Not that I dont enjoy seeing this one trashed but holy hell are these reviews idiotic. They mention how bad the vilain and Isaac's performance are but defend him with "oooh dont hide such an actor under the make up". Cant Isaac read? Did he not see what the role is? So if he sucks that is probably on him too. Another thing is CWar praise in almost each review. Not only do I have to manuever to avoid actual CW reviews now there are CW reviews in other movies' reviews Nope. Not paying for either of these overstuffed cash grabs. To be honest the trailers for this one did not look good (and I like the X-Men) and Issac, the little I saw of him, seems very miscast as the villain. If you are going to hide him under all that makeup/CGI stuff then you need an actor with a good, compelling voice who can come across as someone to fear. Oscar Issac ain't it. Compare that to Idris Elba as Krall in the new Star Trek movie, good actor hid entirely under make up but is physically imposing and can carry his voice in such a way that he's a believable threat. I'll probably see this one like I see most movies these days: on DVD.

I've seen quite a lot of positive reviews by people and critics whose opinion I value. A lot of them specifically praised Sophie, too.

Apocalypse is a good movie, y'all. Don't listen to the critics. It's not quite on the same level as First Class and Days Of Future Past, but that really doesn't make the movie bad. It is mind-boggling how the MCU always gets a pass even when they deliver utter shit like Age of Ultron or Iron-Man 2 and 3, but this gets hated by critics. And I'm saying this as someone who enjoyed the shit out of Civil War. Apocalypse has great acting (McAvoy! Runner-up: Sophie!) and you know, actual emotional moments. Some of the criticism was completely unjustified, e.g. I read everywhere that they gave Jennifer Lawrence the main role even though the story didn't warrant that. Her role is relatively big, it's true, but it's McAvoy and Sophie that are front and center, not Jennifer Lawrence. I have no idea how one could watch this movie and come out of it with a different idea. Even Michael Fassbender's role is bigger than Lawrence's. I think the main point of criticism for me is that they didn't really add anything new to the formula. It's a bit "been there, done that". But on the other hand: don't fix it if it ain't broke. Another negative point is that the movie was not able to connect the story to real life history as brilliantly as the other previous movies did. It is set in the 80s but it often doesn't really feel like that. But every time I thought "meh, this could be a bit better", they delivered an amazing scene like the new Quicksilver one ( ). The youngsters are definitely the highlight of the movie, especially Scott/Cyclops and Jean Grey. It's an 8/10 from me.

Glad to hear you liked it.
I've seen every single X-Men film in the theatre, and I'll be seeing this one as well. Critics be dammed. Between you and Stuckman I'm much more hopeful than I was.
*Also, I completely agree about the MCU often getting a pass. The only films I think they really nailed are Iron Man, Avengers, Winter Soldier, GotG, and Civil War. The rest are between mediocre to bad.

I can honestly say that Apocalypse is better than all MCU movies except maybe the ones you've mentioned. But then again, I find them hard to compare, because MCU movies often feel like comedies, whereas the X-Men movies have emotional depth and a moral to tell.

Finally saw it. I think the movies is ok, not bad, but not the best comic book movie, or even the best X-Men movie. - Sophie was very good, although sometimes I could actually see the british accent trying to get out. - Oscar Isaac is an amazing actor, but he was miscast as Apocalypse. Apocalypse is supposed to be imposing and over the top, Oscar was too subdued. - The Quicksilver sequence wasn't that great. They took a scene that worked perfectly in DOFP, and tried to make it bigger and "better" and they ended up with a sequence that we have already seen and goes on for too long. Plus the music didn't really fit. - The wolverine sequence also went on for too long. It would have been better if we only saw a shot of the claws and then soldiers going down like flies, like they did while he killed the people in the green cell where they locked up Hank and the others. - I loathe this Mystique. Mystique doesn't work as a hero, she works as a villain with complex emotions and motivations you can kind of relate to. And JLaw just doesn't care about playing the part anymore. - Nightcrawler was delightful, best part of the movie hands down. - I'm getting a bit tired of Magneto. Future movies might benefit from taking him out. - The Phoenix scene was fucking great. - Looking forward to things getting more "sinister". Also can't deny this:

X-Men 2 is still the best one for me, followed by DOFP.
One thing I forgot to mention: I actually wanted Apocalypse to kill Mystique. I was rooting for him during that scene. That's how much I dislike this version of the character and JLaw's performance. I'm sure the studio wants her back for future movies, but she just looks miserable all the time, and the more miserable JLaw looks in this movies, the more screen time her Mystique gets. Do you guys remember Rebecca Romain's Mystique? I miss her so much...

FINALLY saw it, despite it coming out nearly three weeks ago That wait made it feel less like an obligation for me. I usually go see the Marvel films the week they come out, but never really because I want to (with a few exceptions like Civil War) more like I need to. I didn't feel like that with this. I wanted to see it, and I enjoyed it. It's not perfect, it's not the best, but it's still pretty damn good. As with the other X-Men films this felt a bit crowded, a few characters get sidelined like Angel and Psylocke, but the rest of the characters were good. Loved the new team and I'm really looking forward to the next one. Some of the Mustique "criticism" I can understand (I'm not entirely sold on the idea of her as a hero) but I still enjoyed the rest of the characters, especially Magneto Apocalypse wasn't the best, but I enjoyed him as a villain more than 90% of the MCU villains. Also Jean Grey It's been ages since I've seen the older films, but anyway, best to worst, IMO: DoFP > X2 > First Class > Apocalypse > X-Men >>>>>>> Last Stand (Still not seen the two Wolverine movies out of lack of interest)

Watched it, and I was lucky enough to catch a screening in English, so I didn't have to suffer through the German dubbing. Overall, I liked it. I mean, it wasn't great, but it wasn't bad either, I'd certainly rank it above The Last Stand and the two Wolverine Origins movies. The character moments between Magneto and his family, Magneto and Professor X, Jean and Cyclops, were all great, but the overarching story was pretty meh, imo and so was the villain. I love Oscar Isaac, but Apocalypse was a pretty dull and forgetable comic book villain. Apart from the Phoenix stuff, the climax was a bit underwhelming. I lol'd pretty hard at Magneto shedding a single tear. Evan Peters was fucking phenomenal, and I really liked the guy who played Cyclops. Jean Grey is my favourite Marvel character, and Sophie was marvelous. The Phoenix stuff in the end was so cool, although I would have prefered the Phoenix being a cosmic entity like in the comics, that just happens to connect with Marvel Girl because of her sacrifice. I'm okay with them doing it differently in the movies, as long as it's like ... good. I've heard that they're planning to do the Dark Phoenix stuff next, and I'm super excited for that, and I pray to the old gods and new they don't screw up again. The Phoenix is literally the most powerful entity in the Marvel universe, she destroys an entire fucking solar system in the comics, you can't degrade her to just a side character and make the main plot revolve around something else entirely, like The Last Stand did. She needs to be in the center.

His story was boring and he was hyped up to be WAY more powerful than he was. I get that he's clearly powerful since only Phoenix could take him down, but his go-to move was to put people inside walls. He should have been able to do so many more cool things. And Oscar Isaac's acting abilities were way underused. Most of the Marvel villains are far better than Apocalypse was IMO.

I'm not saying he was the best villain in the history of comic book adaptations, but at least he was front and center and had a fantastic intro IMO. "Most of the Marvel villains are far better than Apocalypse"? What? I can't even remember most of them, because they were completely forgettable and the ones I can remember were godawful, e.g. Ultron. The only MCU villain that was better than Apocalypse was Loki IMO.
