, he's saved my ass on more than one occasion. You really get the impression that he grows throughout the course of the journey, not only as a person, but as a warrior as well, and watching him kick ass gives you a really weird sense of parental pride.

I finished God of War. So, Atreus is freaking Loki. Holy shit. I mean, I had a feeling. There were several subtle hints throughout the game, for example how they were referring to his mother only by her nickname Fey (Loki's mother's name was Laufey), and when Atreus found out that he is a God, he started talking about turning into animals. Still, the reveal was incredibly powerful, and in retrospect gives so much more weight, depth and significance to the journey we just went through with him ... and the road that lies ahead. Especially with knowledge about the mythology, and the things that Loki will do, it kind of blows my mind to think about.
One of those things ... Jörmungandr, the Midgard serpent, is Loki's son, who was sent back through time after the cataclysmic battle between him and Thor during Ragnarök. That's why he was friendly to Atreus and helped him and Kratos, because he recognized Loki, his father.
There is so much more to this story than meets the eye. I feel like once the trilogy is finished and the entire story has been told, going back to this game will be mindblowing. So many things will only make sense in retrospect, and it will become clear how much foreshadowing to later evens they were doing in this one.
The last battle against Baldur was incredible. The way Freya was desperately screaming and begging for the fighting to end was really powerful and heartwrenching. I almost wish there had been an option to not kill Baldur. That's why for the first five minutes or so, I was not really fighting back, just dodging and trying to survive. Freya is a really interesting character to me and it would bum me out so hard if she ended up being an antagonist in the next game, or if they had Kratos kill her. I'm afraid that's exactly where the story's going though, and I really hope they surprise me in that regard.
But of course, it had to happen. Baldur's death is what sets in motion the events that lead to Ragnarök. The game takes some liberties with the mythology, but I think it's safe to assume that this is where the story is heading. We are going to see Ragnarök, and Atreus (aka Loki) will be involved. Perhaps Loki will fight alongside the jötunns against the Gods, like it was prophesied.
I gotta say, I really appreciate the way the game explored all the atrocities that were comitted by Thor and Odin against Giants. When Kratos and Atreus reached Jötunheim at the end of the game, and when they were standing on the summit of the mountain, looking across the land which was covered with the corpses of countless slaughtered Giants ... it sent fucking chills down my spine. It's hard to put into words, but it really made me feel something there, something profound. In general, I really love the way the Norse mythology was depicted in this game. You get the distinct feeling that this is a world with rich lore and history, and you're walking amongst the remnants of a dead culture. As the game progresses, you learn more and more about the atrocities committed by the Gods against the humans and jötunns, and you begin to hate them, as you ought to. The entire world is drenched in a feeling of sombreness, sadness and dread. Death is omnipresent. And the ones responsible for this decay are Odin and Thor, both of whom are a constant presence throughout the game, even when they're not seen, you feel like you're being watched. I'm in love with this depiction of the mythology, it's such a great contrast to the vanilla stuff you get from Marvel. This is an incredible game. I don't like rating things, but it was a perfect ten out of ten for me. Now I can't wait for the sequel. We're in for a treat with this franchise, I'm pretty sure. This was merely the prologue to something grand, something exceptional. Also, this song is a masterpiece: This game forever ruined Marvel's Thor for me, though.

So, God of War is a fucking masterpiece. I spend most of today trying to finish it, since I haven't had much time to play at all since it came out. Couldn't do it though, I still have a ways to go ... I keep getting lost in the world, the lore and the characters. This might be one of the most immersive gaming experiences I've ever had.
Even when I'm not progressing the story and just go around exploring, there seems to be an infinite pool of dialogue between Kratos and Atreus. They comment on creatures and landmarks that they encounter, they tell stories about the past and about the pantheon, they argue and even make jokes occassionally. It's a very believable father-son relationship.
I've always enjoyed the God of War games for what they were, and I'm not one of those people who say that Kratos is like the worst video game character ever because of just how unrelatable and over-the-top murderous he tends to be. Kratos back then was nothing more than a cartoon character. The entire GoW franchise up to this point has been an over-the-top cartoonish depiction of the decadence of the Greek pantheon, with no subtlety or depth whatsoever, but with a ton of gore and tits added in for good measure. Hard for the player to take any of it seriously, but neither did the games themselves, to be honest.
That's why it is so fascinating what they have decided to do with this game ... and surprising that it actually works so fucking well. This is not a reboot, it's a sequel, but Kratos is actually a real character now. He has depth and genuine conflict. The events of the previous games, as ridiculous as they often were, are acknowledged and presented as a dark chapter of Kratos' life, something that still haunts him to this day. And it works really well. There were moments in this game that sent fucking chills down my spine, especially when they were referencing stuff from the previous games, or showing Kratos deal with his past. Who would've thunk that I'd ever be so emotionally invested in a God of War game.
The gameplay is amazing as well, and the graphics and soundtrack are phenomenal top-tier stuff. For me, it's between God of War and Bloodborne for the best PS4 exclusive title, and I haven't even finished God of War yet. This is a system seller though, if you own a PS4, play this game.

I tried to watch that Trump interview, but I couldn't make it through the whole thing ... it's too cringy. Also, the fact that he calls his critics "haters" is fucking hysterical. He's the president of the United States, he's not a twelve year YouTube vlogger. What a joke.

Finally got a chance to play FFXV, and I have to say, despite having little to no idea what's going on with the story at the moment, this game is beautiful. The music is fantastic. Maybe just because it's Final Fantasy, but I love it! I have a somewhat complicated relationship to FFXV. The story is such a weird, incoherent mess, something must have gone severely wrong during development. The game never bothers to explain key elements of its plot, so most of the time, you have no idea what the hell is actually going on. If you like the characters and the battle system, you'll probably have a good time anyway ... but yeah, the story unfortunately never gets much better. The soundtrack is really fantastic though, probably my favourite part of the game, to be honest. The music was composed by Yoko Shimomura, who also composed all the Kingdom Hearts soundtracks, which are equally brilliant.

I started playing the new God of War. I'm about three hours in and I'm really enjoying it so far. The battle system seems very simplistic right now, but I'm sure it'll become more involved once you start to unlock new skills and are faced with harder enemies. The game already has some of the best writing I've seen in gaming in recent years, it already managed to made me misty eyed a few times ... which is not exactly what I expected from a God of War game, to be honest. I feel like this game will especially appeal to boys with father issues (not that I'd know anything about that ). Kratos is a sexy fucking beast of a man and I love it ... his arms are bigger than my entire body.
