He's written several chapters worth of words lol. I agree with you though. I don't like to 5hink it but I wish he would have saved those words for the book.

I have a look now and then at his blog. Not regular.
I think it's understandable that we are kinda "disappointed". But George is a very busy man I think. He's working on "Wild Cards", he's working on other projects.
For me, I'm waiting. Patiently. Because I can take my time reading other books (non-fiction and fiction alike). I may need a re-read of ASoIaF before I start TWoW once it'll be published. I won't mind that.
My prediction? End 2015 to early 2016 as publication date.

I think the frustrating part for me is reading other series where the author actually gets the next book out in a decent amount of time.

GRRM is not really consistent. He publishes the book whenever he wants to. By the looks of it, he isn't even fully concentrating on this project.

Good thing we are not waiting for Tolkien, but oddly enough, I wouldn't wait for him. I have ZERO interest in his books or those movies. Hurry up George.

I've accepted that we're getting the ending through the show no matter what happens but I would still like to read most of the TWOW material before I see it. I think GRRM wants it that way too so hopefully we get TWOW by Season 6. March-April 2016. A bit optimistic but if he gets on a roll it's possible.
But if not and we see it through the show first then that's that. I just hope once GoT is over he still wants to write it with the same enthusiasm as 1-5.

He has probably written 20+ pages worth of content on his blog about his issues with the Hugos or whatever. I feel shameful about it, but I'd wish he would just devote that type of energy into finishing his epic story. Eh, I don't see a problem with this. He's allowed a life outside of his books, and it's clearly something he feels strongly about, as many other SFF authors and fans do. I don't really have an issue with him writing these things. It's not as though he would be writing non-stop all day on Winds anyway. That isn't how writing a book works. I'd much rather he writes when he feels like it, as opposed to forcing it. Otherwise we are likely to get something sub-standard when Winds of Winter is finally released. Besides, I would be a dreadful hypocrite if I complained. I spend far too much time online and doing other pointless shit instead of doing work that actually needs doing... FWIW, I do think that he is not more motivated than he has been previously to finish the book. That doesn't mean he's going to be writing 24/7, but he certainly seems to have the drive to try and get it done now. And, whoever sent him a PM, you just wasted your own time As for A Dream of Spring, he mentioned in an interview that he learned his lesson with Winds; he should have started writing it immediately after A Dance with Dragons, rather than taking a 6 month break, because it made him drop the ball, so to speak. He is unlikely to make that mistake again, imo.

I hope when he does drop WoW he does very little press for it so he can jump right on DoS.

He said in a recent interview he regrets the six month break he took after Dance was published. He knows that if he stops, he is going to lose the flow. www.ew.com/article/2015/04/03/george-rr-martin-winds-date"Looking back, Martin says his one regret is not plowing ahead into Winds after finishing 2011’s A Dance with Dragons. “I was red hot on the book and I put it aside for six months” he says. “I was so into it. I was pushing so hard that I was writing very well. I should have just gone on from there, because I was so into it and it was moving so fast then. But I didn’t because I had to switch gears into the editing phase and then the book tour. The iron does cool off, for me especially.” "

Breaks are not needed!

I was hoping for the end of 2015 but since we're already 1/3 of the way through, I don't think we can hope for anything before Spring of 2016, at the earliest. He's gone to such lengths to create such a genius, intricate world in ASOIAF that I can't see him rushing the process to force an ending, but I don't think he wants to abandon his fans, either. I'm afraid that both he and we are pretty sure HBO @ 7 seasons will end before he publishes ADOS - a real shame. Maybe if HBO opts for 8 seasons? After all, that's three whole seasons from now.

Martin won't quit rambling about Hugo awards. I think he lost motivation. No, I think it's just because it's such a bi thing in the SF/F community right now, and something he feels very passionately about. I can hardly complain anyway, given the amount of time I spend doing pointless stuff online. It's not like he would spend 24 hours a day writing in any case

Just kind of assuming, he's not writing Winds when he's pyscho about something else.

I wouldn't worry too much about the novella he has recently written about the Hugo awards. Sure, it can be frustrating to see him devote so much time to shit like that, but at the end of the day, writing is his job. I don't do my job 24/7 and few people really do. He needs some personal time to relax, chill out and get his head in the right place so he can actually sit down and write productively. The fact that he's spent so much time writing on his blog has just meant he hasn't spent his off-time (i.e. time he isn't writing) doing something else like, idk, watch TV or something. I doubt very much it will have eaten into his writing time.

It's going to be Spring 2016! Keep the faith! I think that's actually a reasonable expectation. He has cancelled some appearances in order to focus on finishing the book. He has also decided once again not to write an episode for the series, I think he's motivated to at least get TWOW out around the same time as they are gearing up for season 6. As for his blog, he can do whatever he wants, he surely needs time to decompress and relax. Writing can be very engrossing, and I'm sure there are many a days he'll write for hours non-stop but sometimes he needs to do other things to relax his mind. I'm not going to begrudge people how they spend their time.
