Show to book, book to show. Who’s dead? Who will be dead? And, what the hell!
(Not counting invented characters like Myranda.)
Stannis Baratheon:
Book: Alive Show : Dead? Spoiler?: Seems to be.
Biggest surprise, this is a major arc in the book carrying a lot of dramatic narrative. We know Stannis is alive, at least in the first part of Winds of Winter. The conflict with the Boltons just ends in a whimper? Of course Stannis and his forces could just freeze to death ( a droll ending I would not put past George). Story I expected was Stannis takes Winterfell, things drift there for a while, the Others breach the wall and he has to take up arms against them. This somewhere near the end of Winds. Stannis loses his life in this (these) battle(s)?
Mance Rayder
Book: Alive Show : Dead. Spoiler?: Seems to be.
Seems reasonable that Mance won’t survive the adventure at Winterfell. Except serving as enabler of the rescue at Winterfell, I never could figure out Mance’s story purpose at this point. Unless he was supposed to help Jon with the Wildlings?
Ser Barristan Selmy
Book: Alive Show : Dead? Spoiler?: Seems to be.
From Dance and Winds GRRM has Selmy leading the troops against the coalition siege at Meereen. That he could be killed in a big battle, yeah I can believe that. He could survive the battle and die later in Winds, I can see that too. Why he didn’t have his finest hour in episode 9 … I don’t know.
Shireen Baratheon
Book: Alive Show : Dead. Spoiler: Seems to be
As has been pointed out not exactly a sympathetic character in the books, tho not unlikeable either. The logistics of this are weird. Book wise this happens when? Shireen is back at CB, with her mother. Melisandre does her sacrifice there at CB without Stannis around? Why not be save Shireen for a big battle in the south , or a battle against The Others which Mel is so hep up about?
Selyse Baratheon
Book: Alive Show : Dead. Spoiler: Seems to be
This one seems reasonable. Book wise when? As on the show? Probably.
Myrcella Baratheon
Book: Alive Show : Dead. Spoiler: Seems to be
I am not sure why they needed Nell Tiger Free? For such a small amount of screen time could have used Aimee Richardson! Where this happens in Winds , if it happens, I can’t tell. What does it mean about Dorne and the throne’s relationship?
Maester Aemon
Book: Dead Show : Dead. Spoiler: No
The only adaptation that was not a surprise.
Ser Jorah Mormont
Book: Alive Show : Alive Spoiler: What the hell?
I include this because Jorah may be ‘dead man walking’. In the books there is every likelihood that Jorah might get killed at the Battle of Meereen. This is a weird story deviation. Prose wise I could see keeping Ser Barry in the narrative longer than Jorah.
Jon Snow
Book: Dead?(staying dead?) Show : Dead ?(or what?) Spoiler: What the hell?
This is an old old topic. As I have said who cares a tinker’s damn for the story at the Wall if there is only secondary characters there? What GRRM has planned for this really make me curious to see Winds!
