There are quite a few film polls , the AFI has a famous one, others. My favorite of all times is the British Film Institute Sight and Sound one. It has been going since 1952 , it taken every 10 years , and has, to me, the best group of film critics and film historians voting. Here: Sight and Sound PollObservations: Citizen Kane ruled this list for 60 years as number one. Hitchcock was not in the top ten and now is number one with Vertigo (1958). I would say that film needs to be in the top ten for sure, but Citizen Kane is still number one in my book. Interesting , 2001 A Space Odyssey, has jumped every year since 1972 and landed in the top ten in 2002 , it is now number 6. There is one film that, for what reason, not, god-knows-why, should be in the top ten, or at least in the top twenty, that is Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali (1955). Actually more of Ray's films should be in the top 100. This film is about 4 or 5 in my book. It is one of the most lyrical movies I know and work of genius. Two of my favorite film directors are Akira Kurosawa and Satyajit Ray, they are ranked too low on this poll. I like Rashomon (1950) better than Seven Samurai (1954) tho both are remarkably beautiful films.

I love films although I wouldn't consider myself a movie buff by any measure. I would have to agree with you that Kurosawa is racked way to low, Ozu Yasujirô is racked twice ahead of him and other the Tokyo story I saw them as pretty equal, but once again I'm not a biff. Also, I thought it was interesting that The Godfather Part I is racked hire than the Godfathers Part II.

Kurosawa made half a dozen films in the 1950s worthy of any top 100 list. There are too many Jean-Luc Godard films ranked ahead of better entries. This is the best poll I know of, the 2002 Sight and Sound poll is probably the best. There is not a clunker in the whole list. Something weird going on with Terrence Malick in that list , Badlands and Days of Heaven are his master pieces. Malick is one of the most eccentric film makers of all time. Singing in the Rain is a good musical film, but I have always rated it 2nd behind West Side Story which is not even listed.
